    If you have ever seen people mowing the sides of highways with a device on a boom. There is a good chance you have seen a flail mower. Pretty common for uneven and rough places. They are basically the same thing as those flail tanks and whatnot.
    The only real major difference is the length of the flails. The length gives more standoff distance from the spindle.

    • @nightjarflying
      @nightjarflying 6 місяців тому +1

      The IDF operates armoured remote-controlled Caterpillar D9N bulldozers fitted with an armour kit, called "Raam HaShachar." Most of the time they use the manned version. They're not "semi-disposable" as a battle ready D9N probably costs $200k. 'Dozers are useful for clearing a narrow path for a military advance, but not at all useful for clearing a field or an urban environment - it turns valuable land into nothing worthwhile.

    Not just with explosives like in EoD, but with any job (civilian or military) that can be summed up as "removal of hazardous material", I take my hat off to all of you who do it.
    edit: btw something like a third of all shells fired during ww1 were gas shells, something like 10-25 percent of all artillery shells have been estimated to have been duds. So a quarter of a third of all shells are gas shells that didn't go off or in other terms around 8-9% of all shells fired on the western front. caveat: the error bars and overall range of the estimates over the years are pretty big. This is just meant to hammer the point home.

    Could we make these bombs biodegradable?

    • @richardbeckenbaugh1805
      @richardbeckenbaugh1805 6 місяців тому

      They are….in about 2000 years. Explosives in any form are also fertilizer. Some, like the explosive filler used in WW1 are contaminated with heavy metals like arsenic. So you get patches of ground with verdant growth alongside patches of barren land. Walking the battlefield of verdun, you can see where German shells(contaminated) and French and British shells(uncontaminated) fell. The phosphate filler that the allies used wasn’t contaminated with arsenic. The nitrocellulose filler the Germans used was. So you get a shell crater that either grows a lot of vegetation or a shell crater that is still barren more than 100 years after the battle. With mines, the casing has to dissolve, break up or go away somehow before the explosives can be used as fertilizer. Anti personnel mines have thin casings designed to fragment on detonation and are generally packed with additional shrapnel producing elements. Anti tank mines have much thicker casings which last longer. Either way, no one has designed a deliberately biodegradable mine.
