    I just ran across your channel recently while doing research on the Marshall JVM 410 I was looking at buying (I did order the JVM 410C) and was really impressed with your videos. You have fast become one of my favorite guitar channels. Keep doing what you're doing and you will find your channel growing by leaps and bounds.

    Being a big fan of vintage tone I was suprised how much I liked the JTM. Its got a crazy amount of Clarity .
    I liked the SV20 the best though . The Jubilee was my second favorite . I have a mini Jubilee and its fantastic.
    Damn I want a JVM now . The 50 watt 1 by 12 JVM is tempting now.

      Yeah the JVM surprised me as well. And what I used in this video is just the OD1 channel. Each channel has 3 gain modes, and there are 4 channels! An in depth deep dive of this amp may be forthcoming - would take about a month to shoot LOL! Just kidding. I might do one on this amp.

    I just sold my JCM2000 after having it for 6 years and don't' miss it. I could never get along with it and this video confirms what I thought. I have an SL-X & SC20h. I put a HOT MOD v2 into the SC20 it's like a different beast so much more gain. My favorite is the SL-X. Need to put the Boss GE-7 in the loop to add lower end. It's a beast of an amp from low A/C D/C crunch to high saturated gain with insane sustain keeping the old school Marshall grind that the 2000 & JVM just don't have.

      I’d LOVE to get my hands on an SL-X. Been on my bucket list for years.

    I have a similar habit - I always use an old Rochester MXR Commande preamp pedal - that is unpopular with many on the internet that never used one. But it works amazingly for thickening the sound up and goes hand in glove with my old solid state Marshalls (never tried it with my 1980 Marshall valve head). I don't ever want to play without it, and I tried other amps but got rid of them all for Marshall. Love those old skool latter riffs at the end, much better than modern Djent stuff.

    Great Video! I own multiple Marshall Tube Amps, and each one sounds exactly like a Marshall.

      Ya know what? I used my JCM2000 for YEARS with a Keeley Modded SD-1 in front and LOVED it. It was so powerful and brutal.

    Love that Greenback, for a Marshall this is a great choice. Also their 25w current production speaker satisfies me greatly. All the M magnets are such a good choice. H magnets, sounds harder and stiffer, I guess to be expected. V30s have a bass cone, so your drop tunings can really thump your inputs. For recording, that’s not ideal. You handle it well.
    Since I don’t have any pedals, I can’t really hop up the front end any way besides using a different guitar, hotter pickup. To get that drive sound sometimes I set the mic pre with a hotter input level and this adds some mic pre gain (and noise). To carve the bottom I move the mic toward/away from center. The volume change from this mic position really changes so much bottom end and the proximity effect is used to get something I like.
    You sound amazing! Those are some great recordings, really enjoyed this video, I love Marshall.

      Thank you for such kind words! It took me a lot of time to find a miking scheme that works for me but with this setup, I've found I almost never have to move a mic - I've got four 4x12 cabs each with the same mic setup permanently set up and wired so I can just switch between amps and cabs and be ready to go. Really makes switching things up (amps, cabs, pedals) a breeze!

    I think it's worth mentioning that Marshall introduced the Origin 20 and 50 in 2018, I believe. This amp is somewhat of a re-issue of their old circuit JTM 45 with some slightly modern appointments like the boost, the tilt, to replace channel input jumping, and the effects loop.
    I own a JTM 45, as well as an Origin 20, and I can say that they did a pretty good job with getting the old circuit sound and feel.

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow

      Completely understood. My intention, with my comment, was to add that while changing their sound and supplying more drive / gain needs, ect., there is an exception to this with the fairly recent addition of the Origin.

    I have a few Marshalls, most 100W; each one becomes a fav, then I go to the next. I recently picked up a new DSL40CR and I think it sounds great, it's my lowest watt Marshall - I prefer big power sections. My current fav is my JCM-900 SL-X 2100 with 5881 power tubes.

    Killer video!! They all sound great. I love the slight upper mid range bark that the Vintage/Modern has with V30’s in your demo that is less pronounced with Greenbacks. I have the VM bottom cab with my VM head, but sometimes run it through my 1960a cab with 2 V30’s and 2 Greenbacks in a X pattern for something different. I love my Vintage Modern, but this video has me missing my JVM I sold a couple years ago……might have to get another one…..🤔

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for your kind words!
      Yeah, the VM is a special amp - it sucks that it didn't catch on because I believe it's special on par with the release of the JCM800 series. At the time, though, everyone was more concerned with more gain, more knobs and channels etc. I think if they re-released it now, without the spectre of another 'new' release, it would slay! I'm gonna do my part to revive interest in the VM.
      Thank you for watching!

    • @christopheranderson2158
      @christopheranderson2158 3 місяці тому

      @@TheGuitarNerdShow I think the VM will eventually be one of those more rare sought after amps in a few more years. They’re a bit harder to find, but once people hear them, they seem to really like them. I even use it with some preamps like my JMP-1 into the fx return to just use the power section. There’s something about those KT66’s that sounds big and open that pairs really nice with other pre’s. Try it if you get the chance! 👍

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому +1

      Wow! That's a great idea! I do have a JMP-1 that's been modified by Voodoo Amps and sounds insanely good. I usually use it with my Marshall 9200 power amp - that thing is a BEAST to carry around! Strangely I've never even thought to use it through the FX Return of any of my amps - I'm gonna have to try that - thank you!
      As for the VM - man, I bought that sight unseen last year - I'd never played one. Something in my mind kept telling me to try and find one so I did, got a decent deal on it (I think I paid around $900 USD on it). Once it arrived and I set it up and learned how to use it - whoa Nelly!
      To be honest I think that it's easily the biggest Marshall 'sleeper' out there. Those who've used one know how amazing it is, but being released alongside the JVM in the era of Nu Metal tones and everyone seemingly wanting more gain and more knobs, it just fell by the wayside and that's a shame.
      I'm thinking of making a video going over the amp and showing how versatile and amazing it is - because of it's relative obscurity I don't know how many views it would bring me but that amp deserves a higher place in the Marshall hierarchy.
      Thank you for watching!

  • @markn4526

    Interesting comparison and demonstration of the Marshall sound thru the ages. All the amps sounded great and my comments are relatively speaking. To my ears as you progressed thru the amps, the sound became less "splashy", more "controlled" and duller sounding (in my opinion). The "Plexi" sounded more harmonically rich while sounding more raw and "wild". Personally, I prefer that "Plexi" sound. I have a '72 Super Lead with a PPIMV mod that some of my fellow guitar player buddies comment that it is a difficult amp to play thru. I think it's because of that out-of-control characteristic it has. It definitely takes some getting used to and an adjustment (more control) to your playing style, but you're rewarded with that marvelous organic "Plexi" sound. Once you get accustomed to hearing it, other amps seem to be somehow missing something.

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому +1

      Man, I couldn't have put it any better! I only got my SV20 a few months ago, but once I lit into it, it immediately became clear to me that that 'something' I'd been trying to get through more overdrive, pedals etc, was there all along in the form of the Plexi.
      Now, since then, I've learned that you can get some of that through other amps if you crank the Master but it's still not quite the same. I will say, though, when I was making last week's video on the Vintage Modern, I experienced a lot of the same kind of awakening - and it stands to reason - that amp is based on the JTM45 and it's drive tones are very organic.
      Thanks for your thoughtful and kind words and thanks for watching!

      @@TheGuitarNerdShow Sure thing! I've never played thru a Vintage Modern model, but I've heard good things about them though. I don't think Marshall makes them anymore. I've never played thru a JTM45 either, but I have played thru a late-90's Bluesbreaker Reissue which is basically the same amp in 2x12 combo form with a tremolo circuit. It was one of the best amps I've ever heard.

    I have a Marshall DSL40C with original 70/80 speaker and do you have any tips on how i could get it sounding closer to a Plexi tone?Maybe a out board EQ or with the EQ settings on the amp itself?

      Buy a Celestion Creamback, 70/80 honestly are kinda meh

      To be honest, I'm not sure. I'd say, probably, put a Greenback in it. If it's the old school DSL (I have no experience with the 'newer' DSLs), use the clean mode of the green channel. Dial the bass back a bit, crank the mids and highs and drive that clean channel with lots of preamp gain and especially volume. That should go a long way.

      I found the green channel far too boomy and the red channel far too gainy. So I've swapped the preamp valves (V1 and V2) for 12AY7: their gain is around half the supplied 12AX7 (=ecc83). This allows the red channel to be used (well, at least the first quarter rotation of the gain pot!)
      Don't give up on the 70/80: I think it's underrated, and I prefer it to the greenback and creamback.

      @@digitalchris6681 Thanks for the info!Speakers are priced too high for me to replace and hope a different one may sound better then my original 70/80,i cut out a round 4.5" piece of felt(same size of a CD) and taped it to the inside of my speaker grill to filter out some of the high end harshness,this works like a beam blocker and i think it sounds better!

      Which 900 do you have? I don't have any experience with the JCM900 series/line but I'd sure like to check 'em all out!

    the ubilee def has a lot more top end sparkle, the JVM2000 seemed scooped in the mids. Otherwise, they were all "Marshall". That circuit is really strong.

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому

      I was really surprised at how scooped the JCM2000 sounded net to the others because I've used that amp more, by a long shot, than I have the others (because I've had it for nearly 20 years). I used it with a 4x12 loaded with G12-65's and the modifications were voiced for that speaker. Interesting how they translate to other speakers.
      Yeah the Marshall circuit - whatever it is that gives all these amps the Marshall sound, is very strong!

    JVM 410h is one of the most underated high gain amps of ALL time! Nice tones!

      I'll be totally honest - the only channel I get along well with is OD1. OD2 hasn't done it for me and to my ears, I haven't been able to get what I want out of the Crunch channel - that said I also haven't spent enough time on those modes to try and dial them in - I'm sure if I did I'd find some sounds I dig.

    Steve you have become so…… well known for that Strat that at first I was like, what in the hell is he playing lol. My opinion of Marshall’s have never changed.. they are the best plug and play amp out of the box. Meaning you don’t have to search to long for a tone.

      Ya know, I don't really think I have a favorite, for the most part. That said though, if I just wanna plug in and play for the heck of it, I think the SV20 is my go to - it just has THAT particular feel. But if I wanna play some crunchy rhythm stuff I might switch to my Jubilee....or my DSL.....or my JVM....LOL! I guess it just depends on what I'm playing at the time.
      Thank you for watching! Cheers!

    And the best amp is: all of them, but VM is a shame that went out of production. The best Marshall made since JCM800.
    The amp that makes millions of tones just by rolling the volume knob of your guitar! And Marshall caracter all day long!

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому

      I agree - actually, I think I prefer the VM to the JCM800 line. More available gain and the character is more 'Plexi' if that makes sense. It can sound beautiful and it can sound mean!
      I just shot sort of a deep dive video of my VM today, it should be edited and live on Saturday.

    I have an unmodded 75 1987 MKII 50w and a 04 dsl 100w full stacks. I can get the DSL close but the MKII is too unique. The response and the feel is hard to emulate.

    So I open up your video about Marshall lamps and you’re sitting there with an acoustic guitar in your hand? I know it’s just optics but? Anyways, I didn’t watch the video because of that.

    • @TheGuitarNerdShow
      @TheGuitarNerdShow  3 місяці тому

      It’s not an acoustic guitar. It’s an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Aged white finish. And quite a great sounding guitar. Should've watched. 🤣
