My two cents: The love for tape sound was certainly evoked by somewhat blurred memories of those not-so-funny experiences of reinstalling wired tapes in my Walkman (or other similar devices). Or movie nights, where that worn-out VHS tape almost ruined the evening.
So let's get this straight: If you don't like that particular degraded tape sound, there might be better alternatives for you.
But if you're into that melancholic cassette/VHS tape sound, Generation Loss MKII by Chase Bliss is a great addition to your equipment park. The emulation of different tapes and their degradations is spot-on! It might be expensive, being a three-trick pony, but if you are searching for that sonic behavior without relying on software, there is no real alternative out there. Plus, it's solidly built and offers broad flexibility feature-wise. I found it great on pads and leads, but Generation Loss MKII also works great on a complete mix, that is, if you like to go full-on tape mode.
