Man, this was really eye-opening for me! I didn’t realize that so many people would donate to Blender. Even as a student, I can afford $5 per month for a program I use almost daily. I think of it as a kind of licensing, but adjusted to my circumstances-especially considering that Cinema 4D for students costs $75 annually. Come on, people! Let’s get Blender the proper funding it deserves! Imagine how much better it could become.
@@Al1987ac it does get good funding from companies but the more the project is being supported independently the better. A huge company could theoretically pull the plug on giving financial support but donations spread across a large community is more stable.

Lots of respect for you Ton! So many open source projects with potential don't make it big, but your vision and integrity is what brought blender to the height of competing toe to toe with industry giants. 13 years ago when I chose blender, no one around me even knew about it. Nowadays so many artists working in the German game industry vouch for blender, calling it their favorite tool, that's an incredible feat. Happy to be a part of the 2%

if these examples from video are top sellers then second seller made around 100k $ per year. 10% for BMarket, 20% for taxes - gives around 70k$ - of net income (I doubt 7 years ago that addon was sold for same 55$ price though). Median salary in USA is around 60k $. First seller made around 2x more, which is great income - if he/she made it alone (if not they again we split it by 2 and got another average salary...) . So while these devs, can live from their addons I would not say their pays is much more above average (and if we assume they are the top 1% of BM sellers, then 99% of other sellers wont earn half of that)
Good observations. Ton equates business revenue with "money made" by these addon "resellers"(?). This is at best absurd, and at worst malicious. He ignores historical price developments of these addons over the years, ignores market fees and market subscription fees, ignores discounted sales, ignores affiliate fees. After all these are subtracted taxes will be subtracted from what is left over, and while I'm not sure where you are based, where I am it's more like 40%, or even more, not 20%. In addition, he ignores that these addon devs operate as businesses with all the risk associated. They wear many hats too, they don't just develop the addon, they develop the ideas, workflows, then implement it, then document it, market it and finally have huge overhead from product support, which in many cases consists of explaining Blender basics to customers, and is completely unrelated to the addon itself. Since they operate as businesses, they have the usual business expenses too, and may even have to pay staff or hire temporary help. I can tell you from experience that they pull insane hours too. Think 100hour weeks and weekends are non-existent. Weekends often also see an uptick in support requests, and at least in my case are usually dealt with right then too. Finally, on top of all these fees, cuts and expenses, addon devs are human after all and - just like Ton went through the effort to break down - also pay insurance, rent or mortage, water, heating, internet, and yes also want to pay into a pension fund of some kind. Comparing self-employed addon devs or companies, that build Blender addons to Blender Foundation employees and insinuating, that addon devs make too much money in comparison to them or himself is absolutely wild. He did it before too, and at this point I see it as a toxic trait and active sabotage and vilification explicitly targeted at addon devs, and for some reason not at any other big creators in the blender ecosystem, some of which make plenty more than addon devs and are sitting in the audience. Ton also conveniently and repeatedly has ignored the massive additional value commercial addons bring to the ecosystem in terms of extending and widening Blender's capabilities. I can't count how much I've heard from customers over the years that they switched to Blender due to my addons. I hear similar things from other addon creators. And yet we are the bad guys, and interestingly I have head the same things already when I came into the ecosystem 7 years ago. There is absolutely a disdain for commercial addons within the BF leadership, always has been. I assure you with confidence, that the creator of the second addon didn't make anything close to 700k in 7 years. Although I wish he had.
