Krampus (or as we call them Kramperl) parades are rather new in my region. In South-Eastern Styria they were let loose on 5th December and roamed the streets. They were super fearsome, especially aggressive and there was a special kind of dare kids' undertook (including me). We provoked Kramperl to attack us, then ran from them. Since our towns are medieval (over 800 years old), there are lots of dark alles and spooky places where you could hide from Kramperl, or be ambushed by them.
When we were young we kicked them and ran away like it it is the last thing we are doing. this was so scary and i still remember 30yrs later like it was yesterday. back in these days, these guys really hurt you. they were drunk and had no issue with giving you scars This has changed, but still the masks make you still think it is a beast and not a man.
YouRubs I seriously remember when one guy had this hard hard stick broom thing and hit me. It was so hard that it gave me deep bruising inside and some out. They would also bang on our doors and never stopped.
I have seen this question asked here in the comment section, so for anyone wondering about the origin of the Krampus figure: I looked it up, and it dates back to pre-Christian pagan traditions of the Alpine region (so Austria, Switzerland, Bavaria in Southern Germany). "The character of the Krampus dates back to pre-Christian pagan traditions of the Alpine region. Quoting from the Wikipedia article I found on it (which I presume to be correct, it is properly sourced as far as I checked): "There seems to be little doubt as to his true identity for, in no other form is the full regalia of the Horned God of the Witches so well preserved. The birch - apart from its phallic significance - may have a connection with the initiation rites of certain witch-covens; rites which entailed binding and scourging as a form of mock-death. The chains could have been introduced in a Christian attempt to 'bind the Devil' but again they could be a remnant of pagan initiation rites."
Lol my mom took me to one of these paraids and it heckled back at the first one who came up to me and the second through sixth one who came up to me I stood perfectly still and gave them the " I'm not afraid of you and never will be and get away from me face" and the fourth and sixth one I jerked at them like " come at me bro" they patted my head...lol
you find them funny. i think they are scary AS hell. imagine you ging home at 6pm an suddenly some jerks like these running through the streets. and the real torture are their bells.first you hear them. then you See Them. lastly you run before you get beat up.
Well you have to know, this is a tradition in austria, that run is only happening before christmas in some areas They are not running on the streets at night illegal
The first time i saw them was in Salzburg,Redbull arena, i nearly fainted , was screaming to the top of my voice, uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Krampus parades are not usually seen in Canada. Some communities/areas may have them, especially with those Canadians of German/Austrian/Bavarian/Viennese decent. However, where I live, in Canada, we don't have Krampus parades at all.
I want to convert an existing large Halloween prop to Krampus. What exactly is the whip that all seem to carry in their hand and what is the significance?
The fabled Krampus would leave naughty children a bundle of birch twigs instead of a present from Father Christmas, or he would just hit the children with the twigs and take the children away.
we got exact same thing same costume "goat beast " back in Morocco celebrated by the bereber of morocco ww called it " boujloud" i would love to know what's the origin of this celebration

+smgy the uk & us will never see anything like this, to many religious nuts would go ballistic screaming that it's a parade for satan, plus there's no money in it so neither to Us president or parliament/the queen (not sure who decides what in the uk) would allow this.
+DarkDenGaming I live in Czech Republic ( Next to Austria ) And after more than 15 - 20 years that tradition in Austria, those Devils arrived to Czech .. Tomorrow I'm going to see them for my firt time .. I'm so excited and a little bit scared, but whatever .. I hope It will going to get to the USA onetime, because I wanna live there! ( Sorry for my bad ENG )

Den Krampuslauf in Graz is jo ausbaufähig forolm ohne Perchten!!!

Krampus parade
Krampus parades are starting to appear in a few cities in the USA, but somehow I can't imagine them becoming a holiday staple in certain regions.
I would love to start seeing them in the UK. We don't get them at all
