I remember this game in December 6 or 7th 1968. I watch it from the Hibbing MN hospital. Had my appendix removed the Thursday. My friend Eric Norri, number 72 from Virginia MN. There a painting on a side of building of sports people & # 72 is there.
ND had a simple game plan on defense: instead of going after Simpson, they waited for him. They figured most of Simpson's runs were improvised as a result of defenses trying to penetrate to stop him. It worked - OJ was held to a mere 55 yards rushing.
I think they also brought about 7 men close to the line of scrimmage, which also cut off the running lanes. It's only when USC started throwing the ball did they actually start doing something.
Durko played five seasons with the Bengals and Patriots. A starter but not a star. George Kunz played 12 seasons for Atlanta and the Colts. That's a nice career
Whether Theismann was a better QB at South Bend than Hanratty is up for debate but he obviously was the more decorated pro. Not sure why the Steelers kept him on the roster for so long.
No bowl game for the Irish in 1968; faced Texas in the Cotton Bowls following the '69 and '70 seasons. USC would go on to lose to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on Jan, 1st, 1969. Yes...the Big 10 did occasionally triumph in the Rose Bowl.
Big Ten in Rose Bowls, when it was exclusively the Big Ten against the PCC/AAWU/Pac-8/10: 1947-1959: 12-1 1960-1969: 5-5 1970-1987: 2-16 1988-2001: 9-5 Total: 28-27
@@nathaniellathy6559After winning 11 of 12 in the Rose Bowl, the Big Ten and Pacific Coast went 5-5 over the next 10 years. The Rose Bowl win by the Buckeyes was the 5th in 10 years for the Big Ten. Over the next 18 years, the Big Ten only won 2 times(Ohio State in 74, Michigan in 81).
I remember this game like it was yesterday. USC was ranked #1 and I think the Irish were ranked #3. It seems like the score was 7-7. then the score was 21-7 with Notre Dame leading. It seems like on the last USC touchdown that it was a long pass down the field. It's been 50 years or so since I've seen this game so I'm giong strictly on memory.
Thank you for posting this! Great historical document!

Didn't OJ run wild in an SC win in South Bend in 67, or is my memory failing me?
@@CPSJSMSUUMUGA YES UR CORRECT!
I can think of at least three players in this game who went on to stellar careers in the NFL -- Joe Theisman, OJ Simpson and Bob Chandler. Any others?
Mike Holmgren. :-)
Bob Kuechenberg. Playing defense here!
Durko played five seasons with the Bengals and Patriots. A starter but not a star. George Kunz played 12 seasons for Atlanta and the Colts. That's a nice career
Bob Klein TE for SC
Bob Kuechenberg played both ways on the offensive and defensive lines in that his game. Then went on to a stellar 16-year NFL career.

50s and 60s Big 10 did well in Rose. Not well in 70s and 80s where triumphs really were occasional.90s welcome change for Big Ten

USC's hero of the day was Sam Dickerson.

Final score was 21-21 tie

Do you not what a "spoiler" is? Well you are one, and that's not a complement.
