A lot of people tried to copy the G3 receiver, because it was stamped sheet metal. Not many succeeded at it, though. You'd think it's hard to screw that up; but you'd be wrong. To this day that rifle is still in service in many parts of the world, and is my favorite rifle ever. It's also my father's favorite rifle.
Funny you should call it a 'rifle'. Like the 'Matel 16' is was 'different'. The M-60 is a 'mutt' machine gun that 'borrow's from 3 or 4 different designs. There wasn't a lot of thought put into it. We would have been better off buying the MG-4259 after WW2. We would still be using it today. The M-60 I First got was fresh out of the Crate in the late 80's. It was a very tempermental weapon. I had to get into tremendous physical shape to keep up with the Riflemen. Many times, it really was a 'unique' rifle.
A truly effective firearm. 7.62 mm punch, high rate of fire and relatively good accuracy for a machine gun. Yes, it was heavy and the ammo heavy. I had a horrible incident in Vietnam, however, when we took over a perimeter tower during the "Cambodian Incursion." Whichever unit deployed they left us with a defective machine gun. The gas cylinder system had a leak and would only fire 1 round and not cycle the next round into battery. We discovered this defect during an enemy ground attack.
@@wightclaudia Devine and I opened fire with our M-16's. The OG called for a "mad minute" in our sector, which meant all towers & bunkers sweep their fields of fire for about a minute. @@hairydogstail All we were told is the M-60 was in the armory when they unit was sent to Cambodia. They grabbed a non-op for whoever took over their Tower and took a good one. @@donalddodson7365 I hear you. It was easy to insert the gas piston backwards, which was a failing of the early design. @@peterson7082its not m1 gas operation they are VERY different. Only common thing is both are long stroke piston , other than that gas system is completely different. G3's are a bitch to take apart; but in my experience, the good thing about them is that you don't have to do that very often. Most reliable guns I've ever shot. I've never had one jam on me, and I've fed them all kinds of ammo, from Sierra Match Grade to surplus NATO rounds, to reloads. You might have had a bum receiver. There were a lot of those going around about 15 years ago.
Are you shitting me? The M60 does not hold a candle to the MG42, or the G3 machine gun variants; but it is a solid gun. The SEAL's still use it even now.
I was a 60 gunner with the 82nd Abn. Loved to shoot it, hated to hump it. We would open the top cover of the weapon up to load it. A little different in methodology. All good.
That would explain why the ejection port is right above the trigger grip...which would make the M60 lefty-incompatible outside of bipod and tripod use. o.o
they lowered the rpm rate to 15 per second in the m-60 to save ammow.they still use the browing 50 cal but not 30? wonder why? bet there r still some around.
Search in UA-cam Glowing M60 Barrel. That's one belt. In actual combat you don't do that to your machine gun; usually it's two belts before you need to change it; but damn!
In theory, the gun requires two people to operate: a loader and a shooter. But very often in practice, when one of them gets shot, the other pretty much does it all alone!
@Lockbar During the Battle of the Bulge tank forces of Patton advancing on Nazi positions, a tanker discovered his tank mounted (on top of the turret) machine gun had frozen, so he pissed on it, causing it unfreeze and allowed him to fire the machine gun.
We had the G3 and it is not that reliable, used to jam after 6 to 8 rounds and if NOT on a tripod the bullet pattern was all over the place. M-60's were quite accurate just on a bipod.
On an M-60, if you fire 100 rounds within a minute, you have to change the barrel. 7.62 Nato, aka 7.62 Winchester aka 7.62x51 is a pretty hot round. Metal conducts heat like it's going out of style. I've talked to more m-60 gunners than you, apparently, because they have all told me that either they managed to scrounge up an asbestos glove, or they wished they had. And the vid has more cuts than a suicide girl. It's an instructional vid. For illustrative purposes.
Ft carson colo. after 11 hundred men sp/4 trevino placed 2nd place qualifaction not compation.sp/4 keo won 1st place he carries the m60 congratulations sp/4keo .1/11 inf (m)
The original M60's came with a spare barrell, and an asbestos glove. They had a handle for the barrels later, so you didn't need a two man crew to man the pig.
What they show in the vid about changing the barrel by grabbing the bipod is fake. Metal conducts heat way too much for that. I've never fired a machine gun; but I've studied them a lot, and I've watched people fire them. A steady burst of beltfed lead can get a barrell red hot very quickly.
Reply to Justin M: "Organic Bipod" here just means that the bipod is part of the gun and not an add-on. How'd you like to do Present Arms with this fucker?!
The best solution for those is to just not buy them. I had a guy try to sell me an HK33 that had plastic piccatini rails. What the fuck am I going to do with that? Not buy it. That's what I do with shit not worth buying.
Caveat emptor. Buyer beware. You didn't shoot the gun before you bought it, and I bet my eyeteeth you sold it to somebody that made the same mistake. At least that's what I would have done. Lol. Except that I would have shot the gun first and not get conned to beggin with.

M-60 is based on the FG-42 paratrooper weapon design with MG-42 belt feed system adapted to it.
hulk78301 and they made one awesome gun out of it!
And the _M1_ gas operation, and several _Lewis_ elements in both gas operation and locking mechanism.
The FG-42 is based off the Lewis gun..

Love these original military training videos!
hippies and vegans should love this weapon... it has an Organic Bi-pod! the narrator told me so xP
that giant replica of the M-60 is cool!
I’m telling ya. The military still needs to use this beauty. Along the ‘240.
Navy Seals still use it to this day

Yep, I knew that - but I'd still rather have the 42. I really like the higher rate-of-fire, tho I couldn't afford to feed it...very often.

Nice. Do you have a video for the m249?
@awalwang yes actually there is.

Actually the M-60 was based off the MG-42. The 42 set the stage for most modern machine guns
in practice you couldnt change the barrel b/c it is too warm?
You used a mit to change hot barrels
r those bullets for the enlarged 1 real?
I had to carry that monster through a 2 hour Pass and Review at port arms. Good times.
Thats brutal! Change of command ceremonies in 29 palms were bad enough with carbines
2 hours with a 35lbs gun....damn.
I'd like to own the demo rifle!
Best. Grandfather. EVER!
Did AP ammo back then have a Steel Core? Or how did they make AP ammo back then? Has it changed?
hello from the future. M61 AP ammo (which would have been the most common round issued for the M60) had a steel/lead core
what is the scale of this thing? I now the m60 is big but it cant be that big is it?
Where was his asbestos barrel glove?
do you know that the americans captured the mg34 machine gun and then later customized and became known as the m60

Anyone notice neither the gunner or AG are not wearing any hearing protection. My ears are still ringing 40 years later

It can be fired from the hip, if you want to be a complete badass

me gusta
@LYNCHIE1011 ok so they r just use for deminstration

Its a lot like the german mp34
the design of the m60 copies the design of the mg42
