I just unloaded a bunch of Fuji stuff I was experimenting with the last few years and now an OM-1 is on the way to take over for my E-M1.2. I fell for the hype and went searching for solutions to problems I never actually had. Olympus never let me down and I wasted a lot of time and money to discover I was happy all along.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY : -) THANKS FOR ENTERING OUR WORLD! OM-1 together with 150-400mm/4.5 Pro is a real game changer for me. Perfect wildlife photography combination. I still can't believe, how many keepers I got almost all the time even with fast moving animals. And up to 20'000 ISO is no problem when using Denoise apps
Thanks you for sharing that, Peter! I'm a long time follower of your awesome channel, and what strikes me is that you have maintained an unbiased opinion when it comes to your equipment, although you are an ambassador. Thanks for summarizing your experiences in such a great way!
I shot a canon D60 6mplk 2nd hand rig as a teen. Hauled it all over Europe and then switched to the Lx5 compact after it broke me! Coming back to interchangeable lens 10 years later with two small kids, i just got the em10 mkiv. The size and weight is key...kids have a lot of stuff and Dad has to carry it. People also often forget that regardless of the body size the glass gets heavy on bigger sensors. While i might consider Apsc as the kids grow the IBIS is staggering.....its a game changer. Hard to go back.
An improvement I’d love is for the general non subject tracking to improve. Adding human tracking would also be nice. Tracking a person playing sports without seeing their face would be nice.
Thanks for your 1 year experience sharing Peter. I do have the OM-1 since 2 months now and it's a nice little step forward for me. I'm realizing when using my EM5MII that OM system stopped bringing new features into existing cameras, new FW is about bug fixing or new lens support. Getting real updates for existing cameras were always an argument for me going to olympus. Best feature of the new OM-1 to me is subject tracking. Missing feature though is people subject tracking and the increased size of the body. Getting bigger and bigger those cameras.
I agree that bringing new features to older cameras has been a good thing. I hope OMDS will continue doing this. Face and Eye detect is there, but you have to set it up like with older cameras. I know... it could be in the same place as subject tracking.
I mainly do Storm photography along with Pet, wildlife, landscape and Architectural. OM-1 is my main camera and my backup is OMD Em5 MII. Love them both. Love your channel Peter!
Yes, Santa was very good to me this past Christmas and I received the OM1! I have been very impressed with it but am still learning all of it’s features, it is a jump up from my EM5 MIII. Missing out on your 52 assignments because of my learning curve and have also upgraded my editing software to full Lightroom/Photoshop on top of it. Nothing like learnings a lot of new stuff all at once. 🤣
After much deliberation I switched after many years with Canon from Canon 5Diii to Olympus EM-1iii a couple of years ago, mainly for a lighter system. I was very happy overall with the EM-1iii but there were definitely a few downsides, such as less-than perfect electronic viewfinder, slightly inferior resolution and dynamic range, and slower switch-on time. All of that was addressed very effectively by the OM-1, so I've been very happy with it, and I don't miss my FF 5Diii at all now. And I love all the clever features like subject recognition, Hi-res, Pro Capture, focus stacking, etc. My main thing is bird photography and it's brilliant for that, but I'm very happy using it for all sorts of photography, such as landscapes and travel photography or catching the dog running on the beach. I've also had a lot of fun with the tiny 60mm f2.8 macro lens.
Considering the long history of making video camera products by Sony and Panasonic, I think it is hard for other players to catch up in a short time. In fact, if Panasonic announces a G9 mark II with phase detect AF, it may easily become the best hybrid M43 camera.
I still use my EM1 mk1 for my professional work and an EM10 mk3s for my personal projects. Both still excellent cameras, and, despite temptation, I've not found any need to update. Yes, I'd LOVE an OM1, but I 'officially' retired four years ago, so I can't really justify the outlay for the amount of work I now do.
You really should consider the E-M1X. I shot professionally with The E-M1 mk1's ( I still have one body) and also with the E-M1 Mkll. A little over a year ago I bought a refurb E-M1X from Olympus and would not trade it. It is hard to explain until you've used it -- especially in a 'pro' type shooting situation -- like a portrait session or event. Every thing works so well, and the buttons and dial have a 'buttery', but positive feel. It's hands down the best camera I've ever used. The OM-1 is better for tracking wildlife, birds etc., but the M1X is just very solid and has better user interface.
Great camera, now being offered with a € 200 cashback. I love the handheld hi-res mode, but would like to see motion correction, as implemented by Panasonic. Should be possible with a firmware upgrade. I also like the high resolution EVF, which is great for checking details in the image. And the improved menu system.
A very good introduction about OM-1, which I have on my "wish list". So far, I am using OM-D E-M1 as my regular camera, and OM-D 10 Mark III, to video filming with Gimbal Crane M2, with external monitor, works just well, and as an "easy to use", for for partys and similar occasions. My Canon and equipment, still lies in the wardrobe, since some years now. Your review, is very intuitive and from now on, I should have my eyes open, so I can purchase one. I have been in Helsinki, I sang in the Church build in the mountain, wow! what. a feeling. I love Finland,in many ways and I also sing some songs on your language, "Miljoona Rossua", "Koko koko kaukana Koko" ;-). Still living in Sweden, but 2015 we should move to Åland, but other things occur. I enjoy your videos, and you knowledge and humble charisma, but I missed some pictures in the end ;-) The review was superb! Thanks a lot!
Thanks, Peter. I have been using the OM-1 intensively for one year now, 100000+ photos taken, most of them bird and wildlife. I am very happy with the camera; the IQ, performance, feature set, robustness, robustness, battery life are all great. I have one major complaint though: the dials are 'sticky'. In particular, the front dial is hard to rotate with precision. When your fingers get cold or wet it's close to impossible. I much preferred the ergonomics of the E-M1 series / E-M1X. Then my second minor complaint is the placement of the menu button. Why move it to the left part of the body?
Would be nice if they did a bayerless sensor camera version too for low light mono imaging (astro stuff mainly). It seems only Leica take it seriously but they are way too expensive. Bayer removal is too tricky I tried removing it on a Canon 40D I nearly got there! will try again with another old camera.
I'm a hobby photographer, and I really haven't explored all of the OM-1 in the 6 months I've had it. But off the top of my head, a few places OM could have done better: 1) Move the menu button back to the right side. You really can't go into menu mode if you are using your left hand, either to hold the lens, or holding something else. 2) Integrate eye/head mode into subject tracking mode (i.e. have an explicit human mode). 3) In review mode, indicate whether bird/cat/etc. AI mode found the subject. It's in the EXIF information, but if you are in the field, it is hard to know if you are getting the subject locked in. In particular, when I'm ramping up, I want to know if I need to do something to improve getting the subject. 4) It would have been nice if the HLD-10 grip had the external power port that the HLD-6/7/8/9 grips had. Yes, it is nice that that the OM-1 now supports USB C-PD to power the camera and charge the batteries, but USB C-PD doesn't work if the batteries are completely drained (or missing). While I don't use tethering, USB C-PD doesn't work if you are tethering because the USB socket is in use connecting the camera to the computer. Also the USB socket can block the articulating rear monitor, while the power port position on the right side doesn't block the monitor. It would be even nicer if that power port was on the body itself and not on the grip like the E-m1x. 5) It would be nice if the focus indicator square color could be adjustable. If you are photographing a mostly green subject, it is hard to see the focus indicator. Also, I wear special migraine glasses that reduce some of the bands of light that studies have shown increases migraines (mostly blue light and florescent lights), and I find the green square at times hard to see. 6) One problem that the OM-1 introduces is it now has many more focus points than previous cameras. If you use single point auto focus (like I prefer to do), the green square is so tiny that it can be hard to see. If in addition to changing the color of the square, we could adjust the size, it would make it easier to see. 7) At times, I really wish I had the old tilt screen from the E-m1 mark I and E-m5 mark I cameras. For shooting with the camera overhead to be above the crowd, it is better to have a tilt screen, rather than a screen that you have to fold out and then adjust. In theory, the GH-6 solved this issue by having the screen both tilt and articulate. Also with the USB, HDMI, microphone, headset cables, it can restrict the articulation of the screen. 8) Use a more contrasting paint to indicate where the ports are. I don't do much video, and I was doing a video setup in a darkened room with only my cell phone light to aid in the setup. I could not tell which port was which, and I plugged the microphone into the headset jack. Fortunately the camera's internal microphone worked well enough. 9) I would have preferred if the shutter release port was on the left side with the other cables, but this is minor. 10) Provide a full size HDMI port instead of a micro HDMI port. 11) The CP-2 is kind of a joke, since many of the USB and micro HDMI cables I have won't fit into it, particularly if I have angled USB/HDMI cables. 12) The CC-1 is ok if you have thick enough cables, but not all cables will fit well enough to protect from being yanked out. Also, if you are fully rigged up, you could have 5 cables that you want to protect from being yanked out (USB, HDMI, microphone, headset, shutter release). 13) I'm not at that level, but I imagine people doing lots of 4K video would like the camera to support output to SSDs like some of the competition has. 14) Every so often when I use OIShare in remote control mode, I'm reminded that I don't have access to the full settings. Only a few basic setting can be set with OIShare. 15) Talking about OIShare, it would be nice if there were some newer electronic zoom lenses that you can control the zoom from the remote app (such as a 12-100mm variant). At the moment, you only have 4 aging, slow EZ/PZ lenses that you can zoom from withing OIShare. An alternative, would be to have OIShare add support for wifi pan/tilt heads and for wifi follow-focus controls (for both zoom and focus). 16) It would be nice if the super control panel had a spot to get you to the user menu feature. 17) In general, it would be nice if the OM programmers used the touch screen more for things like menu, etc. like Panasonic does. 18) Speaking of Panasonic and touch screen, as I recall, my Panasonic G85 has several virtual buttons that you can program like real buttons. 19) In the super control panel for the AF-mode, it would be really handy if in addition to S-AF, C-AF, etc. that they had S-AF+MF, C-AF+MF, etc. options rather than forcing you do menu diving to switch between enabling the focus ring when in AF mode. I recall the older Olympus cameras had this as an option. 20) One thing that I really wish the camera had was one or more special modes. It would be like P mode, but you could control each of the variables (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) and the order it goes between them. Sometimes you might want to set the camera so that the shutter speed is between 1/1000 and 1/5000, the aperture to be between f/4 and f/5.6 and the ISO to range from 200 to 6400. You might want to vary the shutter speed first, then the ISO, and finally the aperture. Other times you might want to vary the aperture first, then the shutter speed, and finally the ISO. That way when you are doing events, and you move between different lighting, you don't have to change the settings.
@@ForsgardPeter Just to be clear, the OM-1 is my favorite camera of the cameras I currently use, and within the top 5 of digital cameras I've used since 2002 (Olympus C-2100UZ, Olympus E-1, Olympus E-5, Olympus E-m1 mark I, and now OM-1, with the E-m5 mark III being in 6th place). But like any gear, it could always be improved upon.
Excellent video, Peter. It's interesting that you mentioned the value of being able to crop portrait and landscape from the same video files. I just photographed a "special needs" event that required me to produce Jpeg still image files for upload at the end of the evening. Most of the photography was indoor, low light that would require flash lighting. Since I knew I would be shooting both portrait and landscape orientation images, and since I wanted consistent lighting using a bounce reflector with on-camera flash, I simply set my E-M1X up so that all I had to do to switch from horizontal orientation to vertical orientation was to press the AEL/AFL Button. It worked like a charm! I shot the entire event with my E-M1X in landscape orientation, with consistent flash lighting, and ended up with beautiful looking portrait and landscape orientation files. Even though the vertical orientation files are smaller than the horizontal files, there is no discernible quality difference at any reasonable viewing/print size. There was another photographer there with two huge Nikon D4's with big lenses hanging on him -- I shot the entire event with my E-M1X and 12-100mm lens. I don't have the OM-1 yet, but it is on the radar screen for sure.
Great vid, 2 things I'd like to see added is 1: night mode on the rear display ie red lighting, I think the Panasonic has this, and 2: the view finder display would be nice if the info rotated when shooting in portrait mode, I think Fuji does this with the XT series. Other than that, It's the perfect system for my needs.
I bought mine on a pre-order last year as well. I liked it so much I bought a second one a couple months ago. I still use my Nikon D850 occasionally, but not near as much as I used to! I've had all of the M1's and three of the M5's. But I think the OM-1 is better than the others. I like the new menu system too. I never really got used to the old one.
Hi Peter! I just love my OM-1! Simply complete and robust! Able to shine in all photographic disciplines, both professionally and for hobby! I wish the OM-5 had the same menu and USB-C to become the miniature partner for my travels. But it doesn't replace my OM-1 nor my em-1 iii, so I'm still waiting. Who knows, maybe we will be graced with a surprise, like an OM-3 (small like the OM-5, but with PRO grade performance and qualities)? A PenFii would also be awesome. I think OM System is going in a good way! Promising! Also Panasonic is giving new vigor to its Lumix / Leica line and consequently to the M43 system! In my opinion the M43 system is the future! I ordered the new 90mm Macro. I'm looking forward to starting using it. My list for OM System would be the aforementioned OM-3 and PenFii and the 75-300mm lens (new weather sealed version) and a 10mm f1.4. The already announced future lenses, I hope one of them will be something innovative. The system is in need of a fast PZ PRO lens. It would be awesome if it was compatible with TCs.
Thanks for sharing. I totally agree about the menu system in OM-5 could have been the new one. Micro-USB I can live with. Did see the news about 90mm delivery? The demand is so high that OMDS has hard time to keep up with the demand.
@@ForsgardPeter oh… sad! I did put my order almost immediately after the launch, and I used a voucher from a trade in (I traded my em5iii). I hope I could receive my unit soon. I saw the new OM shop website. It looks great. But the 150-400mm f4.5 PRO is not listed anymore.
@@ForsgardPeter Peter, is the OM System Hotline, for Advanced and Elite Service, working in Finland? Because the telephone hotline is not working in Germany! Very annoying, because we payed for this service. Do you know something about that? Any news?
One feature i would love is the menu system. I want it to be handled by our fingers. Buttons are slower, and you know how good handling of a smart phone is using screen instead of buttons. And that change i want in all OM System cameras.
Thanks for the video, Peter. If we want to attract more video users with OM-1, I think OMDS should work closely with gimbal companies like DJI. Last officially supported camera for gimbals is E-M1 Mark II and I think OM-1 deserves more support on that area.. Currently it is possible to use a DJI gimbal with OM-1 via 2.5mm cable, OM-1's 2.5mm slot and start 4K video. But it would be great if it was possible to control camera settings from gimbal using USB-C -> USB-C cable (it is possible on E-M1 Mark II and E-M1 Mark III with DJI Gimbals)
Yes! Big gripe for me. I use a gimbal but can't access all of the features on it like you mentioned. DJI or the FeyunTech Pro I have really been liking. They definitely need to focus on more video support.
I think this is a great retrospective. Thank you Peter. Along with your open gate comment I’d really like to see variable aspect ratio that took advantage of the whole chip everything from two to one horizontal through two to one vertical could easily be available and would include your open gate if you wanted to do framing post. I found myself wanting square video lately and have that built into the camera would be very helpful. Higher rate of speed two would be nice. 4K 240 frames per second needs to be a goal.
LiveND works quite well. It is not weak. On the contrary. One of the best features of OM SYSTEM cameras. Unfortunately, LiveND works only in photography.
For anyone struggling to find a suitable travel bag for the OM1 with a zoom travel lens, I can recommend the Think Tank Digital Holster 10 V2.0 Padded Camera Bag for DSLR or Mirrorless. It expands to take a long zoom but without expansion an OM1 plus 12-200 lens will fit perfectly. It also has pouches for SD cards and batteries plus you can hang it on your belt.
Just did the update, went fine... only that the Windows 10 PC crashed once the update was done and the update window wanted to close and bring OM Workspace back up on screen.
Thank u for your awesome videos . I just got the Om-1… I absolutely have spent hours and cannot get videos to record with sound … why would videos record w/o sound . I have changed absolutely everything i could relating to video - and still no sound . What am I missing?? Would a brand new OM-1 be defaulted to not have sound set up ?? I have tried everything…😢 Im beyond frustrated!! Can u offer any suggestions??? Thank you !!!
Owned the Om1 for less than month. Upgraded from the Panasonic G9 that I mainly used for wildlife/bird photography. My keeper rate using the G9 left me wanting more so using the Om1 with the PL 100-400mm my keeper rate has gone from keeping a few good sharp images to keeping excellent and more interesting sharp photos of birds in flight with the best possible wing position. Now I basically have to discard many many very good sharp images and just keep the best. Amazing! BTW I have not abandoned the G9 because it is still one heck of a camera for stills, landscapes etc. I just leave the stuff shooting to the Om1. So impressed with the Om1 that I have preordered the Olympus 150-400mm F4.5 pro lens with the TC 😮. That will break my bank but I want to take it to the next level with more reach, better F-stop performance for low light conditions and better IBIS with IS of Olympus lens. I’m expecting that image quality I will basically be the same but I know I will also love the short 1/4 and smoother turn of the zoom ring will be a game changer with a well placed TC lever. And like I said in a previous video, Om systems you keep on with software updates, making my Om1 better and better so I will never feel the need to upgrade again 😅
Peter any comments on compatability of new OM system camera bodies with OMD Zuiko m4/3 lenses made by olympus? I would assume the OM system cameras would be fully compatible with older Olympus micro 4/3 lenses?
I don't have aspirations to buy an OM1 , but as an enthusiastic leisure / amateur photographer i have very recently bought an OM5 which I find to be excellent .Once you feel that you have a comprehensive use of the OM5 it would be great if you could do a video on the above based on the OM5 .I hope this might appeal to you !!
I've been using the OM-1 for 10 months, and overall, I'm very happy with it. I'm also happy with the lens development. The biggest frustration... July 2022, I suddenly experienced that the "record" button (top, right hand side with a red dot) got *stuck*. I had used it to toggle HR handheld mode, and suddenly, it didn't work properly. Was it a heat expansion problem (42C)? Was it sweat from my hand that accumulated around the button and made it sticky? Was it accumulation of dust? This (and other?) buttons are occasionally still problematic. I've never had problems like this with previous OM cameras. Please improve button quality in next version! --- Wishes for improvements: 1. Further improvements in subject detection. Also: more types (sports/humans), and maybe automate switching between types? Should Face/Eye detection be categorized as subject detection in menu? 2. Switch to latest standard of fast SD cards. SD card standard supporting at least 900 MB/s is several years old.
Peter, hello! Express your opinion about the speed and stability of the work of the autofocus on OM-1 in s-af mode. Robin Wong released a video about problems with autofocus on OM-1. I compared the work of the autofocus Mark 3 and OM-1 at a low-contrast facility and I see that AF OM-1 is less stable.
I saw that video or those videos. I have spoken with Robin today. I have had no issues with S-AF on my daily work. I have not tested it like Robin did. The problem is when photographing in low light. Have not done that so much. I will do some test, of course as soon as I have time. It will be soon.
I like mine a lot as well. An incredible upgrade from the m1iii for wildlife. The only thing I would request is AI human/face detection, and better tracking performance. For the om-1ii, perhaps the sensor could be improved?
I upgraded from E-M1.2 to OM-1. And although I'm very happy overall, I still do not like the front dial wheel and the position thereof. When I put my finger around the grip, the top of my finger falls beyond the dial and I always have to retract my finger to touch it. And as it's no longer on top, but more hidden you need to really 'grip' it to turn the wheel. Especially with gloves very hard to operate. I expect a major update with firmware release 2.0😜
Hi Peter, I have learnt a lot about Olympus gear through your channel. Thank you. Given the OM-1’s fast focusing, I am wondering whether this is a good camera for street photography-as well as nature photography. Your thoughts? Best regards, Jay
The 20mm F1.4 Pro is a nice lens. I use it with OM-5. Also the 25mm F1.2 pro is an option. Panasonic has a 20mm pancake. It is an ok lens, but the AF is not the best.
I’d like a few more megapixels or a mode where you have less megapixels but they do a handled less iso raw mode? Sort of averaging images taken consecutively in camera, maybe mix this with the digital teleconverter?
Hey Peter you asked after the camera the visitors use... So here is mine: I'm using most my Canon M6 Mark II. It's lightweight, small and easy to use/take with. The sensor is good enough and I have all the M lenses (and others) for the system. Backup is the M50 II. For special I have the Canon RP fullframe. My main application in photography is landscape, nature, family and holiday. My Olympus equipment I don't use anymore. WHY? For me the Canons are more simplier in use: the menue is much more simple. And therefore it makes more fun for me.. So this is my personal decision - not a general. Everybody knows, every system has its own Pros & Cons. Last: my change from Olympus to Canon was a matter of "stomach decision". I don't wanted to invest further in a system/company which isn't really safe to exist for years... And the lack of real technical development - no real n e w sensor of Olympus for example - is obvious. OK, the M-system is limited in lenses and now history because of the new Canon APSC. But I bought all my M's in used condition (cameras and lenses) and the limitation in choice can be an advantage in concentration on the essential of photography. SIMPLICITY and SYMPATHY. Do I miss something at Canon? For sure. But you win others. At last: the core is named SYMPATHY. It now feels right - having more fun in handling.
Have a canon 90d, when i want the optical viewfinder and grip, otherwise fuji xt4. Dont really like the handling and button placement of sony, nikon not often used but would be also nice when you find their handling good (when i bought my first dslr, the iso button was left of the screen what i didnt like at all). Never had an micro 4/3 camera, but will try it someday.
Ibis, live ND, Live composite, m.zuiko lenses, high resolution handheld option, focus stacking feature made easy for dummies 😊, Olympus ”colours” which imo (and yes, I got calibrated eyes for that 😊😊) differ from e.g. Nikon hues…. These are some of the reasons why Olympus/OM system seems the best option for me atm
Oke, best features: my current cam, the EM1.2. The nicest cam to use: my GH4. I just got accustomed to it so easily and to this day (I bought em1.2 in dec 2016) I never got even close to that level with the Em1.2 I heard Om1 is better here. What features I would like in OM1 that aren't there: the Hires mode does not correct for movement anywhere close to G9 or Panasonic FF series. That is what is missing here. The videofeatures for me personally are not too important, but why not better features as long as it does not destabilise the cam. From what I heave heard the AF-C with tracking is well behind Sony A6600 etc. So if that is correct, it should really be fixed in fw. IQ? The more the merrier but personally I also used D800e from Nikon and while better I never thought IQ difference with my EM1.2 was that big. And Hires modes help to change all that where possible. Personally I would love to have a sensor that is like 30 MP by now as long as the noise etc stays the same (which is quite unrealistic, I know). But in the end I awaitng a Panasonic G9 upgrade since I never got acustomed to Olympus Menusystems but also not the onboard controls. I basically do not like them a lot.
Peter, do you know what sort of engineering resources OM-Systems have for developing the cameras they release? I've seen quite a few comments from OM-1 users that simple things that make such a difference to using the camera (positioning of the histogram, transparency etc) have not been implemented and the firmware updates that have come are really minor in overall scope, often aimed at stability rather than features.
My main use of the OM-1 is for bird photography. I swapped from Nikon D-500 and 200-500 Nikon lens, mainly for the weight and then because if the features on OM-1 for bird photography. My “method” when I’m out with the camera is just to walk around and capture birds when the opportunity arises. This makes the choice of lens a tricky one, I need reach most of the time, so started with the 100-400, I managed some good shots with this. I then tried the 300 f4, fantastic lens but limited due to just being a 300. I am now using the 40-150 2.8 Zuiko for the benefit of the extra light, another great lens, however, limited for reach, I have tried the 2x extender but find it much harder to get sharp shots. I don’t want to have to switch lens due to the fact that the opportunity to get a shot of a bird does not give you time to switch. Anyway, overall I am sticking with the OM-1, I might swap back to the 100-400 as this lens probably suits my way of photography more.
You might actually consider picking up a clean used copy of the Olympus 75-300mm. With the outstanding IBIS in the OM-1, that lens works surprisingly well hand held. It is a sharp lens too, it's just not fast at f/4.8-6.7, but with the ISO capabilities of the OM-1 it is a good match with very light size and weight.
I am lucky to own the 150-400 which is an expensive lens but when compared to Nikon and Canon well it is let’s say half the price. With the OM1 it is a stunning combination. I decide to buy the MC-20 to give me even more reach for birds that just don’t allow a close approach. I just returned from a morning’s photography and had a wallaby, small kangaroo for those that don’t know. This is wild situation so not a zoo and these guys are nervous with people stopping in cars so you don’t have time to put up a tripod you just try and frame and squeeze the trigger before they disappear. I could only hand hold with iso 1600 and the lens max’d out with full zoom ie 800mm plus inbuilt 1.25 converter and the 2 x extender. So we are looking at a lens that is 35mm equivalent 2000mm. What a nonsense to even try with the head of the animal full frame but let me tell the keepers were nearly 100% and I don’t like soft images. This to me is a fantastic system and for those that don’t know MFT well you haven’t a clue. Of course you will still say as one person on your blog that it is not a wildlife system. He probably has never even tried a MFT but still comments with negatives. I have used all the top market cameras and the expensive lenses and they are wonderful products but so is the OM1 and Olympus accessories.
I want improvements to the in-camera HDR function. It yields crappy results compared to the smartphones. Also it should provide the HDR file in Raw not just JPG.
@@ChrisCysterOne yes you can. iPhone 14 Pro combines a series of Raw files producing a single DNG file, similar to Lr HDR merge but much better result.
I have no OM-1. Why? Simple: Money! Other than that, it would be nice to have one. I might buy a used E-M5III (or OM-5) at some point, even though I would love to have the new sensor of the OM-1 … And as an amateur I use different cameras, the Chamonix F2 being my new "main" camera (replacing an Intrepid 4x5). For digital it is a Pen F digital and an E-M10II (a real "fun camera", and much better featured than it looks at first glance).
@@formermpc10 Not necessarily. I know quite well what the different models would offer, and which specific improvement/new feature I can appreciate. But yes, sometimes the older model is actually better - this is why I bought a used E-M10 Mk II instead of III or IV. The E-M5III has the 20 MP sensor compared to the E-M5II (16 MP, had one for a short period of time and wasn't satisfied for several reasons, then bought the Pen F I still have). E-M5III vs. OM-5 would rather be about opportunity than actual differences (chances are that firmware updates will be available for longer for the OM-5, but that's pure speculation). But for the time being I'll stick to what I do have, the one or other lens would have priority.
Hi, I agree completely with your wishes for opengate video, in camera anamorphic support, and a big wish I have is if om digital with their big lens knowledge would make a 25mm 2x anamorphic autofocus lens, it could really be useful and also make heads spin on non om digital users. All the best Sebastian
I have 2 cameras… my phone, and Panasonic G80. I kind of wish I could get an OM1 for the bird detect AF and the handheld focus stacking feature. I do lots of different types of photography for fun, it’s just making life easier at the extremes (eg shooting birds super telephoto, or shooting macro) that would be nice. I can’t afford an OM1 though and if I could I would prefer to spend the money on a lens though so I don’t think I will get a new camera for a long time…
Great Video. I love my OM1 but want an OM1X. If they would have not done so a horrible HLD10 we might not need an X as the OM1 itself is quite goooood. On the body I would only change two things: The AF button for Backbutton AF needs to be moved 1-2mm to right. And the back wheel need to moved out by 1mm. Otherwise the body is near perfect for me. On Software, I do not care so much about the video stuff as what it does is good for me. 4K120 would have been nice for animal slowmos. Software, besides continues AF improvement we need a Sport /Human AI Mode and really improved Face Detection. And a bit more customisation like able to set the FPS selection of the Front FN buttons. Apart from that there is not a lot I would want or change. For me the thing about the OM1 is that we finally have the AF system needed, high iso capability together with DeNoise Tools (ISO 12800 is my limit now), LiveND 6, the 5MP EVF & the new Menu system. And of course all the other great stuff that makes the Olympus System like the amazing Pro Lenses, the Weather Sealling, the SSWF, reasonable pricing, portability and flexibility, the great usability and the computational stuff like ProCapture, LiveND, HH HRS, Starry AF, Live Composite/ Bilb stuff.
The problem with OM-1 is that with such a fast sensor it could have been MILES AHEAD what it currently offers in terms of max video resolution (full res open gate) picture quality in 4K (except for 10-bit 30p), max framerates in 4K, image quality and speed of its slowmotion. However they screw things up in terms of processor power, data bus throughput, heat management and software design, so as a result video features are HEAVILY castrated. Pity, as this camera easily could have rendered GH6 irrelevant even with 20Mpix sensor.
OM system should look into dual IS also with Panasonic lenses. An OM-1 successor with dual IS also with Panasonic lenses, 24 megapixels, 1 stop better dynamic range and a simplified user interface for af (like the Sony realtime af) would be a tempting upgrade to the Panasonic G9. (Panasonic G9 user today, hopefully Panasonic will bring out a stills oriented G9II. But competition and having options is a good thing.)
I would consider to upgrade my em1mii with an OM1 if they were to include Human detection. I shoot a lot of sport where people wear helmets and googles and everything I read and see tell me that Om1 only has face detect that will only work (like my Em1ii) if you can see the face which rarely happens in my photography.
Good morning, Mr. Forsgard I still have an omd 10 Mark1, I would like to change but I'm undecided. I do street and reportage photography and I'm a hobby photographer. The biggest problem is shooting at high ISO and taking pictures in low light, for example in the evening. At 800 ISO you see noise. I know that's the problem with the micro 4/3. I currently have a 12-40 pro lens and a 17 1.8. What do you recommend to update with given my type of photos. Although I would like to be able to take more dynamic photos. I would not abandon the Olympus system especially for the IBIS and the optics. Thanks so much for the tips.
I think you should look into either the E-M5 Mark III or OM-5. I would get the OM-5 if the budget allows that. E-M5 Mark III as second is still a great value. If budget is no limit I would look into OM-1.
I photograph mostly birds and wild animals and I´m still using my EM1-X. Ergonomicly I think it´s nearly perfect and the image quality is good enough for me. I´m hoping for a OM1-X in the future. :) Of course you can use the battery grip on the OM-1 but you can´t replace the battery in the camera without removing it. That is a really stupid design... And you probably loose some of the weather sealing even though OMDS claims differently.
Great camera with one flaw that keeps me away. The buffer is too small. When they put a decent buffer in it, I will be with Olympus right off the bat. Maybe the next one. Will see.
@@ForsgardPeter The Nikon D500 is a 7 years old camera. It takes unlimited JPGs at 10 FPS and 200 shots in RAW files. The OM-1 gravitates around 100 JPGs and about the same RAW files size buffer. The camera shooting at 50 FPS will sustain 2 seconds shooting. That is nothing for action shots. Shooting at 120 FPS will be less than a second. too little. Need at least 30 seconds of continuous shooting with that FPS rate. My Nikon Z9 can shoot unlimited JPGs at 30 FPS and the camera has a 47MB sensor, not to mention it also shoots at 60 FPS and 120 FPS, the buffer of the Nikon Z9 is way bigger. Yes, it's a heavy camera. But, it does what I need and more. I still have my eyes on Olympus, I actually had the whole system when it was E-3 and E-5 I learned the Olympus optics. Wonderful, I had the Zuiko 150mm f/2.0, what a lens. But the promise of a great camera the E-3 which I still have it, and later the E-5 did not deliver. I am glad they did not give up, although they lost lots of market share after Olympus corruption dwon thing. As I said, I will get the system when they have at least 10 times bigger buffer. That is the only thing that keeps me holding back. Other than that the system is AWESOME. Zuiko lenses are AWESOME! All of it! But, for now, I am still carrying heavy gear : )
Real action shooter do not even need to use continues shooting. They know when to click. High speed is for us who are not that skillful. OM-1 can shoot 120FPS raw files in 20Mpix. If I am correct Z9 can shoot 11Mpix at 120fps. (according to DPReview). Not sure if there is a new firmware that speeds that up. Of course if you compare the OM-1 to Z9 I can see what you mean. No doubt Z9 is a better camera that OM-1. Z9 is also "slightly" more expensive.
@@ele4853 I do agree that I wish it has higher buffer capacity like EM1-X, However, I have never run into any issue hitting the budget except when I tried to do consecutive ProCapture of 2 sequences. That is to be expected though! I have yet run into buffer problem even when I shoot at 25FPS with SH2. I don't just keep hold of my shutter forever but would release and recompose, focus and fire every few seconds. I would hold down when necessary usually not more than 4 seconds. Having better buffer would perhaps allow one to change shooting mode faster. The current set up is that as camera clear the buffer, one cannot change shooting settings from one custom to another. It doesn't happen often but it will help changing from ProCapture to normal shooting faster and less pain. Or may be it is a matter of changing via FW update. Why you want to change settings, sometime, I shoot the bird against the bright sky then it dives down low where I would need to underexpose. It would be handy to be able to just push a button and change to different custom settings rightaway. I cannot do this until buffer is fully clear. I know I can shoot in S or A mode and have back dial on EC to change it. But sometime, bigger change in exposures would be requires not just the EC. One last thing is that I would like video AF to be improved closer to that of still. Lastly, hope we can use AF in slow motion videos as well. Trying to do that with super fast moving birds with manual focus is not easy :-).
I have had my om-1 for almost a year as well. I would not switch for any other camera. Wishes: liveND in other modes than M. I wouldn’t mind more mega pixels if it can be done without sacrifize. I would love to se a new AI feature, where they take maybe 1-4 extra half a pixel shift images and combine it to one 20 mpx photo it should give better colors, better DR and less noise. When it only combines 1-4 images with the original it should reduce the problem with moving subjects.
While the Subjekt Autofocus Detection work great on Cats, Dogs...for Humans, Face and Eye it still not that good like on other Systems. I hope they come with a Firmware update 2.0 where there have an Update for that. And and automatic Detection like on the new Canons would also be great so that you dont have to switch.
The OM-1 deserves major firmware update: a panorama asisst mode and upgrade of Face&Eye AF to match other AI AF modes in performance. More video goodies (1440p, H265 even for 8bit and pure 10bit 4:2:2 for those who dont want to grade the footage). And also more UI/UX improvements.
Let’s hope OMDS don’t start omitting features like Olympus were in the later years. It’s an absolute crying shame that the E-P7 doesn’t have MySets. This could be an incredible pocket camera if only the MySets were put back.
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY : -)
THANKS FOR ENTERING OUR WORLD!
Thank you.
I am a hobby photographer and I own an OM-5. It is a fabulous camera in the right-sized package; and great stabilisation.
thanks peter
You are welcome.
An improvement I’d love is for the general non subject tracking to improve. Adding human tracking would also be nice. Tracking a person playing sports without seeing their face would be nice.
OM systems should look at the Sony realtime tracking or even the old Nikon 3d tracking for how to build a good user interface around the af tracking
Thanks.
Great to hear! It is worth learning new things. Once you are ready just start from January!
I just checked and I see I got mine on March 5th, so I was lucky to get one pretty early myself, especially as I only pre-ordered it on 22nd February!
Considering the long history of making video camera products by Sony and Panasonic, I think it is hard for other players to catch up in a short time. In fact, if Panasonic announces a G9 mark II with phase detect AF, it may easily become the best hybrid M43 camera.
It is possible.
Good deal!
OM-D E-M1x . Fantastic ergonomics with the 300/ Pro. Easy to operate even with winter gloves (here the OM-1 falters)
OM-1 is also fine wtih gloves. It depends on the gloves. Vallerette has some good ones for photography.
❤you are the best !,
A very good introduction about OM-1, which I have on my "wish list".
I enjoy your videos, and you knowledge and humble charisma, but I missed some pictures in the end ;-)
The review was superb!
E-M10 mi iv, I absolutely cannot put down for street photography! Especially at night, amazing
Sounds interesting.
I'm a hobby photographer, and I really haven't explored all of the OM-1 in the 6 months I've had it. But off the top of my head, a few places OM could have done better:
1) Move the menu button back to the right side.
Really good points and if those improvements were made OM-1would be a better camera.
Thanks for sharing.
I love my OM-1 but as you know I take mostly wildlife. I love my EM-1X as my go to. My OM-1 is my travel camera. My EM-10MIII is my street camera.
Both could be great improvments.
Any news?
I will look into it and ask OMDS. I will get back to this as soon as possible.
OM SYSTEM has new website: explore.omsystem.com/ Have you looked from there?
I have receveid mine on 16th march, pretty fast for me, a lot of us had difficulties at that time !
That was early!
My second one is on the way! By the way the video of you talking from the LCD of the OM were quite cool.
Thanks!
did you get the 'sticky/stiff' dials on your first OM-1 that many others have suffered?
@@godsinbox No neither of mine had that.
That is big issue and would be great if OM-1 had better compatibility with gimbals.
Yes! Big gripe for me. I use a gimbal but can't access all of the features on it like you mentioned. DJI or the FeyunTech Pro I have really been liking. They definitely need to focus on more video support.
Interesting watching this now that you have moved to Fuji.
You asked what my best camera is and for me at the moment I am happy with the Canon R6.
The fun camera Pen-F ? Teaser for OM Systems
No it is not. I wish it was.
Thanks.
Hello Peter, are you able to use the built in ND filters for videos or is it only available for photography?
Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into it.
great
Hi Peter did you see that there is Firmware 1.4 for the OM-1?
Yes I did. Got heads up about it yesterday. It is about stability issues in video. Not sure what has been fixed.
I have tried everything…😢
Im beyond frustrated!!
Can u offer any suggestions???
Thank you !!!
It is very hard to say what is wrong. You have checked every setting in the Video menu?
You will enjoy the 150-400mm lens. Congrats!
Peter any comments on compatability of new OM system camera bodies with OMD Zuiko m4/3 lenses made by olympus? I would assume the OM system cameras would be fully compatible with older Olympus micro 4/3 lenses?
They work 100% together. There is no change in that. Olympus Imaging business was sold and OMDS is the new company that makes cameras.
@@ForsgardPeter thank you sir!
I will most likely do more content about OM-5 when I have used it a bit more.
---
Wishes for improvements:
Hi Peter,
I have learnt a lot about Olympus gear through your channel. Thank you.
Given the OM-1’s fast focusing, I am wondering whether this is a good camera for street photography-as well as nature photography. Your thoughts?
Best regards, Jay
Yes it is quite good for street photography. It is quite small and there are good lens options for both wide-angle and standard lenses.
Thanks Peter. What are your suggested lenses to pair with the OM-1 on the street?
The 20mm F1.4 Pro is a nice lens. I use it with OM-5. Also the 25mm F1.2 pro is an option. Panasonic has a 20mm pancake. It is an ok lens, but the AF is not the best.
Best feature OM-1 is Cat detection ..not perfect yet but its realy nice next Pro-capture combined with the diamond 150-400 Pro lens .
I’d like a few more megapixels or a mode where you have less megapixels but they do a handled less iso raw mode? Sort of averaging images taken consecutively in camera, maybe mix this with the digital teleconverter?
Hey Peter you asked after the camera the visitors use...
So here is mine:
I'm using most my Canon M6 Mark II.
Thanks for sharing. That is exactly how it should be. Use the camera that feels right.
Pre mf looks really good. I have only pre focused on film cameras and will check on my Panasonics. Otherwise I think I may be looking at an om5. Thx
Thanks for sharing.
I do not know. I agree it would be great if the info on the screen could be changed by the user.
You know the rumours that the OM-1 is engineered by Sony...
@@GrenlandUnderVann A fair comment, particularly as JIP have a relationship with Sony due to the VAIO purchase some time ago.
Yes, I have heard that, but there is no confirmation that it is made by Sony. We do not know for sure, it is a rumor.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I need to test HDR in OM-1. I have not done that yet.
You can't do HDR in RAW. HDR is combined raw pictures so the raw information cannot be kept as it's already altered.
Older models are very good too. The value for money depends on if you need the new features or not.
@@ForsgardPeter I know, I know. It is this "want" vs. "need" thing … 😁
All the best
Sebastian
Thanks.
I can’t afford an OM1 though and if I could I would prefer to spend the money on a lens though so I don’t think I will get a new camera for a long time…
sony ac7c2 main camera
Have you tried the helmet detection? It is meant for motorcycles, but can work also in sport where they use helmets.
Good morning, Mr. Forsgard
I still have an omd 10 Mark1, I would like to change but I'm undecided.
@@ForsgardPeter Thank you very much for your information. Congratulations for your channel
@@ForsgardPeter ... and an OM-D 1 mk III ?
@@avoututu I had considered it. Thanks. Maybe as a hobby it's too much but it's not a bad idea.
I photograph mostly birds and wild animals and I´m still using my EM1-X. Ergonomicly I think it´s nearly perfect and the image quality is good enough for me. I´m hoping for a OM1-X in the future. :)
Of course you can use the battery grip on the OM-1 but you can´t replace the battery in the camera without removing it. That is a really stupid design... And you probably loose some of the weather sealing even though OMDS claims differently.
Great camera with one flaw that keeps me away. The buffer is too small. When they put a decent buffer in it, I will be with Olympus right off the bat. Maybe the next one. Will see.
How much bigger the buffer should be? What are you photographing?
Z9 is 3 times the price and absolutely massive 😂😂😂. Also with Pro cap features why would anyone be continuously shooting anymore.
LiveND works also in S mode.
Makes sense. S is the only mode I never use :-)
Face AF works quite well after the firmware upgrade. 10bit 4:2:2 would be good.
On the 18th it's my birthday 😅 I don't have photo counts though 😬
Olympus PEN E-P2 😅
Still a good camera!
@@ForsgardPeter Kyllä tällä toimeen tulee.
Let’s hope OMDS don’t start omitting features like Olympus were in the later years. It’s an absolute crying shame that the E-P7 doesn’t have MySets. This could be an incredible pocket camera if only the MySets were put back.
I agree.
Panorama!…, artificial bokeh through Sensor shift, internal gps
All those could be good. That artificial bokeh would be interersting. How would it work with sensor shift? Do you know?
@@ForsgardPeter thanks, like on the smartphone with 2 optics (-> distance difference)
