As Oct 8 rolls around again I look back with fond memories of THAT morning in 73. David Jessell was the first voice, however, I was the first newsreader. LBC had a 'wobbly' start, but we were part of the start of commercial radio in the UK after a 50 year BBC monopoly. Working with the likes of Douglas Cameron, Adrian Love, Keith Belcher, Ron Onions and the late Malcolm Rennie I'll never forget!
very much so...what a legend. superb on LBC..pronbably my earliest memory of the station. The Modlin family had a shop here in Waterloo. LBC was so good back then: Monty M, Tommy Boyd, Beedle, Dan Damon, C Bull, Doug Cameron, Brian Hayes, Adrian Love,Therese Birch..all legends... sadly missed..a once great radio station
Most of them are pretty good and they bring back memories of the entertaining talk station. My favourite is the 2008 one. It was so good it lasted for 6 years. I can't stand the latest one (2014 - Leading Britain's Conversation). It often makes me reach for the off button.
The 2003 to 2007 jingles bring back a lot of memories, the 2003 jingles are my favourite. Though I was a child then I used to tune into LBC a lot because I liked hearing how passionate some debates could get. Today I still love LBC as it's great to hear everyone's view on current affairs and not just politicians views.
Does anyone remember the music used by Clive Bull on his evening phone in in the 2000's that would be used as an outro to the news. I know it was from the Dewolfe library and it was called (I think) futuremix. I have checked Dewolfe but my memory is not that good. I do though remember a lot listeners asking about Clive and he always said that it was not commercially available, thus the info about Dewolfe. Thanks for any help you can all offer.
Yeah - Great memories. Remember the opening still :-( first carrier that lit up the little stereo light apart from the odd broadcast from Radio 2. Then joined the station in it's prime for 15 years in 1983. Must hunt through some old ROT's to add to the collection. (Jonnie Perry)
I have a great memory for all of those fine tunes, without a doubt, 1986/7 period was best remembered for the David Arnold/Mike Moran arrangements, such a classic soundtrack, enjoyed the traffic loop.
The 1994 theme is for "London Newstalk 1152", which was the short-lived replacement for LBC's AM station "London Talkback Radio" after the original LBC company's franchise was not renewed (the new company bought out LBC before it went off air, which is how they were able to revive the "LBC" name less than two years later). There were a number of variants used at different times of day. The version used here is from the breakfast show and perhaps the cheesiest of the bunch... I used to prefer the punchier variant used later on in the day (but can't find a copy anywhere).
+Aexexx The company owning the LBC trademark, and holding the franchise for the frequencies 97.3FM and 1152AM, became financially much weaker after it was told it had lost the new post October 1994 franchise and so it was bought out by London News, the company that had won the new franchise. (Wikipedia has details of the complex ownership and repeated buy-outs of the company over the years.) Due to the buy-out before October 1994, when it came to moving to the new franchise, the same company actually held both the old and the new franchise so technically and legally there was no change to a new company. However, London News had plans for new programming, a new brand and new name, so these were all unveiled on both frequencies at 6am on 5 October 1994, but in many ways (and certainly for the branding and station names) this date was now arbitrary. When in 1996 the decision was made to revive the LBC brand on 1152AM, there was no need to obtain the rights to use the name or even the jingles from the previous owner, because it was still the same company, so it already was the owner of the rights and the copyright. If the buy-out had never happened, the rights and copyright owner of the LBC brand might well have refused permission to re-use them on the new, and arguably failing, station.
MQsCues I remember lbc 1152 well It was a great station Pete Murray did a great phone in show from Monday to Friday and Peter dealey did the 4pm slot and made a name for himself by being rude to callers
There must be more from the 70s: "This is am on LBC"; "this is Newswatch on LBC"; "if it's worth thinking about, it's worth talking about, call Brian Hayes now 353 8111"; "news on the hour every hour from LBC"; "LBC, 261 metres and 1151 kilohertz, where news comes first"; "LBC News presents Night Final, a comprehensive round up of today's world, national and London news, Night Final"
talk about a trip down memory lane! :-) anyone know where I can get hold of 1970s LBC radio ad's - I'm looking for the 'Houndsditch Warehouse' one - would be amazed if it's about online
@exsoulagent did you have any luck? I contacted LBC recently to try and find an old Hertz car rental advert. I remember the Hounsditch Warehouse advert. It certainly was on a lot.
None of them are really "bad" as such, are they? Interesting that they went back to that old three note jingle in the 90s after ditching it a bit. Also the London News theme is pretty nice
Hearing the fantasticly exciting melody again, I'm greatly struck by the feeling, the remembrance of what an extremely small circle of thought I had in the '70's. Also, all the assumptions then subsequently discovered to be laughable, which made it such ! an innocent world, such as: if it's ' on ' the news, (the tv.and radio), it must be true; if it's ' in ' the news, (newspapers), it must be true; all the presenters were good, honest, decent men; all the politicians were, of course, patriotic, it's just that they differ about what's best for the country; the West is right, because it's the West, not the East; state ' education ' followed by years of drudgery during the rush hour may be vile, but its natural, it's right, obviously. Full of evil things though the internet may be, too, at least nowadays anybody who questions the world's mainstream values, its accepted ' truths ' is properly listened to, and is able to be heard; back before I switched all mainstream media off, such people were ' timed-out'; their calls to radio stations ' unfortunately ' not selected, coincidentally; subtly laughed at, by mocking presenters, in mock politeness, and a summary " Right, well, thank you (whoever) from Bonkers Brook; you weren't a university-indoctrinated automoton, so just be glad you were given a minute or two, as light relief from those who merely tolerate your life on this Earth ". To show how successfully moulded, and I mean moul-de(a)d most are, after all the exposures, and with lifes materialistic dissatisfactions greater than ever, since so many have been achieved, and have also only further dissatisfied, still it all carrys on. Yes, if only we can keep the values we've always had, and keep moaning, and keep re-electing the same people, no matter that they do, It'll all be all right in the end !
If I remember correctly, IRN started when LBC did and they provided the service to all independent local radio stations across the UK, in the same way that ITN did for ITV. At night, when LBC wasn't running a programme, they fed the news bulletins on the hour and half hour, but in between there was just a carrier signal to keep the line open.
And the ads .... The brick red building on Petticoat Lane ...... Barrats, Barrats, come to Barrats, Barrats Liquor Mart, yeah-h-h ...... 961 5 thousand (George Formby voice) .....
@LionRock08 All those name are UK talkradio legends. Used to listen to Clive Bull all night most nights. Loved Tommy Boyd. Catch it some Sunday mornings now but it's not the same. Not real keen on Steve Allen.

Ken Guy who was your favourite presenter ?

Clive Bull is still there in 2022.
Without doubt 1974 - 1984 was the classic era with the unforgettable three note crescendo. Ba baa baaaaa!
The 1974 jingle is the one i remember best.
Most of them are pretty good and they bring back memories of the entertaining talk station. My favourite is the 2008 one. It was so good it lasted for 6 years.

I reckon Jeff Wayne wins it hands down!!

Still a great station and the current lead up to the news jingle is excellent...
And Steve Allen has been there from the beginning and is still on the air to this day. He’s doing 7am to 10am on Christmas Day for example (2021).
He joined in 1979.
Gone now sadly.

Can't find any photo of Monty Modlin he was a presenter around the mid to late 70s when it was broadcast from Gough Square.
I have a great memory for all of those fine tunes, without a doubt, 1986/7 period was best remembered for the David Arnold/Mike Moran arrangements, such a classic soundtrack, enjoyed the traffic loop.
Hear hear!!
Loved the earlier jingle packages, probably to do with my age :(
The 2003 package still sounds good 10 years later
Gawd, I remember that advert! I also remember the ad for "interseal2000" Windows, it was sung in a George Formby style.
They need to bring back the LBC jingle tune, it's not the same without it.
6:30 When I started listening :)
I've put the intro into Jeremy Beedle's last LBC phone in onto You tube. The intro includes the Jingle into the news.
Happy Birthday LBC 39 years old
Great memories. 1994 is my favourite. Very catchy.
The best was 2007. It has the best flow. Please post the full theme it had such a building momentum.

MQsCues I remember lbc 1152 well
It was a great station
Pete Murray did a great phone in show from Monday to Friday and Peter dealey did the 4pm slot and made a name for himself by being rude to callers
i vaguely remember the name, i've tried to search him out to refresh my memory not haven't found anything yet
I remember a longer jungle in the 80's, mostly played during rude bits on Jeremy Beedle's late night phone in lol!
Brilliant memories :)
45 years now !
2005 & 2006 YES!
Fantastic.....they should do the same with Capital - although that has changed out of all recognition and jingles hardly exist anymore!
talk about a trip down memory lane! :-)
anyone know where I can get hold of 1970s LBC radio ad's - I'm looking for the 'Houndsditch Warehouse' one - would be amazed if it's about online
Thanks for that! I wrote that and Barratts Licqourmart any idea if that's to be found anywhere? Such great memories.
Nice work my friend but you forgot London Talkback Radio 1152am
Happy New Year
Antonio
@exsoulagent did you have any luck? I contacted LBC recently to try and find an old Hertz car rental advert.
I remember the Hounsditch Warehouse advert. It certainly was on a lot.
Images of Monty Modlyn while at LBC.
None of them are really "bad" as such, are they? Interesting that they went back to that old three note jingle in the 90s after ditching it a bit.

1994 is the weakest.
Ah sweet memories!!!

@marcus577 It's out there on the web.
What was the piano LBC used last year one that isn't used anymore?
Now I am stupid for thinking they used their current theme for that long...
@LionRock08 All those name are UK talkradio legends. Catch it some Sunday mornings now but it's not the same.
good lad. did u record the opening day of the new imaging or is it from my video? :O
great memories anyways :D
When was the first I.R.N. Bulletin?
If I remember correctly, IRN started when LBC did and they provided the service to all independent local radio stations across the UK, in the same way that ITN did for ITV. Was the 1994 theme by David Arnold Music?
1984 for me 1:43
And the ads ....

Barratt's Liquor Mart ;-)
Barratt's Liquor Mart ..... yeah--h-h
Wait, LBC EXISTS?!?!?!
L.B.C. never split like Capital did?
1980 and 2006 are my favourites - 1994 is cringeworthy.
Shame they are all such dismal quality - C'mon Steve and Chris?
What is
Yer good until Lady Porter got hold of it!
