sway bar bushings go out all the time, not just on Toyota's, but on every car I have owned. They are cheap and easy to replace. Very rarely have I had an end link go bad.
Great video! I have a 2008 Lexus ES 350 (~145,000km) with stock end links. The rear ones are knocking like crazy right now. I grab them and move them around with ease. So 14yrs is a pretty good life span! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your Toyota knowledge and advice. Alignment is mandatory when control arms, tie rods, ball joints or struts are replaced. One can actually feel the symptoms: steering wheel is not straight or tires make screeching noise during turning.
I've had to replace end links and SB bushings on all my old Camrys. The cheap aftermarket are garbage 2 years before it's loose and clunking on bumps. Moog makes great replacements. I love the feel of a tight suspension on a 25 year old car with 250k miles. People always comment when they ride in my car.
Moog is extremely hit and miss.
Ive done alignments at shops and than my steering wheel was off. So I learned to do a string alignment with a caliper some string and four jack stands that kept the string next to the rim. I've never had any uneven wear and when I let go of the wheel it drives straight for miles. Tons of videos online but it takes a lot of patience and bending over to check without touching the string.
Another EXCELLENT Video... you should consider adding a 5th segment called "cheating the alignment machine" which (as I understand it) some techs do by "bumping" the reflectors into spec. (rather than actually aligning the car correctly). I am not sure if there are other ways to cheat it or not. A demonstration of how this (bumping or other cheating) could actually be executed and identified (by an observing customer) would be an AWESOME video.
Thank you for watching! Unfortunately bumping the sensor is true and there’s another that’s even more dangerous but I won’t share it so “those” techs won’t get ideas. I think it’s much easier just to adjust it and call it a day. I mean if the tech does everything to get to the point of adjustment why not just adjust the thing instead of tinkering with the reflector? I just don’t get it

Our steering wheel wouldn’t return to center. And so my dad and I began going through UA-cam to learn more about steering (rack and pinions) and alignments. We are so glad we found this channel! We went through the entire series. Thank you CCN!
Thanks! '92 4runner pulled slightly to the right for 16+ years while I had it, but worn tires were always even. Looks like it's fixed now, at 187k, after replacing the rear springs (saggy 2nd gen) and rear shocks. '06 Sienna gets some shoulder wear on tires, though not as bad as when we first bought it used. And an alignment said the front camber was a little out of spec (they didn't have the bolts so I didn't do it). Maybe it was in an accident and replacing the struts would fix it, but it's at 186k now and we've put on 120k of that, so it hasn't been too bad. But like you said, if the tires aren't wearing out early and wearing strangely, it's not too bad.

Hello everybody and happy new year!!! i just wanted to share my experience so it might help somebody!!! Brand new Corolla Hybrid After 3000km and 3-4 visits to service they finally fixed a small knock from front suspension that was driving me crazy!! It was a 2 part hard plastic base and small rubber bushing that holds the front sway bar!!!! now the new part is a plain old big chunk of rubber and no noise!! no knock at all!!!! also replaced the steering rack that was making extra clunk at turns!!!! really hope thats the last of bad luck i was having!! Imagine buying your first Toyota and having to deal with things like that!! Thankfully the people in the dealership were great! and the car is also sooo nice to drive and calming!!! Life is great again!!!
What would cause a 2010 Rav4 rear end to wobble or bounce when going over bumpy roads on a corner. These video's are so helpful thank you!
Hi! I would check a couple common things. One is the rear shocks, second is the sway bar links as they are notorious to break. Another thing is to check the suspension in general and also tire condition and go from there.
I've never had too many issues with alignment issues on a Toyota. Old heavy cars needed alignments all the time because they wore out steering linkages and then needed new parts. Toyotas have high quality parts that rarely wear out. I have a Corolla that did need a camber plate in the back because one side had camber that was out enough to cause tire wear...albeit slowly.

I try to spray down all my bushings, boots and rubber seals with either silicone spray or AT-205 reseal. I am hoping this preventative maintenance will help my suspension parts last longer.

I really got into your conversation about alignment... when where and why... I played it back twice and really took it all in... soon after I purchased my used 13 Toyota Avalon hybrid at 50,000 miles.... I checked the tires by rubbing my hand across the tread and it felt rough on the edges and I knew I needed an alignment... So I took it to the dealership... they aligned it but... when I let go of the steering it would still pull to the left... so I took it back and they put a shim in it and that took care of it... now why didn't they get it right the first time?? I'm Vaguely Familiar about the red and green and I looked at the diagram... then at 60000 miles I had the struts and springs replaced for a softer suspension and had it realigned then... sorry for the long rant but I'm curious... why the second alignment the first time??
Thank you for your comment. So this is what bothers me about some dealerships. You take it in for an alignment they look to make the piece of paper look good not symptoms and the actual concern. I am more interested in why we are doing an alignment and I personally usually ask the customer. Because in the end I want to give you back the car with your concern fixed not with a paper that shows a sea of green but the car still pulls or cause uneven tire wear.
Sometimes green numbers on a paper could still make the car pull. Perhaps the technician who did the first alignment didn’t pay attention in the post alignment test drive. The 2nd alignment the technician paid attention and got it right to fix the concerns.

I have a question. My car is Toyota Corolla EE107 wagon 1992. And i replace all 4 tyres at same time and after 30,000 km front 2 tyres still good and i think it can run more than 10,15 thousands. But back tyres replaced with new ones due to wasted. What was the reason. Why it's happening like this... please explain me. Wheel balancing and wheel alignment also done. Thanks
2012 Corolla LE. My wife went off the road. The right passenger side front wheel. Went off in a curve. She got it back on without going off the road. And now we have a shimmy. It doesn't happen all the time and it's usually at 45 and up

That lack of the Allen bolt insert only is the reason I've had to replace the end links in my 09' RAV4
I've mechaniced a long time. Since I was old enough to pick up a tool and I've always had a quick mind and I study a vehicles specs and numbers before I touch it. But I've got a corolla in shop. 2016. I've done timing tensioner, both lower control arms both struts, engine mounts, cv axels wheel bearings cvt fluid and filter. Rear struts sway links sway link bushings. All was requested. The car has a shake. Not like a tire shake bit like a lose suspension. But at around 75 which is speed limit here it'll just vibrate and feel lose. It tends to walk any way it feels and wind. I won't even start on what wind does. I'm no stranger to speed but it scares the woman and when I drove it for diagnosis it made me let off throttle. Any thought? She swerves great, corners like a dream. It's only on straight aways at highway speed she just don't feel safe.
Yep I installed a TRD sway bar on my tundras rear end. I remember the rubber bushings. Easy replacement.
I saw somewhere else (can't remember where) it said if the front toe isn't perfect it's usually good for FWD cars to be on the toed out side and RWD on the toed in side. Hogwash or legit?
I’ve lived in Florida and now Michigan never had Alignment issues. Never had an alignment in any of my cars nor trucks.
The New one has hex keys on the back of the sway bar links. It fits and hold better without destroying the booth. The newer one are indeed much better, almost like Moog design but sealed. I love sealed boot
I just called Germany Toyota Dealer for my Corolla IM /Auris or CT200h, It cost €390 for both sides, I called Toyota USA, it cost total less than $250. It almost cost 2x in EU than USA for exactly the same parts. It is unbelievable how Toyota Germany Rip people off.
i made tools to DIY align my cars. Accurate to 0.02 degrees for toe and 0.1 degrees for camber (less actually but 0.1 is good enough). Unfortunately, having these tools does not help when my friend's Venza has rusted in place lower suspension arm nuts (i'm talking about 48740-48040). i was able to get one to budge, but the other was impossible :( i replaced the KYB struts at the rear, but one of them threw left rear toe out by at least 0.15 degrees :(
PS: can you explain why Toyota does not seem to use a standard size of fastener? Seems like they like to use different sizes for things that should be the same for some odd reason.

Sir what do you think about the PU bushing and PU cover boot on suspension systems. It tend to not to break or tear rather than that cheap original rubber boot cover and rubber bushing... kindly please help me...
You are 100% right as usual there are so many boneheads doing alignments nowadays. Find someone you trust and stick with them. And you’re also right if your tires are wearing flat and your car feels fine don’t touch it.
So my 2012 was rear ended 2 yrs ago by a girl on her cell phone. I took it to a Toyota body shop since other drivers insurance was paying. Soon after tires wore unevenly and squealed in turns. When I replaced tires and had alignment I needed camber bolts to get "back in the green". Thus you're telling me the body shop didn't actually fix anything other than the broken plastic parts. $1400 by the way and they definitely didn't do an alignment.
That is a 2012 HIGHLANDER. Still trying to find the intermittent rattle from the rear area that occurs while waiting at stop light.
@@ogee634 Four wheel alignment normally cost ~$120 in CA. Rear ending wouldn't change camber angles, but may damage the trailing arms if they hit one tire or side. Otherwise the damages from a center rear ending would be on the body.
How do you know your camber tabs needs replaced and or damaged. I have a 2019 Tacoma SR5 with 48,000 miles driven on pavement only. I did upgrade my tires from factory at 599 Miles to 32's without a alignment which i should have then. I'm getting inside wear on the inside of the tires.

One concern.
I usually keep a three ton jack and some other stuff that's not as heavy in the back of my 18 rav4 hybrid awd, can that cause alignment or suspension issues different than having rear passengers?
Manuel Montoya Hello Manuel! The three ton jack and items in the back will not affect your suspension or alignment issues at all. Carrying items in the car and/or people is normal for the car and the suspension is designed to handle it. Overloading the car with very heavy weight that remains in the car will have affects on everything but if not kept for a long time won’t affect things permanently.

Enjoyed the entire series. I was hoping to pickup on the cause of a steering issue I have with a 2015 Highlander. The issue comes into play when the transmission down shifts into passing gear. The steering wheel will torque out of your hands if you are not holding tight. We purchased this vehicle with 98,000 miles and now it has 176,000. It has done this for the entire time of our ownership. Tires, alignment, suspension, steering, and driving are all good otherwise. Should this be the way this vehicle reacts to an accelerated down shift? If not, any suggestions? Thanks

Rear eccentric bolt seized? I took my Lexus RX350 2008 for an alignment. Shop said "rear adjustment left side eccentric bolt is seized" and told me it needs to be replaced. If I understand this video correctly, since my car is not a truck, there is no "adjustment" in the rear, so I shouldn't care if the bolt is seized, right? There is nothing to "adjust" in the rear, and it's not like the bolt is going to break, so why should I care?
By the way, the shop didn't give me a printout of my alignment, nor was I wise enough to ask for one.
Camary 2014 155,000 miles the dealership said I need to replace swaybar joint links for 437 dollars. Not sure what to do .The car is not making noise. Is it safe to drive?
My 2005 Tundra DC's Sway Bar end links snap at the the top...each side's needed replacing 2x....with all the rubber. But snaps right at the top. Anyone else?

Hey AMD, on my 2009 Highlander LMD I changed out all OEM sway bar bushings & links, struts, intermediate steering shaft and still getting now slight clunking under bumps at low speeds and noticed clanking while stopped and wiggling the steering wheel side to side within an inch or two. What in the work would you say is the culprit? You are the best and reason I buy only Toyota anymore :) Thank you and God Bless.

I just bought a mint condition 2007 Avalon, I am a decent DYI guy who just can't leave it alone. How tough is it to get at the sway bar bushings in the front. Do I need to loosen the sub frame? After 17 years I want to change the rubber if I can. Anyone ever do them?
2018 xse 19 inch rims. just bought it. left front clanks on every bump and i swear if feels like it shakes after hitting a bumb...but definitely clank......thoughts?

Hi! Hard to tell from the video but check your tire pressure if it’s good then I’d be looking at strut mounts. But it needs to be verified. The XSE is rough and noisy because of the big wheels
@@TheCarCareNut Tire pressure about 37. i had it at 35 and 40. still clanky. i checked to see if strut mount was ok visually by pushing on the car. didnt notice anything. i have appt friday. crossing fingers not too much.
Can you please explain why Toyota attaches the stabilizer bar end link to the strut tower instead of the LCA like most manufacturers? Does it cause the stabilizer bar to act as a steering return spring?

How can I reach out to you? Even after doing alignment my tires worn on one side, I replaced the tires now and aligned again, want to make sure the tires won't worn out again
we've had 3 Lexus vehicles, all under 50k miles and all needed several alignments after tire changes. For some reason it seems like a common problem at our dealership when having tyres changed. Car comes back, no longer drives straight anymore with a centered steering wheel and pulls hard to the left. Still they never offer up a good explanation for why this has frequently happened to our cars. Any thoughts? Can changing tyre make and having only one tyre changed cause alignment to go out?
Hi! Some tires will have a condition called tire conicity which would cause a pull that’s not alignment related. Typically rotating that tire away from the front fixes the problem but then the tire needs to be warrantied as that’s a defect in the new tire.
When a car is serviced on Toyota center and it tells you have to replace or fix this or that, who rips off the benefit - service advisor or mechanic? Everything on Toyota center is done through service advisor.
My 07\215k mile RAV4 developed bad clunking noise going over bumps, typically worse in cold weather. I actually had new original ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links and bushings in a cart ready to order. I was gonna hold off on new lower control arms just to see if I have noise from the compliance bushing. After watching this amazing series I think I’m just gonna go ahead and order only sway bar links and bushings and see if that fixes the noise issues. Car drives just fine and I haven’t noticed any “looseness” in the suspension. Thank you very much for the content you’re putting out!

Hi, I changed my 2018 Camry Hybrid LE front struts six months ago (@ 110k miles) and now (@130k miles) my front right side makes noise so took it to the same mechanic. They showed me the front passenger side “link pin” (as they call it) lower joint rubber seal is damaged. They recommend me to change also the driver side link just to be on the safe side but it shows no damage yet. Should I change both of them and is there an alignment required after replacing the sway bar links?
I always buy OEM parts from the dealer and take it to the mechanic.

The sway bar links on my 2003 Tundra lasted about 16 years w 200,000 miles. I had the shop put in new bushings too. Big improvement.
Back in the 90s my wife’s Buick went through SB links about every 3 years. They were dry socket links. Poor design.
Our 2000 Venture had the same issue.
My 2015 Camry likes to drift to the left on highway speeds. Tires worn evenly and I live in a a pot hole city, portland OR. Would alignment help this?

Thanks for the great information on your channel. In case you're still responding to these older posts, I need to ask a question regarding alignment on a 2011 Sienna LE. My wife's Sienna with 183,000 miles has not been driven at all for the past 4-5 years due to health issues. I've recently started getting it back into shape but the main problem seems to be the steering wheel not self-centering after making turns. You mentioned that caster usually doesn't change unless there has been some kind of impact on the suspension. What is your recommendation on getting an alignment? Could the rack be the issue? The steering wheel moves easily with no noise or undue effort needed.
HI AMD, I have a 2006 SC430. I had shuttering of the steering wheel when I hit bumps so the dealer said it was the front struts. I replaced the struts and still happening; even on small bumps. Now they want to replace the upper and lower A arms and inner and out tie rods. Before throwing a few more thousand into the suspension, what do you think? Thanks in advance!
I found another video that shows a mechanic replacing those sway bar bushings ($20/each) on a Prius. You don't have to drop the front sub-frame to replace them they are bolted from the bottom with two cover plates. You just need to lift the car up. My car with 90k miles sounds just awful when you go over a bump (rattles my teeth).

The suspension workshops guys will hate this series. Most of them force you to change your good quality OEM parts for Chinese stuff because they say they can 'feel too much play'. The chinese stuff rusts within a few months, and only lasts around 3 years.
I have also wasted alot of money like this, trying to sort out one small item, as they make new findings while they strip away.
Only change suspension components when they are clunking really bad, and not when there is some 'play'.
Very often u will hear the same clunk after replacing all those parts.
Always ask for your old parts back.
Try to do it DIY where possible.
i watch your video regarding 2016 corolla S bad sound on the front and indeed it was coming from the lower arm if u are.approaching uneven surface like the driveway, i looked at it and use a fry bar to confirmed the noise , the rubber are visibly ok.. can i use my extended warranty from the dealership to get the lower arm fix? thanks
Yes this is a known issue that’s documented if you have a good extended warranty they will cover it easily and plus give you a rental for a day or two since it’s not a quick simple job.

Dealership fixed the bad noise coming from the front end.. they replaced set of lower control arms and both front suspension support sub-assembly. Test drove it seems no more noise appearing but now i’m hearing a clunking noise in the front while im backing up when i step on the brake, i need your expertise and good advise why im hearing this clunking noise after the fixed from the dealership? Thanks
I would have them double check everything but it could be pad shift which is a normal condition. I can’t hear the noise so it’s best to be on the safe side and have them take a look

I was told bushings ripped and leaked out grease and thus sway bar links must be replaced on my Toyota Corolla 2011. Don’t know if I have to?

Hi! It would need diagnosis. If the steering is working normally there’s no rush to get it fixed or checked out. Kinda of not a diy friendly system to work on.

Thank you for your hard work and honesty. It is much appreciated. Very thankful i found your channel. Im currently chasing a ghost knocking noise that starts after driving 20 to 30 miles in my 2001 tundra. If you keep driving once the drastic noise starts it keeps getting worse. Once you park and stop the engine til it gets cold, the noise is gone. Taken it to my normal mechanic, another shop and to a Toyota dealership with no success finding the problem. So far ive replaced struts, motor and trany mounts, sway arm, ball joints and changed the dif fluid to see what the fluid looked like with no better idea of what the problem is. On my drivers side sway bar link, the bottom rubber boot is torn. Should I wait until the part fails to replace it, or can I just change the boot, or should I replace it now?
If you own a shop and paid $35 Gs for an alignment machine, your mind set as to how often an alignment are needed, the intervals gets shortened. Same thing if you own a business changing oil, every car come in are in the severe service category.

Whoa. Hold up. No allen key...true. But, what about the 6 point nut on the back side of the sway bar bolt? Use a slim open end wrench on it to hold it while you use an impact on the outer nut. You were literally holding that part in your hand.
What if the sway bars are showing clear signs of leaking?

Hi! I recommend tire rotations every 5k miles. Rotate front to back. Some people cross rotate but that doesn’t exactly do much honestly in Toyota land

Thank you again for your channel ! So excited for you and your new shop. I wish you the best and I know you will be successful. I don't want to play the red /green game. Just put brand new tires on my 2013 highlander with 90,000 miles. The service was done by a local honest shop but I realize they are generalists and not toyota specialists. My alignment done after my new tires were all in the green except for the right rear toe which was measured at 0.32 the left toe was green and measured at 0.08 All other numbers were green. I guess I am playing the game. The total toe was also in the green. Have I ever misjudged a right turn and ran over a curb yes! but not frequently. I live in the Wash DC metro area which can have some potholes. They told me that the right rear toe adjusters were frozen in the bushings. To replace the bolt and associated parts were $$$$$$$. Was relieved to see your video on alignment. My question is can I take my trip? Do i need to follow up on this at a dealer? The car feels great much better with new tires. The old tires had even wear. No ride changes at all. Thanks again for your humanity. I love learning about my Toyota and I am super interested but I have Zero DIY skills.

Question, if I was gonna have my local Toyota do an alignment and I was do for tires but getting tires from somewhere else, do you recommend getting the new tires installed and then booking alignment at Toyota, or alignment 1st and then head over to my tire shop?? Or does it matter? Thx AMD
Hi! It shouldn’t matter unless your old tires are severely worn or abnormally worn. In all cases I would do the alignment after the installation of the new tires to take all doubt out.

Hello. Love your channel. So happy I found this channel...An honest master tech who knows his stuff. You are a Awesome person. I bought a 2002 Hghlander and put new tires on. The vsc light came on. I took it to a alignment shop and they did the alignment but didnt reset/recalibrate and the VSC light was still on. When I asked about the light he said he would have to diagnose the problem and charge another $100 more for that. he acted like he never heard of Zero point calibration so I left the shop thinking I needed to find a shop familiar with my problem. Do I need to go to the dealer and how much should i pay? Thank you!!

What fluid should we use? Another guy on youtuve says when he worked at Toyota dealership they always used clear power steering fluid instead of ATF.
I would use fluid that’s specific to power steering not straight atf. Any good brand that’s compatible with Toyota is good

I do it every time. I don't think it makes a big difference.

Thank you! I wouldn’t replace the water pump unless it has a problem. If it’s leaking or making noise then replace it. If it’s good I would keep going and not worry.
