    "Announcing that your commissions are open is like screaming into the void" is so relateable. I've had great commission experiences but they're few and far between. I'd love to do them but most of my followers are either children or other artists and not really in the buying market :/

    Very good pieces of advice. Commissions ARE exhausting. Luckily, I pick the type of commissions that I like, but it is no surprise that I often spend twice as much time as initially planned on those paintings. More often than not, and even despite a detailed brief before starting, the customer will ask several iterations. It is difficult to know what the customer has in mind... especially when (s)he is not sure herself!
    My advice for commissions is:
    1) do your research and target the people and companies whom you know will be interested in the style you love; this will help you go through the unexpected bumps on the roads more easily ;
    2) Meet your customer in person (if possible) or at least make sure you have 45 min to 1 hour of her dedicated time for a very detailed brief during which you will cover :
    i) Her objectives,
    ii) her target audience,
    iii) style, mood and ambiance ;
    iv) the elements to be present in the painting (all of them)
    v) what she absolutely does not want, pitfalls to avoid;
    5) Agree in advance on a maximum number of iterations (to avoid the customer always asks you more changes). For example, 2 is reasonable ;
    6) Make a rough first sketch and send for validation : it is IMPORTANT since you do not want to start over after you finished everything. The sketch should show all the elements discussed and their placement in the painting. Make sure you have a written commitment after this ; Do not work further otherwise.
    7) Work your ass off on the commission
    8) Optional: send a final black and white version for additional adjustments ;
    9) Send the final version with colors and textures.
    Finally, about payment. It's up to you but I strongly advise to not accept being paid only in the end, otherwise you may invest a lot of time in the artwork but end up to be the 'hostage' of your own client.
    At least, be paid 50% at the order (after the brief) and 50% just after you send a digital copy (not at high definition) of the final work. Like this, you know your customer is serious and, in case you are not paid the remaining 50%, you still can keep the final HD file. If you can, being paid 100% in advance is of course better. 😀

    My first 'commission' was around 9 years ago. It was for my friend just to see my skill. It was just for 5 bucks and I ended up giving the drawing for free because it's so terrible.
    Up 'til now, it still haunts me and I made a promise to myself to actually give her an actual improved art... someday.

    This is exactly how I feel about commissions. I make them all the time for the money, and although I'm good at it, I always feel like dying through the process, and every time I wish I didn't start this whole thing from the beginning. So it was nice to hear this from you, and really encouraging to stop doing it and start making what I really like yo do!

  • @OwnyOne
    @OwnyOne 2 роки тому +19

    For just 10 bucks and with no time to really improve the drawing I think it probably would have been a good commission. I mean, if people want something more "professional" looking they should pay more or *at the very least* notify with more time. I think that many people as clients do have to understand some things about this type of work. Drawings don't just get done first try in an hour of work, and if they do, the artist is so good that their prices should be very high.

    • @earisu
      @earisu 2 роки тому +2

      I was going to say this. Did he leave the drawing until the last minute (unlikely, but possible) or did they commission him late?

    • @LucasPeinador
      @LucasPeinador  2 роки тому +4

      oh... on their defense, just like earisu says, I left it to the last moment. If I would have started before I would have been able to correct the drawing. It was completely on me :(

    También eh visto videos de otros artistas sobre las comisiones y al parecer lidiar con clientes problemáticos es lo que lo hace más estresante, pude notar que eres de costa rica, así que decidi escribir en español, saludos y gracias por los consejos

      @LucasPeinador  2 роки тому +1

      Hola Juan! haha gracias por escribirme en español, sí, soy de Costa Rica :). Cierto, lo peor de las comisiones son los clientes, si te toca uno bueno, la comisión es súper fácil, pero si te toca uno de los malos, te hacen la vida imposible. Lo que he notado es que entre más baratas las comisiones, más problemáticos los clientes...

    My friend slugz actually only charges 1 to 10$ to 15 I've never really asked for a bigger project than so.. we became somewhat acquaintance's when they sold me a monkey furry and I'm obsessed with monkey lol.
    I bought the character from them for $5.. I even ended up getting a full body Commission of the character themselves only humanoid... For $5 more... Ended up getting an icon for $4...and recently got a full body of My Pokemon character and two icons of him for no less then 3$..1$ each .. now they're doing a full on mini red sheet of a new custom character I asked them to make for literally $10.
    They didn't want me spending the $10 fully on them and they only asked if I was sure once... I told him I didn't lie I didn't know exactly how to do this... I've only used dirt-poor Amino coin and deviantART.. they understood perfectly... But I always felt like I wasn't giving them enough for what they were offering especially when it was a fully colored thing... IDK I feel like a dummy.

    Man, most of the time I HATE commissions. I never liked to respond to anyone. The main problem in my case is that I have no idea of what I want to draw nor do with my art. I guess, I feel like nobody's gonna like what I like to draw. I've been feeling pressure to draw Fanart of whatever series, cartoon or anime is popular and I only do so when I really really like it otherwise is a dead end. However, I still draw some Fanart here and there just to idk to make my smol pebble turn into a gem for a few seconds.

    • @LucasPeinador
      @LucasPeinador  2 роки тому +1

      Hahaha ciertamente, hay que empezar en algún lugar. Por eso mismo empecé con las comisiones yo también, pero creo que si hubiera sabido lo que sé ahora, me hubiera dedicado a mejorar mis skills (fundamentos, anatomía, construcción, quizás hacer mis propias ilustraciones) en lugar de empezar con comisiones tan temprano en mi carrera. Creo que es mejor para tu crecimiento... Por supuesto, si no necesitas el dinero urgentemente

    Oh, Gods! THat is why I don't want to take any commissions anymore! + I think Lucas didnt mentioned, that sometimes commissioners, even for the very very cheap commissions are very picky and asking about millions of corrections and fixes and additions. For the beginner artist it might be difficult to say No to commissioner or ask for extra money for the each correctios. LIke they paid you 20 USD and the artist will work for week without extra payment from such a commissioner just to make everyting perfect to him. Oh, Gods.

  • @timkongart

    Ah yes Im currantly caught in this rut, I don't think doing art commissions are bad per se as I've been doing them for the last 2-3 years and I've been lucky that the commissions are decently paid compared to most people and subject matter is not too far off from what i like (DnD). However I think some people are more suited it from other. I myself got really burnt out after doing them 2 years straight with no break. Whilst decently paid my commission works aren't exactly fast to do and a lack of personal work just got me lost in pumping out other peoples ideas. I think if you're someone who can do your work very quickly and enjoy taking on many ideas and drawing them its not a bad way to get some income.
    However, as a general business i think its a good idea to have some form of passive income too so that you don't have live off commission to commission or as Lucas said above try to get works from companies that can pay you a livable wage.
