This is what frustrates me about Disney’s Blu-Rays. They tune the picture when they bring their films to Disney+, even for non-HDR films, but the Blu-Rays are left with inferior color grading and contrast.
4K Blu Ray you get certain surround sound features when you're using your surround sound system and you also Are In Control of what you own and 4K DVD you get better picture quality and the reason why streaming slows down has well too many people are on it online streaming at the same time it slows down both have got benefits and their negatives.
This is mostly due to the input and mode setting: vivid, cinema, standard, etc. the Dolbyvision is set more accurately compared to the hdr10 from the Xbox which likely has a ‘hdr bright’ mode or ‘hdr vivid’ mode instead of normal ‘hdr standard’ which has the warm 2 color temperature
Ultra Bluray is superior to stream. The audio is less compressed compared to streams since most streams focus on visual quality and not audio quality. Kaleidescape is the only digital service that is uncompromised. However at a luxury price for the equipment too.
The xbox source Hdr10 looks a lot cooler (whites look blue, skin tones more saturated) where as the apple tv source Dolby Vision looks more natural (whites look more white and skin tones look natural) did you have both sources set up similar? Seems very different to other comparisins between the 2, looks like the xbox source settings is set at cool colour tone? Which one do you prefer to the eye?
Mike Normansell it wasn’t too scientific tbh. I was doing it for fun but the HDMI inputs have the same settings. I agree the Apple TV looks better on this but to the eye I felt the Blu-ray was better and no variable bit rate...or reduced compared to streaming. But I have to say the streaming guys are getting better. Netflix 4K looks very good ...as long as you have a good connection 😂
Yeah i agree, netflix and Amazon prime look very good, although i only see hdr10/hdr10+ on prime as Dolby Vision (netflix) not supported on my tv. I thought your video might look different to the eye which is why i asked, cheers for the reply 👍
Theve made it so the 4K discs have a watered down version, making the D+ version superior deliberately...its not completely down to Apple TV, i have an Android TV and it looks exactly the same, i have it on Home Cinema setting with True Cinema motion flow and natural tempature The D+ version looks better and more natural like you say because its superior and to be honest it looks way better imo....i honesty prefer the D+ version than the regular Blu-Ray version....i dont own the 4K discs and glad really....i fully support physical media 100% but in the case of Star Wars i wont be getting the 4K set since its been watered down and you can tell in this video
@@Nick-vc1nq Although i don't think Dolby Vision is as good as people make out i agree 100% with you on this, especially when Disney have reportedly stated they want to abolish physical 4k media and use streaming platform only. Using DV on disney+ and hdr10 on the disc adds a little bit more credibility to that article.
I prefer the look of the HDR disc version. On my LG OLED I have found that streamed Dolby Vision is the brightness equivalent of HDR with the ‘dynamic contrast’ setting maxed out. It looks ok until you do a side by side and realize you’re actually losing some detail due to the extreme highlighting. For a while I thought Dolby Vision looked better but once I did a side-by-side on the new Temple of Doom 4K I realized HDR 10 is just fine (I generally boost dynamic contrast to low or medium)
Err, you can’t do an accurate video/sound comparison like this. Both sources need to be calibrated differently and it also depends what disc playback device you use. The Xbox is not a great Blu ray 4K source in my experience and you’ll get way better quality from a dedicated Panasonic or Sony machine. It also matters what HDR standard is being picked up by the TV such as Dolby vision or vanilla HDR and whether that’s the same. All things being equal (ie the master copy), the blu ray will always currently look and sound better based on the bitrate, but whether you can visually notice the difference depends on equipment quality, calibration, screen size and scene as well as your vision and hearing. I’ve noticed loads of streaming stuff looks fine in bright scenes and falls apart in dark scenes in a dark room.
bro it's so easy to make the 4K Blu Ray look like the streaming footage. go into the settings and either use the cinema profile (which uses the D50 light point instead of D65), or nowadays there is this new profile called "FILMMAKER MODE" or do it manually by changing the tone levels to "Warm 2".
Streaming in 4K just isn't worth it unless you have incredibly fast internet. I'm happy with streaming in 1080p and using 4K discs for movies I really like
It looks like the Apple TV just has different settings applied set to a warm color. The Blu-ray looks to me like the TV settings don’t match what they have it for the Apple TV. Maybe even set to standard instead of custom.
Something to note here. When Disney started releasing 4K discs, they chose to go with HDR10 across the whole line. That includes Star Wars and marvel movies. It wasn’t till about 2 years ago that Disney made new movies released with HDR10/Dolby Vision. Almost all of Disney+ 4K movies automatically have DV. It’s an odd choice. Physical media trumps streaming. However, older discs are HDR10, and there’s no changing that. I don’t think Dolby vision is enough to choose streaming over physical discs. As more companies stop making 4K players, it’s going to bring in the demise of physical media. I prefer discs, but it just seems like most of the world wants convenience over top quality. You buy 1 movie vs a 1 month subscription to a streaming platform. I’m almost sure 90%+ choose streaming. For me personally, I have titles on discs for movies that I really want. And I’m ok with streaming everything else.
Just get Star Wars 4K77 for the real experience. I've seen this version both with DNR and without DNR on a 65" 4K TV. I've got to say, I hate DNR, but without it, it's probably a little too grainy for TV (as it's intended to be projected), but the DNR version has a nice amount for film grain for TVs.
