I was sold at that, but after seeing the simplicity of the game, I really think it would be a great addition to our library for newer players at our weekly meetup.
Well at first i was very sad cause i totally wanted a War of the Ring Review. Still do btw. But after this review i have learned of a new game that is now interesting enough where i would have probably skipped it otherwise.

Looks like a fun game and I would have loved playing it with my family. But SU&SD is completely right about the shipping. I'm not sure the game (plus one expansion) is a good value at $90 CAD, even before any duties or taxes (if dinged)!
I'm seriously hoping they find a good distributor and put the game up on Amazon at some point.

So, when is the review for War of the ring coming out?
If anybody in the UK wants cold, hard numbers, I just ordered the game from his website. $40 for the base game, $10 for the expansion, $20 for shipping.
So that's $70 in all, which is £52-ish at current rates.
Might end up being more if Mr import-tax man gets his fingers on it.
Anyway, 52 quid for a game + expansion is about the usual rate these days, so, yea, whatever. I went for it.
And £17.28 in import fees to pay as well. Bummer. Not entirely unexpected though.
To be fair, $70 for the full the experience of Doritos: Cool Oringal, is an absolute steal

Knowing how long it takes to set up War of the Ring, that first bit really hurt me in my soul. I can only imagine that part of Quinns' reaction to that was method acting, because even just for a sight gag watching all that work get deleted has got to sting lol.
That looks cool, but having it ship from the us kind of makes this a no-go for me and a lot of people I fear.

I find that Boss Monster is more popular in the States than it is in the UK.
In fact, it's so popular in southern USA that a group of Texans called Door Monster (ironic!) did a skit of Boss Monster on YT.

You say you prefer crunchier games, yet most of the games Shut up and Sit Down recommends are party games, basically the farthest from crunchier games as you can get. How does that work? I would love more recommended crunchier games!
The first board game I've ever played with my family that they've ever emphatically wanted to play again.

In the review you guys say it's a 2-4 player but on board game geek it says it's a 2-6?

I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed by this. As was my co-players.This is the new kickstarted version, but it looks very similar to what was shown here. What are we missing?

Now I have one wish for this gmes future divelopment: a partnership with Campighn Coin for some licensed replacments coins, because cardboard tokens like those always make me nervous and I'd raver have something a bit more futureproof.

I’ve been on the fence about boss monster for a couple of years now. On the one hand, I have a lot of friends who don’t normally play board games much who would love the theme, on the other hand, having played it myself, it just isn’t the game I desperately want it to be. This seems like an excellent alternative to consider.
Oh I know what you mean with Boss Monster. I've played it once and it was alright to begin with, but small text on cards leading to not knowing what your friends have in their dungeons leads to terrible times. The number of times I had this great plan only for someone across the table to go "No, you see, because of this room I've had all game I get to do this" and everything I'd built towards was ruined by not being able to read what was on the other side of the table. I still won, somehow, which also says a lot about it, I think.
It took me a second to recognize this game...I actually met the designer when we both shared the same hotel last Gen Con! Glad to see it's done so well to be sold out!

Did they just RECOMMEND a Kickstarter game?!?!?! Lol I backed this and have loved it so far. Very good at what it does - but it's really the art and design that sells it.
The second print of this is live on Kickstarter, plus an expansion, and I thought I'd give the video another go to see if I still wanted the game. Yes. Yes I do. Just those shop fronts that open up alone get me hot and bothered!
Bought this via the kickstarter. So far shocked this get such a nice review. The games seems almost 100% luck based when I played it with my mates. The optimal strategy being, buy no upgrades and pray for good cards.
So lets hope they are actually doing a War of the Ring review

after seeing this video when it came out, I immediately ran to get a copy to find that the first batch of printing was sold out - I then signed up for their mailing list, backed their kickstarter for the second batch of printing, and I finally received my copy of the game today! Can't wait to crack into it tomorrow

This game is great, however there is one rule I would change (that would also adress a lot of the criticism other people in this comment section have brought up). *At the end of the round, discard the item in your display instead of picking it back up.*
I'm not sure why this wasn't implemented in the base rules of the game, but it takes away so much of the luck and snowballing part of the game as you now have to think more carefully about what to display, and it prevents situations where one player who got the super item in the first round ends up having the first pick of heroes forever.

This was my first board game that I bought because of board gaming reviews. As someone new to the world, I wanted to try something simple and fun. Having just played two matches of this game with two other board game noobs, I have some thoughts:
1. Easy to learn, easy to calculate, with a surprising amount of scheming against opponents. The math is fun to do and easy enough that anyone can handle it. HOOOOOWEVER
2. This game is hopelessly unbalanced. Whoever gets an early lead is going to keep that lead the whole game, because some employees will give such major bonuses to the heroes. +1 may not seem like a lot, but when you factor it into all the crap you're selling them, it is likely to be the deciding factor between killing a monster or dying himself. You could house-rule those employees out of the deck, but it is still very hard for someone in the back to keep up, unless they are hoarding money like they're Scrooge McDuck. When you're behind, you have less money to spend and fewer options to grab.
3. There is an extraordinary amount of luck to this game, and that makes the strategy a lot less inconsequential than it seems at first. The adventure cards wound up ruining my sister when she got negative bonuses in literally every round of the last game, but the problem is a bit deeper than that. The luck applies to the cards you're drafting (if you wind up with four bad cards at the start, I pity you) and to the employees you can hire. There are the gamebreaking employees, but also others that give one-time bonuses that can be very handy... granted they flip over and you can actually use hire them, instead of getting stuck in the deck. If you wind up with two of the numerous employees who aren't much use, you're stuck upgrading. Which brings me to point 4:
4. Display upgrades are extremely useful, allowing you to get first or second choice of hero. Stock upgrades are pretty much useless unless you have a card that you DESPERATELY want to display, but they only work well in tandem with a good display anyway.
5. The monsters have abilities that are meant to balance the game by hurting the leader, but the effect tends to be pretty laughable. You just take the hit and move on.
I did quite enjoy this game, but it was ultimately a light amusement. We all liked it, we'll probably play it once or twice more... but I don't see this game being something that everybody wants to gather around and have a good time with. It does have a fun theme and goofy art, and there is more strategy involved than I expected. But it's still pretty fluffy, looking back on the experience.
I'd rate it 2.5/5? I mean, it's better than most of the old board games I have. I'm still enjoying the reviews and looking forward to buying more of these games. Crokinole, Whitehall Mystery, Arctic Scavengers, Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, Arboretum - They all look like they'd be pretty good. And then there are games with higher player counts like Avalon, but I don't have a large group to play with atm.

@@razorbeard1396 It's been some time and I'd like to re-evaluate it, as we have found it a great "fluff" game that everyone can enjoy without lots of deep strategy. The theming is a lot of fun and makes for entertaining storytelling, so that even your failures are something to laugh at. It's actually a VERY solid game with a lot of replay value, as it hits a sweet spot between strategy game and family game.

Does anyone know if this is a good/great 2 player game? I have friends, I swear, but I mostly end up playing 2 player.
Memoriesofwe Works well - when we got our copy from KS, we play tested it with just 2 players before presenting it to the rest of the gaming group. It also worked really well with 6 players, too.
Memoriesofwe, I have only played it 2 players, but after the first play, we play with the official two player variant from the rulebook in which you draw extra item cards and have 4 characters in town. I also removed all the take that cards from the various decks and it plays great with a lot of replayability. I did the KS for this and got the expansion too, so I'd recommend it for sure. Play the two player variant that adds more heroes, it actually plays very well and competitively.
Just as a heads up for anyone who's interested: There's currently a Kickstarter for a second printing and an expansion. For those of you who already got the game there's also an upgrade pack available.

I've never almost immediately bought a board game from one of your reviews, I don't have money. This might break that though as this game looks great! Partly it's this weird obsession I have for games that revolve around owning/managing an item shop (Primarily in Video game format, oh god, am I destined to be a retail worker forever send help) but also because the main people I play board games with aren't nearly as into the medium as me, so I have to get these lighter and softer games, and finding one that's legitimately good in its own right seems GREAT!
I also already have Sushi Go (not Party, again, didn't have money) so I think this may be an almost immediate purchase for me. Thanks!

Why don't they just publish this game? It's obviously very popular, and doesn't look particularly expensive. The Kickstarter just seems unnecessary and kind of manipulative.

I have never disagreed so heavily with you guys. Long ago, this review got me so hyped, and I went all-in on the KS for the Black Market expansion, getting the core and everything they put out. I was so excited for it to arrive! Hoo boy....I have NEVER had a game flop so hard with my gaming group. We unanimously hated Bargain Quest. It was like a wet blanket thrown over the gaming table. There was just too much randomness, it felt like nothing we did actually mattered when those last-minute arbitrary +/- cards come out before battle. With the random drafting of goods, we never felt like we had any real control over the game, just kind of did what little we could with whatever happened to land in our laps. We tried three times, with and without expansions, and decided we never wanted to play it again.
The expansion "sunk costs" addresses your issue of lack of control in the game. Players now place cards onto ships face up and can choose which set of cards (ship) they want. Also the +/- cards dealt before the adventure are optional as per the rulebook.
I held off on my impulse-buying habit for a day, only to come back the next day and see the game had just instantly sold out. Damn you, self-control! if I didn't have you, I'd have a copy of Bargain Quest on the way

From US to AUS as at 19/05/2018 the exchange is $93 - $100 for the Deluxe plus shipping. Its got to be worth it right?
There's another game coming out with a very similar premise called Heroes Welcome, where you're running a shop selling gear to adventurers. Don't know which is the better game, and Heroes Welcome isn't out till next year, but it's just a bit weird they should come out at about the same time. I suppose it gives you another choice if you like shopkeep games though.
After watching a playthrough Bargain Quest seems to have very little control over strategy and winning is more up to chance. It's random luck what cards you draw, what heros come to your shop, and their special ability you draw before they fight the enemy. There's some control in what items you decide to sell them and what upgrades you get for your shop. I love the art, cute shop setup, the opening of the shop, and the entire idea. I think it would be really fun. But the luck aspect might get boring after a couple plays. Do you find this as well or is there more strategy that I am missing?
Funny that you mention Boss Monster bc I bought it, wow, about 3 years ago and the expansion. And within two games of playing, my roommate and I found a way to break the game lol. It was fun tho, haven't played it since, but it was fun while it lasted lol

This game sounds like one big board-game version of "Recettear", a game made by a small Indie Japanese team in 2007
