I agree, but I think it's not rather learned or taught, in the sense that you are given certain routines or things to guide you to improvise, the thing about is improvisation is it does not rely on what is taught to you, hence it's improv, if you were taught several patterns to be played in this way and that way in that place it wouldn't really be improvisation, I would recommend honestly just watching a whole lot of improvisation from other people, and the more and more you hear it and are exposed to it the more you can pick up as a reference, and you will have that idea of what you can improvise in your head already and all you have to do is execute on the piano, and that is what he can teach you then, how to put what is in your head and play it on the piano, Improvisation can't be taught easily since it isn't exactly supposed to be taught but he could give tips, but what would be better is picking up what you think is proper improvisation yourself then learning how to put that onto the piano. I don't have money to pay for lessons either. Learn about basic harmony and learn about what sounds good in the key signature of whatever song you're doing, and that's basically a whole step above people who are beginning as you can infer what might sound good and your fingers can just move around the keyboard, and as long as you know which notes will sound good in the scale or key your song is in, you're going to be completely fine.
