Brother XL-2600i is not a machine I would recommend. If you have one be very careful. ( Video 119)

  • Randy Your Sewing Machine Man- Here’s a machine that has a PLASTIC HOOK ASSEMBLY!!!! In my opinion, that’s a recipe for failure. The hook assembly contacts the needle on a routine basis and needs to be chrome plated steel to be effective long term. You can reshape and polish a chrome plated component to renew it and make it workable. A plastic part breaks and needs to be replaced. That’s an Added expense, if the part is even available.

I have one of these. Not expecting it to last for 50 years, but for $88 7 years ago it has been an excellent machine to learn to sew on. It's paid for itself many times over just from saving on alterations costs.

If you limit their exposure to heavy use, they can last a while just doing light repairs.
If you can skillfully do your own alterations, as you obviously can, you can get good use out of a minimal machine.
If a person’s skills aren’t top notch, even the best heavy duty machine will fall short.
Good for you, for getting the job done on that machine. 😎👍🏼

Update about me using a thick thread in my Kenmore 158. I'm a retired auto mechanic and part time inventor with little experience in fixing sewing machines but understand mechanical things pretty well so just sat and studied the machine for a while, I sew thick materials at times so tend to help pull it back through, that may defect the needle some. Pretty sure the needle plate is machine punched so the slot has nice square edges on it. I just rounded off the back edge of the plate slot a bit and now my machine handles the thick thread just fine without fraying.

I've been sewing on this machine for a decade, with some issues. But since it's my first -and only- sewing machine, I thought it was me not knowing how to use it and I have adjust it to make it work for me. This machine has done its work and then some (I use it almost daily) but poor thing is ready for an upgrade. With this info, I will make an educated decision next time. Which machine do you recommend for a sewing aficionado that's not a pro, but loves to sew and try new things?

Watch my videos and you will see the machines I recommend wholeheartedly with two thumbs up.
Unfortunately, not many (if any) new machines are on my list.
Get a vintage classic Singer (500a)(401,403,404) etc or a vintage classic Kenmore (158 series, front load, 15 class) and find out what a real sewing machine is like. 😎

How much money did they actually save by making the hook out of plastic. $5? Maybe? God knows what else is made of junk.
Give me my late 60s to late 70s Kenmores ANY DAY. Love your videos Randy. One reason is that you always respond to our comments. Thanks, Ron

My mother won a Necchi machine when I was 4. Not that I'm sensitive about my age, but let's just say it was more than half a century ago. It just died. I can't even be sure it actually did, b/c I gave it to a neighbor, they fiddled with it, & pronounced it dead, when it worked fine the last time I used it.
I haven't had any trouble w/my Brother xl2600I, but I feel like I'm gonna break something all the time. Not a very enjoyable way to sew.
So...lesson learned...when possible, buy an older machine...& never, ever, give one to your neighbor. ;)

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 I see your point.I really appreciate your taking the time to show valuable information But, not everyone can afford more than $60, or so, even if they're experienced. It's good to know there may be a problem w/the bobbin case, if the worst happens. Realistically, how much is a new case? Seems as if most people could change it, w/o paying a fortune to a shop. Another thought, too, is that, as you said, many manufacturers are using plastic. It could be really hard to avoid it, especially w/a limited budget.

@@bpaulsen6701 my recommendation is to find a top notch used machine that is far superior to this one. It will most likely be less than $60. If it’s a Singer, it will be from the 60’s or 50’s. Try an old Kenmore or New Home. There’s plenty on my channel that I recommend and they can be purchased at thrift stores and pawn shops everywhere.

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954

Can they then send them to you for installation and fine tuning?
Parts are cheap. Qualified labor technicians are expensive.
Just about any machine can be re-engineered and rebuilt if the parts are available. Are the parts made to specifications? Are they warranted against failure.
It’s easier, in my opinion, to just avoid the poorly made sewing machine in the first place and skip the hassle of rebuilding it for a cost that exceeds its value. Your. Mileage. May. Vary.

    How to fix timing issues

  • @lucillehall88
    @lucillehall88 2 роки тому +1

I purchased this very machine, I see that Brother has discontinued it.
The problem you discuss in this video is exactly what happened to mine. It took me a little while to figure it out; I'd only used it a handful of times over the last few years. I watched some UA-cam videos on fixing it, but because I don't have any experience at all with fixing them and they are relatively complicated, I took it to a repair shop. They said it was a timing issue and I had to take it to an authorized Brother repair place. The authorized place said it costs $80 just to look at the machine.
Since I think that's about what I paid for it, I found a used Singer at a (poorly lit) thrift store for $25. When home, I realized how dirty / fuzzy it is, and it's missing some key components like a foot, bobbin, bobbin case, etc. The thrift store said they'd let me return it if it doesn't work - I'll be returning it because I can't test it without investing in those parts, and considering the sorry state of it - I'll have to give it a nope.
So, I watched a couple UA-cam videos specifically about fixing the timing, extrapolated to my machine, are available to get the timing fixed. But then I noticed that the tip of the hook was cracked and sort of dangling. I tried super gluing it back together. LOL. That actually almost kind of worked. But, I reinstalled the bobbin case too soon, because those two became one. It was a bit of work getting them apart. Now I can't seem to superglue the part back in again - perhaps the acetone used to dissolve the super glue also damaged the plastic. LOL.
I do see that there is a metal part to replace it (#XC8987021) for somewhere around $23. No idea if it's chrome plated steel though as you indicated is necessary. I've not readily found what kind of metal is used, or if it's the same type everywhere sold. I'm guessing it's aluminum.
I could just go get a different used Singer, but, because they do make the part for the Brother in metal, would you recommend just getting that and seeing if it does the trick or trying my luck at a thrift store?
if you've read this far, thanks for sticking with me. :-)

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 I think so too. When I acquired it, the machine looked like it hasn't been used in 20 and maybe 30 years. Lots of elbow grease to clean it and get it running, an adjustment to the stitch length mechanism and it now runs practically silently. Despite warnings to the contrary, it also has no problem at all with 15x1 needles. Next step is refurbish the pedal and clean the commutator in the motor and I think I may even take up sewing.

Make sure the needle isn’t bent or blunt.
If you’re sewing on a woven fabric or one with a high thread count (percale sheets or pillow cases), use a specialized needle:
      1) Schmetz S. T. R. E. T. C. H.
      2)Singer needle # 2045
They were designed to cure skipped stitches. 😎
