    Milo is the real deal when it comes to the rotational swing. For many years I got stuck in the Hands and Arms swing. I worked at it for a long time and could never get it repeatable. I also lost a ton of distance and power with it. Thing is when I first picked up a club many years ago my natural instinct was a rotational swing. I got good at it real quick. Then for some reason and many bad lessons over the years I got worse and worse.
    In just two weeks of working with Milo's concepts it all came back and natural. My distance and power all came back and it felt like over night. I'm amazed. It took me 6 hours of practice to get my hips to move again. They had become frozen in 30 years of hands and arms swinging. This swing undid 30 years of bad lessons almost over night. I went from a 2 handicap in my twenties to a 15 over the years. Staying in the process the other day I played 7 holes in even par. I have not done that in years. I hit all 7 greens. The last time I played with my old swing I hit one green in 18 holes. I couldn't hit my 8 iron over 110 yards.
    I have some refining to do with it. I start spinning my hips too much but it's like night and day and I can't wait to play again!!!!

    Hey. So I'm 6'3 240lb smasher from NZ. Been playing golf for 2 years and am down to 14hcp but all the while feeling the pain from hip drive up and tilt to the left(Lefty player). Have spent the last 2 weeks on the simple 50yard drill back and through then to the 9-3 drill with rotation rather than normal swing. Not only has tension gone in mid back but my path and face is so much easier to manage and a solid straight draw consitiently. Thanks heaps!!!

    This is essential information for any golfer. Logical and accurate in describing how to prevent back problems! Also, when golfers early extend or elevate the lead hip higher, they can either right lateral bend more which can aggravate the low back or they can straighten the trail elbow and wrist sooner in order to reach the ball. Better players will usually right lateral bend to reach the ball as this keeps the arms, wrists, and club head more stable through the impact zone, but is harder on the back. Lesser players will usually straighten the trail arm and wrist to reach the ball which causes the club head to be more unstable through impact, leading to a flip-roll release and inconsistent shots. One approach leads to back problems, and the other leads to poor quality shots. What Milo teaches is spot on--how you can easily reach the ball, protect your back, and hit great shots!

    Followed you and Mike M for awhile, irons were gud but longer hybrids, woods, driver not so consistent. But had already incorporated ur Bell type of swing (hips higher in BSwing) and shear force rotation that does not compromise the back muscles. I get the shallowing but have to setup a little more athletic to squat/move into L thigh and keep hands higher in early transition. Now all clubs are going well tnx a bunch!

    Milo, great video.... I've been watching you and Malaska for a few years and really enjoy your rotational swing concept. One variation I have added into my swing is a slightly dropped back and flared left foot to encourage more hip rotation, which I believe, helps prevent an injury to my left knee. I used to use a square stance with no flare, and this caused left knee pain and severely restricted my rotation.
    One thing I've noticed in your swing (and Mike's) is the rotation of your head, and how well you sequence, and use it to lead everything else. I always hear "you didn't keep your head down" so often that it makes me ill. My opinion, is head rotation is key to a great rotational swing (e.g. Sorenstam/Duval), however I struggle with doing it well. Do you "see" the ball at impact, or are you already looking up at your target, or are you seeing the ball with your right eye peripheral vision??
    Might be interesting to see a video on the importance of head rotation, how you do it, and what you are seeing and feeling at impact.
    Thanks for all the work you do, and I hope I can get down there for an in person lesson someday.

    As a golfer who has suffered back injuries (blown disk) thank you for covering this important topic. It gives me a good idea of how to protect my back and prevent reinjury. I also think golf instructors should be re-educated and stop teaching "X-factor", jumping through impact, and too much side bend to protect golfers.

    • @Blue_Dun
      @Blue_Dun 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah Alan, following teachers who taught the x-factor swing on the golf channel years ago I'm sure sped up the osteoarthritis, spurs, pinched nerve, etc I suffer with today. I'm astounded that there are still golf pros teaching it today and even advocate minimal hip turn as a way to prevent back problems. I'm here to tell you that it appears as I write this I am likely going to have to give up the game and I believe the x-factor swing is partially the culprit. The depressing part....I just retired in the Monterey/Pebble Beach area so I could play all I want on the great courses here. I may have to polish up my fly casting skills and move to Idaho or Montana😁

    As someone with long term back problems (nothing to do with golf) I found this extremely useful. There is a huge amount of golf material on social media these days looking at the swings of top players but really not much comment about the potential injuries an amateur might sustain by trying to copy some of these players. Excellent topic.

    I’ve had issues with rotating all the way through my swing for quite some time. I thought I couldn’t do it because of back injuries I have sustained during my basketball days. It was remarkable to see myself doing it after only a short time of instruction from you. And the most amazing part is how it actually felt better on my back than it did previously with throwing the hips and arms. Now my hamstrings, that’s a different story. They were a pretty sore after, but way better than dealing with back pain.

Looking at these pros like Justin Thomas and Jason Day and even Tiger Woods, I would think that they have so much invested in their swings that they would have to take off at least 6 months to reconstruct their swings and I don't know if they would want to do that. If I were them, I would do it because I don't think their bodies are going to last long. I am waiting for Justin Thomas to fall off the map unless he changes his swing soon.

    Milo,
    As an expert in injury mechanics I just want to say that you are exactly right. In fact you probably couldn’t say it better. There are other causes of back pain that are more life/energetic in nature (good example is Tiger), but from a best case scenario, Milo’s swing has a great chance of staying pain free. Discs in the spine herniate up to 10x faster when they are loaded and have a combination of flexion, rotation and side bending. In Milo’s swing you will see that he has all of those factors but not at the same time and they actually occur at the optimal time for injury prevention! Alan Nasypany

    Thanks Milo, this is a different Kevin Murphy than the one a few messages below. I like the concept of taking the pressure off the back. I've always had trouble getting my weight shifted to my front foot...this swing thought seems like it would help shifting the weight? As this relates to baseball, do you have the feeling you are pulling the pitch, hitting up the middle or to right field? Look forward to giving this a try on the range. Thanks again.

    Thank you for addressing this topic. I, along with many/most ardent golfers are hobbling around with compromised backs. To combat this I recently started to experiment with the stack and tilt swing method. One major back saver concept within that method is to fully straighten the rear leg (no knee bend) at the top of the swing. I notice that you keep your right knee flexed at the top. Wouldn't straightening your right leg at the top add to your back saver method or do you deem that as unnecessary ?

    Insightful and kinesiology wise you are spot on as related to back injuries. Obviously Tiger has experienced these exact issues.....one question on your swing, which is very powerful....your face looks closed coming into impact.....is that your thought and does it relate to “not forcing clubforce” rotation in your swing? Do you consider closed? Thanks for your videos

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  5 років тому +1

      Ken Klassy thanks for the reply. As for your question on the club face I address this in my recent video on release. In this particular swing the face reaches square to the swing arc pretty early which gives the appearance of being closed, but requires less late face rotation to hit a solid shot. This particular shot was a gentle fade which is my preferred shape.

    I have been working on something similiar. I try to keep my backswing as free flowing as possible. I really use a lot of hip action in my back swing and I don't force my shoulders to turn. At age 66, trying to turn almost solely from the shoulders is a huge mistake. In the downswing I keep a conscious picture in my mind of the arc and try to keep my upper body moving along that plane until well after impact. I think Dustin Johnson is the closest to what I am feeling when I swing. I line up square and then pull my right foot back slightly and swing along the foot path and have developed a nice little draw. My next goal is to work on a fade swing as well. I don't think you have to hood or open the face at address to create these shots. I think it has more to do with set up and swing path.

  • @kevinshoemaker5466
    @kevinshoemaker5466 Рік тому

    This is my holy grail. I just looked at a model of the spine with my PT and was discussing hip elevation and stacking on the back side hip vs a more rotational flatter plane. (He is a TPI trained guy) . If you have a back injury, it depends on where it is. He showed me the lumbar(lower) spine, where the facets are blocked from more than 1" of rotation and tilt structurally, while the thoracic spine has a ton of ability to rotate and tilt. The key is the series of exercises and stretches I need to commit to in order to keep the tspine (mid back) well greased, because it is so compromised by modern life (computer, driving,sitting).
    I can see how your mechanics can actually help with lower back wear and tear, but the key is left side flexion on the back swing (activated by left leg coming toward the ball or in). With your downswing then, the squat is started after recenter and partial pivot, caused by back side switching to flexion but staying down at contact BEFORE full extension on left side. I am going to work on this to see if it is better than what I am doing-I think it will help
    Thanks!

    I also wanted to add, I am 55. I'm still in great shape and can swing this way but I was concerned with hurting my back. This is a great video if you are worried about that. Which we all should be, seeing what Tiger went through the last four years.
    The other thing is I wanted to go back and not worry about where my hands and arms were. I got so caught up with fixed positions my swing lost all it's flow.
    This eliminates all that !!!!

    I HAVE found that to rotate. my hips through. the downswing I need to do a little squat at the end of the backswing that gets the weight on my left heel and off the front of my left foot. If. I dont do that my left leg cannot internally rotate to allow the pelvis to rotate and open up.
    If I dont get the weight on the heel I rotate on the front of my left foot like Justin Thomas who has to actually jump off the front foot to allow the pelvis to rotate to prevent injuring his lower. spine from rotating which is very dangerous and will cause injury.

    Have you had any clients with neck fusion. Been trying to find a swing that keep me from fatigue late in the round. I have played using the MM method and also using the squatting in transition. Always wondered which swing puts less stress in the neck/shoulder area . Since you have teach both just like your thoughts. I do keep my posture with the MM so I don’t extend up . But seem like I keep better wrist conditions with the squatting into the ball. I really enjoyed this video.

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  4 роки тому

      Yes I have had 2 or 3 students with neck fusion. I have also had many with back fusion in different areas. I taught the MM for a few years and had some success with students however I have had significantly more success teaching my own ideas. Both can work well. As far as fatigue what is fatigued your hands and arms or your back? With the athletic motion I teach the force is moved into the thighs and gluteals which tend to be less prone to fatigue.

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  4 роки тому

      Paul Malone the main issue I have with the MM is better players won’t hold back rotation in transition and always hit pulls and hooks under pressure. I have watched Mike teach hundreds of lessons and this was a recurrence in his students as well as 0 lag tension. I am not beholden to any method just athletic motion that creates the geometry necessary for optimal shots. Check out my Instagram for real life success stories.

    • @BamaPaul
      @BamaPaul 4 роки тому

      Golfletics my fatigue is across the top of my shoulders with tightness. I’m was around a scratch golfer before surgery not now ha . With the MM method I really have to shallow my arms to not hit that pull hook you talk about. With the squatting method I can’t seem to get the club speed I want. My swing is more down the line with that method and don’t hook the ball as much 👍 yes I deal with that nagging fatigue with all swings seem like .

    • @BamaPaul
      @BamaPaul 4 роки тому

      And yes I have noticed even in Mike swings on UA-cam he has no body rotation and hardly any shaft lean. Hips are not open hardly any 🤔

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  4 роки тому

      Paul Malone good observation. All of his students that successfully apply the Malaska move are also square at impact. I can explain why but won’t here. In my opinion the MM is a bandaid for players that drag the handle, so many high handicap players see immediate results but it’s not the optimal way to swing.

    Another great video Milo.. alot of the torque some of these young players are placing on their bodies
    May certainly cause injury later.

    If power comes from rotation, then how is it guys can hit a ball over 250 yards from their knees?

      Power comes in many ways. The most consistent strikers power the swing with their big core muscles and legs. The arms definitely play a role.

    No disrespect Milo but your rotational swing is only safe for the back if you have no past or present problems with either the knees, hip, lower back or thoracic upper back. But if you have a problem with one or more of those areas, the other ones will try and compensate and they in turn will eventually get injured. I have spent the last 4 hours researching information on golfers with bad backs and the experts all say what I mention above. If you are young and supple your swing will work fine but if you lose mobility in any of those areas as mentioned then that’s when the trouble starts. I know this because I am 71, reasonably fit but I have had lower back problems before and until I tried your promote swing I was fine but I am now suffering on my lower right side after trying your swing because of those reasons and once I feel better I will go back to my more lowering of the arms and then turning in the downswing which I can handle. Cheers.

      I’m sorry you have back issues. What I explain in this video is the safest most powerful way to swing when done correctly. If you injured your lower back you were probably firing your hips up and forward. There are alternatives like the one you mentioned for players with back knee and hip mobility issues for sure.

    its tough, I think alot of the injury comes from watching pros, and trying to compete with them. You cant even consider ever being able to compete at the top level unless you can swing 110mph, but probably more like 115. So, you get scrawny kids and people with no gym work, out there giving it all they have to produce those numbers so they can learn from there and one day go pro.

    Why can't you start your body in a lower position and then come up instead of going down and then up?

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  4 роки тому +1

      Tom Campbell because the way your body is designed pelvic rotation stops when it begins to extend so we want to get the turn mostly finished before the extension begins!
