Sweden and Norway were in union when the prizes were created and that is why Norway gets to hand out the peace prize, they had no independent foreign policy at the time and therefore no worries about who they might piss off with giving out the prize. Smart strategy, but then only a few years later Norway left the union.
@@zapfanzapfan It's right that Norway was in union with Sweden and that Nobel might have been influenced by this when he wrote his testament in the 1890's. Additional explanations might also be that: 1) the Norwegian Parliament had shown a solid interest in solving international conflicts peacefully, 2) that Nobel possibly regarded Norway as more oriented towards peace and had a stronger democracy movement than Sweden (just how the break up with Denmark in 1814 was solved, the political processes that went on when he wrote the testaments that later resulted in full independence to Sweden in 1905, and the fact that Sweden had been and still was a major military power), or as some argue, 3) that Nobel had a fascination of current Norwegian fiction and poetry that embraced peace (like B. Bjornson). Guess we will never know it all ....
I have a 144. I bought it having heard this story. I love hearing different telling of it. It is a quirky car with an equally quirky history. Great video! (I bet North Korea has the parts I need)
I stared watching supercar blonde and I absolutely love her videos especially this one of where she is talking about the impact of North Korea stealing Volvos in Sweden, it is quite interesting to listen to the backstory of how they have accomplished this is extremely fascinating
In the Hungarian exactly the same in that period , the government and political friends drove Volvo , normal people Trabant , Wolga and Ural motorbike , then you were lucky and have been waiting for a while !!
As a person who loves cars and play car games like aspahlt 8 and 9, forza etc. I’m happy thier someone else in the world who has the same interests as me
the cars last long because road salt is not used and there is no stop and go traffic which kills the drivetrain, also volvos back then were very well made
Not sure how to feel actually. I've been around awhile now. Should Sweden have allowed this? Who made them the peace keeper in our world? I really don't know. I'm sure glad they feel this way though. I don't think they should get the short end of the stick, but I think we all might be thankful.
Im from Sweden and i agree that we are peaceful and dont want to engage in war but help those countries and people in need, its wrong for North korea to not pay the debt they have to Sweden and other countries

I'm genuinely *lost* and *confused* as f*ck, what *exactly* do you mean the cars are worth millions? Did you mean in the terms of all 1,000 Volvos that were stolen put together are worth millions, or each one is literally worth millions? If anyone in fact does know what he meant, by all means please comment lmao .
That time those 1000 cars were worth millons because they were new, today each of them is worth around 2000 usd,but the debt is getting bigger, from 131 million to 320 million usd
N. Korea bought the cars in the 70's for appx $5 million. The debt of $320 million includes a lot of interest, late fees, and other collection fees. The value of the cars currently, assuming they are all accounted for, is about $2-$4 million. Each car is worth $2000-$10,000 currently, depending on condition. This would still fall far short of paying back what N. Korea owes to it's creditors.👍✌
I bought a 1979 Volvo 244 in 1989 for 5000 Swedish koronas, when I lived there, I'm telling you that car was a tank 👌 Amazing car, I miss it.
500 Kronor (crowns) not goronahz
@@Samisven SEK is not called "crowns" in English.

Sweden gives all the technical/economic/literature prizes, while Norway gives the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yes, a bit sturdy. My Volvo 142 drove 750 000 kilometers (466 000 miles) before we had to put it down.
You're lucky if your modern Volvo lasts 150 000 kilometers nowadays...

North Korea runs with a lot of help from China. So, car parts and accessories are not a big deal.
