  • How to remove your carbs from a Kawasaki ZXR250 and change the float needles and seats.
I have finally discovered the cause and resolution to the hesitation at approximately 8,000 rpm, when you jam the throttle open. This happens because the bike to rich under approximately 10,000 rpm. It would seem the cause of the richness is due to changing the muffler to a less restrictive one. In a perfect world the resolution to the problem would be simple, by changing the clip height on the needle. However the needles aren't adjustable and can't buy jet kits from dynojet.
This leaves us with only one method of leaning the bike out and that's via the float height. Increasing the float height does have some disadvantages though, it will lean out everything. This means you need to drastically increase the pilot screws out from 2.5 to 3.5 or more. Increasing the float height from the stock 13mm to 15mm significantly improves bottom end power and improves fuel economy. For me didn't completely remove the hesitation as mine was VERY bad, but im unwilling to raise the float height any more.
Even if the hesitation is only slightly noticeable it indicates that your bottom is far too rich and would benefit from a float height increase.
Interesting the same hesitation is noticeable on the zxr400 with the stock fueling and a replacement endcan.

Make sure your wires aren't corroded, especially considering the age of the bike. I have a 1987 Ninja 250 and same issue as you and the ground wire just turned to dust from corrosion. The other thing is you can try replacing your starter solenoid. Try a known working battery, that will eliminate the battery problem, because a charged battery doesn't mean that its still good, it could be shorting when you crank (put a heavy load on the battery)

thanks for this. I refereed to it when removing mine. loosened the 4 clamps. but geez it was hard work to get it off. I was thinking I was hooked up on something. or had not removed a nut or something. BUT nope. just old and stuck in place.

At 15:52 into the video, where you say not to lose the brass bit... I've lost mine while cleaning. Any ideas on what it can be replaced with? It plusates without it in there and when I blip the throttle all sliders go back down bar this one, which slowly returns.

Hey mate, I recently fully disassembled all 4 carbs on my ZXR250 to clean them (the bike had been sitting for about 15 years). They're all back together now but need to be tuned up and synced. Do you have any experience with syncing them? I've got a vacuum gauge but don't know where to connect the vacuum lines. Getting to the screws to adjust the butterflies to do the actual syncing looks like it's gonna be a mission too. Oh and one last thing, what does the Pilot screw on each carb do? The manual says 2 and a half turns but is this something that will need to be adjusted for each carb to get them running right? Thanks

when u twist the pilot screw in the carb you are closing the fuel and air. you need to tune it and then adjust the idle

Yeah mine had that. New carbs wont fix it... It happend cos the back pressure was changed thanks to the changed muffler. i tried changing the jets but it did not help.. I believe it needs new needle but that shape. who knows...

I agree, seems stupid to set the Floats that way......I set my floats upside down, and still have NO load on the Springs anyways! If your floats Sag down upside down, the needle is probably old!

Hi, I have a ZXR 400 and I have problem with my carbs. When I look into the intake socket of the carb of cylinder 1 i can see (in contrast to the other 3 carbs) that a whole lot of fuel is just flowing out of the main jet into the carb. Could the problem be the floters needle or is it more likely to be a main jet needle problem? Thanks in advance for all your answers.

7:00 the original screws are JIS (japanese industrial standard) and not philips. They have a small dimple on the screw head. You need proper JIS screwdrivers to remove them without butchering them. Almost no one knows this, but anything from Japan will have JIS screws and not philips head.

    • @Ultrasonictwo
      @Ultrasonictwo  7 років тому

Sure but no one in my country would have a clue if you started to talk about JIS. Here anything like that is considered to be "Phillips" even though it not the truth. Everyone knows what you mean. The screw driver wasn't a Phillips one too.
It's a it like how in some countries people call vacuum cleaning "Hoovering" where Hoovering is a Brand and not and Action but everyone in that country calls it Hoovering anyway even if they know it's wrong.

Great video; nice to see someone taking good care of their pride and joy. I was pleased to see your patience in that you’re committing to only one modification at a time (ie not drilling the slides ‘til the fuel issues are first resolved.
The term JIS refers to the design and not the brand or generic name and not "Everyone knows what you mean". I have yet to meet a single mechanic from any Japanese motorcycle dealership that knows the difference between the two. I agree that hex socket head screws are a better alternative for general maintenance however the JIS screwdrivers are a perfect fit; particularly for those doing a Concours d'Elegance restoration. Hozan & Vessel are the main two 'JIS' brands where my Hozan will hang in the screw head horizontally - hands free. TheOEM JIS’ screws are not soft and mushy, rather they have been destroyed by people inappropriately using a ‘Philips’ designed driver in a JIS screw head. The JIS screwdrivers are not too expensive and I’d recommend them for any Japanese bike workshop (professional or amateur).

Where you mentioned the filter screens for the needle seats (11:00), I’d also mention the seat O-Rings where I found my ZZR1100 flooding was caused by destroyed by the ethanol in E10 fuel.
