She is talking about her miscarriage. Such a painful experience, in the lyrics, she is blaming herself for being careless and her unborn child not choosing her because she felt she wasn't good enough to be a mother at the time.
She is so beautiful and such a rare talent. I hear her voice and it takes me back to a different life, when I was so young and naive and full of hope for love. I loved whole heatedly and felt like I would die from a broken heart if he didn't love me as much and as passionately and unconditionally as I still love him today. I have lost count of how many years it's been since I have seen his face or heard his voice. And even though it felt like I did, I didn't die without him. But the young naive girl I was that believed in true love, she died. I am still alive with a broken heart 💔. I love you Tori Amos. I miss the girl I use to be and how I felt when your voice was the most beautiful thing in a teenage girls life.
Sorry for butting up myself against your comment, but incondicional love is only a mother's love, between partners is a toxic thing, you wouldn't continue to love a man that treats you bad, would you? So love between partners has a lot of conditions, becouse everebody has boundaries, and it's a health thing. I hope you are feeling better now.
@@grazielaalmeida8438 I wrote unconditionally and I honestly don't know if inconditionally or unconditionally mean the same thing?!?! Reading and writing have been 2 of my top of my *things I love to do and really hope that I am half as good as I think I am* lists. But truly thank you for letting me know because I had no idea and I have wrote that in many not just comments but things and my personal life so you learn something new everyday. I hope you are staying safe and take care. I wish you the best of life.
For those who don't know, the song is written about a civil war prostitute who was impregnated by one of the many soldiers she slept with and ended loosing the baby, the father, and all the other soldiers. And she feels ashamed for not being there for them or her baby or being what wanted or needed. She's pleading that her baby forgives her for this misfortune, and asks that she comes back to her, but ultimately the mother accepts that one day she will die and that's when she will see her baby again. Until then, the soldiers will protect her.
I try and get my girls to listen to this, they’re busy with their own music, but I used to wonder who would show up at my funeral. Tori, Lana, and Maynard are bath music. Also.. stay, Rhianna
i personally think it's a mashup of both. ultimately about her miscarriage, but also projecting or imagining a life/relationship that could've been (which was obviously flawed and still resulted in her daughter's untimely death).
Does anyone else feel the sad desperation behind this song that I feel?
yes. cuts across so many lines.
Me
No, I just hear a Mother who did not care

the most emotional song from Tori. love it.
And 1000 Oceans
Without doubt. "Marianne" is the most emotionally invested.
Her music catalogue has so many, like “Me and a Gun”.
I say Northern Lad is up there too
Agree to all! She has a way to make those tears flow. I’m so excited to learn she’s coming by me this June in Buffalo NY!!!!
Nearly 20 years later... just to found out how good this Song is

Birmingham wasn't founded until 1871, 6 years after the Civil War ended...so does this song take place post- CW?
"Don't judge me so harsh little girl......

I think my favorite line is “I got a few friends.”
This reminds me of my mother. She wuz like that.
Gorgeous video 📸
I got a few friends...
My identification with this song being, quite literally,99.2%, I am intrigued to know exactly what she wrote it about.
My speculation, but she had a few miscarriages.
@@cremetangerine82 it’s well documented. Miscarriages. Poor Tori. From here to Birmingham, I’ve got a few friends.
Please feel free to request a song, if you'd like :)

Just a playboy mommy.....
I’m confused as to whether this is about an unborn child or one she could not come home to
