I would hand a non-knife person a small fixed before I would give them a modern folder. Everyone understands how to use a fixed knife. They are in your kitchen.

Great philosophy. I carry a small fixed neck knife (CRKT Dogfish) and it's the knife I hand to non-knife people when they need something to cut with. They don't get intimidated at all cause of it.

Gerber LMFII. I travel in a city, sometimes in Subyways so I wanted a knife specifically designed for rescue in disaster situations because this is the only reason I'm carrying a fixed blade in a city. Serrations for various materials found in urban environments, insulated handle, builtin sharpener, window breaker for shatterproof cars or subway windows. Plus I prefer all black cause if attacked I don't want someone to see my knife. I prefer they feel it sticking between their ribs all of a sudden outta nowhere, ha. I carry a Kabar Crewman with a magnesium block, stone, 4'' ferrorod and a diamond rod in the front pouch when heading away from the city, rural. After SHIFT I will carry a Kabar USMC when searching for supplies along with my kabar TDI large serrated tanto for self defense more than cutting up stuff.

I carry my Buck 390 when I’m in the woods as my ‘wood knife’ for sharpening sticks and stuff like that, and I carry a Buck 311 as a ‘food knife’ for Bushcraft/ in case I get lost

RG Hamster I don't I am a true believer that the only thing that can stop a person with a gun efficiently is a person with a gun honestly knives are a truly sub-optimal option for self-defense they require skill to use and are very aggressive and violent in nature but with that said I live in California so I do what I can legally I do have more of a fascination with knives they are more function through design and aesthetic opposed to Mechanical function with firearms from a hobbyists perspective

Its a Compromise of the Jacked Up Law in many cases and if it was not for the Unjust Powers that Be many folks would carry fixed blades and carry them with Class & Style, but the Unjust Powers and sheepelle people have Unrealistic concerns about knives and types of knives and sizes. Even though a criminal has no regard for those Powers and other that do have a disadvantage when we need a knife for any reason at all.

david lynn Yes, but more so with balisongs. Most automatic and especially otf knives have probably lower chances of becoming a weapon against the user because of how easier they are to operate. Not to mention, part of the reason they are outlawed in some places is because of how threatening they may appear.

What you implying with self defense is that larger knife will most likely do a better job at inflicting a fatal blow, that will make it into a assault with a deadly weapon even if your the victim, you don't want to admit tour carrying a knife for self defense you carry a knife as a daily tool, if you happen to be attacked and had no choice to use it it then you have a good reason to use a knife in the eyes of the law, but if you are carrying a knife bigger than 3in fixed blade you have to have a good reason why you had it on you even if your state law allows you to carry a large one and you have to give extremely good reason and proof why you had no choice but to use it on someone, I carry a large knife but those are factors you got to consider if you need to use it for self defense, if the guy or guys want your wallet give it up if he want to kill you then use anything you have to save your life

If someone pulled a knife on me, I don't care how big it is, I shoot them. They brought a knife to a gun fight. Knives, even little ones are fine to create space if needed to get your gun, but a big Rambo fixed blade for me doesn't make sense for my system. I do carry a small fixed blade and a folder mostly for EDC chores.

That's some bullshit. We have a law that I think is similar here in NYS. It's illegal to carry a knife with intent to commit a crime. Whatever the fuck that means. Basically, I think it's a way to add a weapons charge if they charge you with another crime.

    • @dubwilly7134
      @dubwilly7134 6 років тому +1

Rebel Scum yeah but we aren't aloud to carry anything for self defense.Like if you said the reason you had a knife on you was for self defense you'd almost definitely get in trouble, also as far as I'm aware if someone attacked you and you defended yourself with a knife they can charge you for it. I'm pretty sure mace is illegal too

I love fix blades, and carry one nearly every day, but only a fool uses a belt knife as you suggest. If you don't care what you look like, and can carry whatever you want, then carry tools designed to do those other jobs. Ordinary belt knives like the ones you have in this video ARE cutting tools. Period.
For those other tasks, you need a hatchet, or, if you can't resist using a knife, then you need a real bush knife or machete. Using an ordinary small to midsize belt knife for all those tasks is both dangerous and amateurish. It's pure silliness.
Fixed blade belt knives do offer convenience because you don't have to open and close them. If it weren't for this convenience, which is most often ignorance, I doubt many belt knives would even exist. The plain fact is that we have seventeen hundred years of history that proves folding knives are superior in every way to fixed blade knives for nearly all outside uses.
In plain fact, belt knives throughout history have mostly been very large, and were used only for fighting/self-defense, and for skinning and processing very large game animals in the field. That's just about it. For nearly all other cutting tasks involving a knife, the pocketknife was king. A good pocketknife can do anything a fixed blade should be used for, and if the pocketknife has more than one blade, as it should, it can easily do things that are difficult, or nearly impossible for a belt knife.
Using an ordinary belt knife for chopping is, frankly, stupid. Using one for chopping, whether with the edge or with the spine, that doesn't have a lanyard, is moronic.
If you want to chop, but a bush knife or machete designed to chop. Or, if what you chop most opften is heavier wood or brush, then buy a hatchet, or a well-designed tomahawk. For most people, a hatchet is better. For people who know the wilderness, and know hos to use a well-designed tomahawk, by which I don't mean the silly, small, thin, toys you see most often on UA-cam, then no tool out there is better for all around work.
Really, you can use a staple gun to stir a pot of stew, but you'd look incredibly silly doing it. The same is true of using a belt knife as you do. Only now you not only look silly, you're being dangerous.

Firstly the primary purpose of a knife is to cut nothing more nothing less. As for the needs you're describing for a fixed blade that's not an EDC concern for 99.9% of the population who carry a knife. If I'm going to go in the woods I've got a specific set of tools I take with me but if I'm going to bed seeing Monday through Friday Mercurio small pocket knife cuz that's all that's needed. Explain to me why you need to remove material why you need to do spine whacking why you need to do all this while you're training dogs. Spawn whacking should never be done in the first place with any kind of knife it's moronic. That's why you carry a hatchet or small axe. The whole rebirth a Bushcraft and then this notion of ultralight Bushcraft has created this spine whacking crazy and everybody wants to go out and split wood with a knife. The amount of energy you're going to expand doing that you might as well just carry a small axe or Hatchet because it's going to be way more energy efficient and the weight that you're carrying is going to be justified in the amount of energy you save doing any tasks with it. Now if you want to carry a small fixed blade I can see that, LT Wright Patriot is a great little knife to carry Hefner Knives Little Bear, Esee Izula 2 those are all great small EDC fixed blades. But carry a large fixed-blade as an EDC knife just makes absolute zero cents for anyone. As for your pistol cartridge scenario Usher You compromised with a 45 ACP I can carry 10 plus rounds in a very small lightweight package for what it is whereas with a 44 magnum I have to carry extremely heavy large five to six shot revolver so you are compromising. I get what you're trying to say but I'd rather have the 45 the 44 magnum I'm sorry lighter easier to shoot more rounds. as for it correlating into fixed blade knives it does with this example because like you said you know you're going to carry a semi-automatic for self-defense but then you turn around and give a perfect storm scenario where is if you know you're going to go shooting and you know you're going to hit your target then you carry a revolver but you don't know that you're going to go shoot and you don't know that you're going to hit your target so therefore you want to carry a tool that offers you more options and that would be the semi automatic AKA folding knife because it gives you more uses more and most of the time. Yes there are going to be instances where while you're using a folding knife you might say why I wish I had a fixed blade but those are enough on a weekly or even monthly scale to Warrant carrying a large fixed-blade.
Here's what Mors said about knives.
