Gen Z Refuses The Military Draft

  • After an AI video of Joe Biden enacting the military draft went viral, a greater conversation began about how a draft would look for our generation today. Gen Z has made it clear that they'll refuse the draft at all costs, including the liberals who support foreign interventions. Even the feminists online have backpedaled on their stances when the draft is brought up. What would ultimately happen to this generation if the government tried to enact the draft?

I served 6 years with 2 tours in Iraq. I agree with what your saying. But it really comes down to this. We either fight for what we have “though imperfect” or we see what happens if we don’t. I don’t think we will like the latter of the 2 options.

I served for 20 years in the Air Force and am at least the 3rd, if not 4th generation of my family to serve in the military. I will do everything I can to dissuade my son from serving because our country has broken trust with our military. Ever since Nixon eliminated the draft, the number of lawmakers who either served themselves or at least had family members who served has steadily diminished. We now have a caste of policy makers who have no connection to the caste of soldiers who are sent to fight foreign wars and have no skin in the game. They commit our blood and treasure with no remorse because they will never suffer the consequences.

I mean, if a draft is genuinely needed and we don’t answer, then any country with a motivated leader like Stalin or hitler would come and bomb the world into submission and we wouldn’t be able to do anything because nobody even went to the army to be trained with a firearm and battle situations. Every continent except probably Africa, and Asia would be under dictatorship

A draft is the worst idea in the world. I am a 54-year-old vet. I was in when many of the Vietnam vets were senior officers and NCOs. The Vietnam War showed how the draft was counterproductive to the success of the military. They can offer incentives to volunteer, like sign-on bonuses, and get a much higher quality of recruit.

Thank you for your service. I am also 54. When I was a child I noticed none of the teachers would discuss the Vietnam War in secondary school. Ironically, it made me tremendously curious. So, I started reading books about it. The first I read was "Nam" by Mark Baker. If one wants to read first-hand accounts about problems with the draft and issues in military combat - that definitely is a good one to read. One of the narrators talked about how some of the "grunts" were drafted in such a way that they either had to go to jail or join the military as ordered by a judge for some crime they committed. Another Veteran narrated about his issues with extreme illness that he blamed on his exposure to Agent Orange. That ultimately led to my research on chemical defoliants for public health in graduate school. Over decades, I read many books, scientific journals, periodicals, articles, etc. I spoke to Vietnam Veterans out in the construction labor sites or when I worked with BIA Forestry. Some of them were suffering from PTSD into late middle age.
I know the draft ended and led to the "All-Volunteer" force for my Generation X of the 1980s. In 1986, my HS football team of rural AZ went to Miramar Naval Base for a 3-day football camp. The whole team was excited because the movie "Top Gun" had come out that summer and was wildly popular among 1980s teens. A lot of us also had older relatives who had served in the US Navy or USMC during WWII or Vietnam or Korea. We were excited to see the naval base. After morning practice, we toured the base, the naval ships, and the USMC boot camp near the San Diego airport. I saw the training where the marines had to traverse by hand on a cable high up over a moat. I'll never forget the unflinching "stand-at-attention" of the marines waiting their turn while the guys traversing were high up with tests on upper body strength. They recruited many of us, and some marines spoke to us individually. I told them I was going to Notre Dame from which I later graduated.
But I had some teammates join the USMC. One of them died during the buildup to the first Persian Gulf War in 1991 in Saudi Arabia. The small, rural community of AZ was in deep shock and mourning over that. The USMC chopper flew his body back to the Apache Reservation and landed it near his home by a rodeo ground. Years later, I had a dream about Mike in his USMC uniform. He was standing in his house and his spirit went through the rooms while his surviving parents and sister slept and said "I want to see my family". I woke up in agony. RIP Mike Noline - USMC Semper Fi (Class of 1988).
War can be hell. I hope there isn't another worldwide conflict that necessitates a draft. Despite all the negative accolades, I think there is one area where Generation Z can excel in modern combat - cyber warfare via the internet, cyberhacking, cybsersurveillance, jamming, hacking hardware/software systems like satellites, flight recorders from downed aircraft, etc. Generation Z is very tech savvy.

That isn't the intent when sending soldiers to fight at all. You don't send them to die, you send them to defeat the enemy. You have to take the risk in knowing some of your men will die, but that is not the goal.
To facilitate that, soldiers need to be trained and equipped beyond their competition, given valuable intelligence about what they're walking into, and given a clear goal in mind as to what they need to do. It's in those needs that militaries have failed.
That said, what the American military needs is people who WANT to be there, not those forced against their will. It also needs to rebuild the people's trust by having more effectual leaders behind it.
We don't need to fight every war, and we don't need to fight for resources. We need to fight to defend, something the military hasn't done in a long while.

@@OlympusPublicAffairs I agree in part. I don't think anyone has ever gone to war intending to lose
However, when it comes to soldiers, I think there is a well established practice of having a large group less well trained soldiers (or even completely untrained soldiers or conscripts) present on the field to draw the enemy's attention while your better prepared, more professional troops do the heavy lifting. I believe it was Napoleon who invented the term 'cannon fodder', or at least it was invented in his day.

There was a story that went around the military base (Campbell) from before my husband was serving about a disheveled man who came out of the woods and walked up to the gate in the mid-2000s.
He put his arms up and said “I surrender! I’m sorry. I can’t do it anymore”
The gate guards were obviously confused. They asked him if he needed psychiatric services.
No! He was a man who was formally drafted for Vietnam and had been hiding in the woods for 30 years and was tired of it.
The military didn’t arrest him. They were impressed and gave him the help and services he needed. They told him the war was over a long time ago and that he would be taken care of. Poor man.

Our politicians have made a joke of our military now after taking advantage of our patriotism to wreak havoc on the world with our Industrial WAR Machine called Military contracting profits. I wanted to fight terrorists, I did. I wanted to defend our country and keep it safe. But when profits are what makes decisions? We have a big freakin foul. I would NOT join the Military today nor would I let my family join or serve. Let the draft come back. Let the woke go fight, bleed and die. I’m from the UK and let me tell you why I wouldn’t go overseas for my country.
    1) lack of promises fulfilled by the government every single time
    2) mass migration diluting our culture and blatantly being ignored
    3) taking down our UK flags for the gay flag
    4) what the army did to the boys who took a photo with Tommy Robinson who is infamous for critiquing the government of allowing young fighting aged men from the Middle East in mass to our country
    5) the amount of tax tax tax the government robs us for
I love my people and I would fight to defend our homeland but no way am I going overseas to die or kill other people for my government. Our culture has been diluted and shamed. The government doesn’t help those in need ie elderly and disabled nearly enough, we are taxed for everything if you decide to get off your own back and try to work for a better living and the famous NHS is neglected and the private health sector in the uk isn’t as available as elsewhere, the nurses and doctors are honestly the best and most giving people you will meet but the big bosses are too greedy and the NHS doesn’t get enough people to keep it functioning, I’ve been waiting to have a wisdom tooth taken out for almost a year because it isn’t hurting me actively.
So why should I fight for my country who sponsor the bbc heavily who claim to hate white straight men? Get the immigrants and gays to go fight your wars, shoot me or put me in a prison because I won’t hurt nobody for my government only the people I love.

It's funny because when I was 19-20, i also lived in a privileged time. I had never seen an attack on American soil. No one had since Pearl Harbor. Then 9/11 hit. I have a physical disability that disqualified me for duty or i would've ran and joined. I had friends who had no idea what they were going to do with their adult life when it happened. Now, 25 years later, many went on to have successful careers in the military and others used their service to build a great civilian life for themselves afterwards. I think many forget that when you join, youre tested for where you will fit in best. You may not ever carry a gun. You could end up a cook, paper pusher, or even a jet mechanic. Trust me, the government is mot going to put a gun in the hands of someone who will run the minute they're on the battlefield.

There’s people from previous generations saying that for us to resist a draft is selfish and “back in the day our boys would’ve fought”. Yeah? Well back in the day we didn’t know what we know now. We didn’t know that our Government is run by sick sadistic pedophiles that want nothing more than total control of everything. think the new generation has been taught alot about "previous mistakes" such as world wars and "stolen generations".

But then in todays age, all of a sudden it can just switch up and we are expected to.... To what? From what we have been taught.... Its to repeat the mistakes of a previous generation.
Its kind of understandable why people are against it.
If the older generations wanted strong soilders in the future, they should have lied about the wars.
But instead they gave us the harsh reality and showed us the trauma and pain that war causes.
And then expect those people to grow up all ready and happy to go to war.

I doubt Brett will ever see this, but I have to tell you all as a veteran of the Iraq war, I'm so insanely disappointed in the younger generation. I was born in the 80s, and served in OIF in 2008. Our tour was nothing more than any other, but everyone made it back, then all of my friends started killing their selves and hurting their selves en-masse. The things we saw aren't possible to "get over" and I still have nightmares to this day at 35. It's like gears grinding in opposite ways in my head, like shards of glass in the brain. I was very young there and I followed my families tradition of answering the call, but I had no idea what war was when I enlisted at 17.
I learned very quickly and the military made me a man and a severe alcoholic, both rather quickly. What happens in war isn't just the chaotic death of your friends and loved ones, it stays with you FOREVER. And it hurts, every single day. War will always exist, but whoever you are, please in Gods name dont send your children to war. Please dont, for whoever they are or may be, I BEG you dont put them through the "meat grinder" that we saw. It's pointless and you're gifting them nothing but a lifetime of extremely severe trauma. I cant speak for ever veteran but I will speak as an infantry soldier.
I am outdated, I am "obsolete" now with a broken body and mind by military standards, which often makes me wonder why I survived it in the first place. But at least I can be a testament to what war is. A notion of "don't be this thing" for future generations. And maybe that is a purpose. But I say again and BEG whoever you are:
In GODS name, PLEASE don't send your children to war. You will never see your child again, even when/if they return home.

When you think of drafting women, think of how women entered the workforce during the WWII to work in factories and take over jobs left open by the men who went off to war. For example, the Army is only 1/3rd combat oriented and the remaining 2/3rds are support roles for combat units. therefore, if women get drafted they will first fill non-combat roles, so that more men can be placed in combat roles first. So a male soldier who works in admin jobs, will be replaced by a women and he will be sent to the frontline. So women will not purposely be sent to combat, they will be , as we would say, "in the rear with the gear."

They wouldn't need to enforce it to the point they find and get everyone to join. This is not new. This same sentiment was popular in the 1960s; a time when civil disobedience was not new and was known to be effective. Also, back then the government could not find you via your smartphone and people actually used cash for most transactions. It is one thing to talk about how one would rather go to jail or flee to Canada. It is quite another to actually do it. Most will talk a big game, but most will also just have to go. It is what it is. I already served my 20 years and retired. So, I'm just watching this unfold now. I hope we do not need to draft anyone as I truly believe that this population of young people is relatively mentally and physically weak and will be unable to survive any battlefield for too long. But it can happen, and if it does, a lot of people who do not want to go will be made to go. Again, I hope it does not because we are going to lose a whole generation of young people.

I had been employed as a mechanic but those damn tech schools were churning out mechanics who weren't good or experienced but they had ASE certification through the school and they were willing to work cheap so my job prospects were less than stellar. Ronald Reagan had just given what was for the time a huge raise to the military. I was fed, housed clothed and I had $550 cash in my pocket to spend however I like every month. I know people today who don't have $550 in inflated dollars a month in discretionary spending. I once had a locker inspection where they knew something was wrong but they couldn't place what. My sergeant told them you won't find anything, he doesn't have anything the Army didn't give him. I had discipline before the Army, the Army honed it to a finer edge. I'm pretty damn wealthy now and I would give a lot to have those years and some of the damage I took back. The Army will NOT make a man out of you, if you were a man, it might make you a better man.
