Big Log - Small Chainsaw Mill

- This past summer, a neighbor took down a large number of trees on their property. I was able to salvage some of them, one of which was a huge white oak that I managed to mill with my smaller Alaskan mill.
Apologies for the loudness of the music relative to the voiceover. I'll check the levels better next time.

One of the best videos in the youtube wasteland! Love it!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
Hello from imgur. that is some lovely wood.
Thank you both!
Super Cool video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Awesome...
Thank you!
Very cool! I just milled a little log for the first time. and now I'm happy to see it is possible to mill BIG logs like I initially wanted to with my small chainsaw.
I’m glad it was helpful!
I love watching ingenuity in action. I think you made some woodturners cry with this video.
Also: A face made for radio and a voice made for mime.
Thank you! As for woodturners, I am one myself, and saved a few of the protuberances to turn. 👍
It's great to be able to cut things down and then put them right to use! Very nice!
Thanks! It amazes me the grain that is hiding inside neighborhood trees!
That gantry on wheels is so cool
Thanks! It comes in handy!
Thanks for sharing. Kill that music blasting when no narration going on. Great speed on getting the the final result!
Thanks! Yes, I messed up with the audio levels. Whoops!
Awesome video Doc, hard work, persistence, and a little log scrounging paid off nicely! #TeamLogOX
Thank you! The Forestry tool is indispensable!
Holy shit... You spent a lot of money to be able to do that and personally, I don't get it, but I do admire your tenacity, creativity and ingenuity.
Thanks! It does take a certain kind of crazy to get in to this stuff. 😂
That was a hell of an effort, congrats.
Thank you!
Don't mix audio levels so much, your music is loud, your voice is low, makes it hard to listen because I want to turn up the volume when you speak but almost mute when the music hits because it's suddenly way too loud.
Agreed - I didn’t do a good job on that account.
Beauty beams! Would love to have some white oak as structure in my place
Yeah, they have turned out nice!
Thank you!
Here from Imgur! I apologise in advance if you have this information posted elsewhere, I had a 120 year old +80 foot fur tree fall down on me last year and I've been thinking of getting a chainsaw mill myself... What brand are you using?
I am using an Alaskan Mill Mark IV from Granberg and a Stihl 311 with a 24” bar and ripping chain (critical to use a ripping chain rather than a crosscut). When mounted in the mill, this gives a little over 18” of cut width. Anything wider would need a bigger saw.
Awesome! I have the same Stihl, what chain did you use? Thanks
Thanks! I use a ripping chain from Bailey’s. Very easy to sharpen with the Granberg grinder.
How long did you wait for the beams to dry?
Probably not long enough, only a couple of months. Certainly I did not adhere to the “year per inch of thickness”rule. If they move too much, I’ll figure out a way to fix it.
What is the price of one of those if you were to buy it? Was it really worth all the work?
The log? Hard to say. Once the wood is dry, probably a decent amount.
@@TheGrainDoctor well you ended up with 6x6 beams. What does that usually cost?
Ok so home depot has 6"x6"x12' beams for $34 (pressure treated) and if you got 6 of them out of that you're saving a little over $300 I guess. Looks fun but I couldn't afford that kind of a hobby.
9 of them*
Andrew Grady Home center pressure treated SPF is not equal to white oak in terms of market value. But to your point, this is not, and was not intended to be a cost or time effective way of getting lumber. But I do enjoy it, it saved a tree from ending up in a landfill, and some people enjoyed the video (despite my poorly set audio levels on the background music). So yes, it was worth the work for me. Might it be worth it for you? Maybe not. Different strokes.
