  • It's been over a year and a half since we installed the new Universal Series heat pump AC units from MRCOOL. Now that we finally received our certificate of occupancy we can have the permanent power connected and officially startup and test these 20 SEER inverter driven systems... and move into the house!

    I think you will be impressed with the systems. Switching from conventional heat pumps to inverter heat pumps took $200 per month off my electric bill. With your insulation, you could make your place a refrigerator. You could add hideaway blinds for the west facing windows.

    Put a MrCool mini split in my bedroom a few months ago. Greatest thing I have ever done. Im a super light sleeper so a window unit would not work for me, but I can not hear when Mrcool is running and it cools the room in just minutes.

    As an HVAC contractor, I can vouch for these as well. We've only helped verbally with instructions when someone was confused about the directions. Never had to install one. There are reasons why you pull the lines like you should and set things according to specs, so though DIY, it is important to stay within the limit of those specs. Awesome system though. The casa being what it is - is the best!! Two cool thumbs up for you!! Enjoy!! Smiles and blessings...

      How do these qualify for the warranty if you "do it yourself"? Don't they specifically say "must be installed by an hvac professional"?

    • @hisimagenme
      @hisimagenme 2 роки тому +1

      @@CountryLivingExperience not all of them do, no. As a residential owner, you can not buy a HVAC system and install it without a permit. Which will require an inspector to check it before you can power it on. Only certified technicians can purchase (the system gets cheated - yes). These anyone can buy and install... you must follow instructions and if something goes wrong... it's on you. No homeowners insurance will cover damages or loss of life due to carbon monoxide in a DIY furnace install, or freon poison from a DIY cooling system install, unless you show proof of permit/inspection. This is why you keep these thing in the initial purchase of a home. As Jeremy pointed out, all the freon work was done on these, designed to not need the tech to vacuum and balance the system. So these companies putting these out are saying it's safe for anyone to install since just anyone can purchase and install, they always recommend procedures and inspections. I believe they state they won't cover any warranty without one. I've known several people who pulled permits, installed themselves and were inspected - passed and all is well. The design of these are truly the next step and even as an HVAC tech and installer, I take my hat off. The industry can over charge insanely... and why not if you want to do the work and take on part of liability. It helps people help the truly needy by simply following the steps, permitting and inspection - and they can give the cost of labor. We have done this with certified only purchased units... we always permitted and got our work inspected. Thus guaranteed our work for 5 years. We only installed 10 year guaranteed units... which is a good " lifetime" of any of them, some last longer given the best maintenance, but if you do nothing but use them hard that's about what you can expect. I say this given my work in the different states, each state is different.

    Outstanding video and very informative. I just put a heat pump in my pole barn. It has minimal insulation in the walls of Aprox R5 to 6 and the overhead is Aprox R 15 to 16. It was an easy install and I’m slowly insulating all the gaps with spray foam trying to make it as airtight as it can be. I’m hoping that it’s relatively inexpensive to run so I can work there in the summer.

    I live in the desert where summer temps are 110 degrees. Could not keep temp constant in My old (34 yrs) 2 story wood frame house. Summer bills $500. I had the house painted white, put in new windows & doors, put in real wood shutters (white) on the windows. Have ceiling fans. Did not change out the 34yo cent AC/heat unit. House stays cool till 8pm, i run the whole house fan if outside temp is cool. If not, use ceiling fans. Finally if that doesnt do it, run the AC. AVG electric bill now is $100m & Gas is $40. My home is 3000 sq ft. To those of you who live where elec is high per kwh (ie Calif) Improve the structure before changing out your unit.

    We have large windows similar to yours in our cabin. Last summer we had a UV film installed on them. It made a huge difference in the temperature. It is a very clear 3M film so while there is a slight tint I don’t even notice it anymore. The other benefit is over time the sunlight bleached the floors and walls. So you can see where there was an area rug and where pictures used to be on the wall. The UV film is supposed to stop that as well. Can’t rate it high enough. Great product. A lot of products on the market so pick one that fits the budget.

    I'm in the middle of doing their 4-5 ton unit install. I have a few suggestions. I'd add some Intermatic AG3000 surge protectors to each condenser unit. Also, you're breakers are 50 Amp which I'm pretty sure it too large. My 4-5 ton unit calls for 45 amps MAX.
    Their directions are horrible as you mentioned!! Lack of many details such as the recommended filter size if placing directly into the air handler, breaker requirements. disassembly of the air handler if required to placing in the attic or making it light enough to lift and what you pointed out with T-stat wiring. The hardware itself is great though. I removed a 19 year old Trane unit and everything about the MrCool feels more robust than the Trane did.

      Condensation would only occur on the condenser unit (outside) if you are using it as a heat pump and you are running it in heating mode. The condensation occurs on the evaporator (inside) during cooling. This effect is the same as when you leave a cup full of ice and water condenses on the outside of the cup. The condenser outside will be hot during cooling and not have condensation.
