    I always loved Code: Veronica in my own way, but there was also something about it that made it my least favorite "classic-style" RE game. After watching this, I understand why I felt that way about it and why it was always difficult for me to come back to it in comparison to the others, even those of the action trilogy. Still, I love playing the game, especially because of these things:
    - The ability to play as Chris and Claire again, and in the same game, is pretty awesome. I have owned the PS2 version as a kid, so playing this game with classic controls was a big plus for me.
    - You can play as Wesker in the Battle Game, this game's mini-game.
    - The knife is extremely fun to use in this game.
    - Obtaining the rocket launcher in this game (the infinite one) is actually a very difficult challenge and one that I've never been up to doing myself.
    - This game has the dumbest, most dramatic story in the series, and that makes it extremely appealing to me.
    Thanks, also, TGB, for staying authentic and playing the original DC release for this video!

      I'm sure I will one day :) Learning how to speedrun and master each game is one of the most amazing feelings in gaming to me, and doing that with Code: Veronica will surely be just as awesome, even if it takes insane work.
      I've owned the strategy guide for Code: Veronica X since I was little. It was passed down from my father. As a kid, I couldn't beat Code: Veronica despite having no trouble playing RE1 and RE2 (which were also my father's games) and the fact that my dad owned the strategy guide only for C:V sort of created this legend that Code: Veronica was unwinnable or something. It was the Prima guide, and reading the requirements for getting an A rank was like, "Well, I guess that's not happening!" It wouldn't be until my teenagehood that I was able to beat it alone without the guide, but maybe one day I'll be able to get an A rank.

      Channel: NES1995 As someone that managed to unlock the rocket launcher for Code: Veronica X, the first and only time in any classic RE game, it was...honestly, pretty underwhelming compared to what I had to do to get it.
      Memorizing the majority of puzzles and difficult enemy locations, avoiding zombies and unnecessary encounters as best as I could (Which is kinda easy for zombies since I recall it being really easy to break out of most zombie grabs before losing health, anyways), accumulating as much rare ammo and weapons as I could to the point of using only the knife to kill the Nosferatu-looking monster (Which is somehow doable if you manage to stab it right a certain way), all to get a Rocket Launcher that I only ever used on a few zombies.
      I mean, I had some fun with the game, but completion just wasn’t worth it in hindsight.

      @@bakerdoze To be fair, I would argue getting the infinite rocket launcher is never really worth it in terms of gameplay. To me, it is worth the journey it takes to get there, as well as the added bonus of being able to say "Hey, I feel like speedrunning Resident Evil *blank* today!" and actually being able to do it xD Having the infinite rocket launcher is a lot of fun in 4 and 5, though. I think it's no surprise that when Code Veronica came out that reviews for it were talking about "Resident Evil fatigue" that gave so much hype and energy to the RE4 pre-release coverage for not having normal zombies, not having fixed camera angles, etc. It's crazy to think it, but only 5ish years into the IP's lifespan and people were already tiring of it (and now here we are with 7 people wanting to go back to basics). IDK how many of the watchers here can remember those early days, but I certainly do.
    One thing you didn't mention though - the knife is INSANELY good in this game! Rather than striking an enemy one time per swing, it hits for as long as the hitbox is hitting an enemy's hurtbox - so you can score several hits at once especially on downed enemies, making this the first time the knife wasn't a total joke best left in the item box. It also has that cool secret instant kill on Nosferatu as well.

    • @CappnRob
      @CappnRob 5 років тому +19

      I wouldn't say Code V was shitty, just very.... run of the mill. The formula got stale because new things weren't really being added to it here, and mind you Capcom WAS farting these games out hella fast in those days. After Code V we got the Big Nintendo deal where not only did we get REmake but also Gamecube ports of RE2, 3, and Code VX, as well as Zero a year later. On the PS2 side of things we got the Outbreak games (which were good but janky and ahead of their time tbh) and Dead Aim, granted that game wasn't traditional RE, it was the third in the Guncon games. Still, the point remains that an RE that rests on its laurels will magnify the faults it has, and an oversaturation of ports will devalue people's respect of them.

    • @CappnRob
      @CappnRob 5 років тому +6

      Saying Code V wasn't good is kind of hyperbolic. It wasn't great, but it was not a -bad- game. Zero was better, and its inventory system I thought was fine - many people thought it an improvement over the Item Box. Outbreak's online was ahead of its time, but it did work if you were one of the only people with broadband in 2003. Dead Aim... yeah that one was kinda shit lmao

    Having recently completed a playthrough of Code Veronica myself, I have to say you hit it pretty on the nose here. Even though the story had me crying from laughter during a couple of scenes it came off as incredibly lame compared to re3 or re2. I had my head in my hands during the romance scenes. And the gameplay itself bored me so I was mostly beating it just so I could see the next cutscene where Alfred was present and so I could scratch another Resident Evil game off of my playlist. Luckily the serieshas a couple of zingers before the next dissapointment.

    From a tonal perspective, I think the creators were more concerned with canon by the time Code Veronica was in development - rejecting the vague, ominous feel of the first two games in favour of trying to tie events, characters and backstory together in order to form some kind of lore. As mentioned, the end result is kind of underwhelming and comes across as pretty lukewarm. Especially when compared to the way Silent Hill tells its story.

    Nice video, i finished RE Code Veronica last week, and for me this game was the most hard in the classic series, the enemies are more fast than the others, and the aim isn't acurrate as the previuos one. Speaking about the enemies: the tyrant boss fight in the plane you can win easier if you shoot 10 explosives arrows at him, than you can activate the cargo and that's it; and in the steve part you can quick turn and run, he will hit you one time, you use a herb, and run, then you be able to escape with a little bit of trouble.

    After watching half of your video I decided to play the game as I love RE1 style of gameplay, I must say that I had a lot of fun and thought that it was very good game. However I agree with every critic, I particularly think the story is good but most of the dialogues are almost RE1 level, it tries to be serious but it comes across as funny. I can't even describe the rage that I felt when the game switched over to Chris, I had to load up my save from 1 hour and a half ago to do the entire Antartic Lab as Claire so I could leave my weapons and ammo for Chris. This character switching out of blue is just as trash as the final boss, at least you can cheese it with the Submachine Guns if you stand in a corner, but if you wasted your ammo it's worse than RE3 Remake Final Nemesis.

    • @northwindkey
      @northwindkey 5 років тому +4

      @@Dacho_Shaki This is also a misconception. Originally two sequels to RE2 were being made, one largely Kamiya's creative mind and one largely Mikami's. The former was a game starring HUNK, the latter was Code Veronica. Both were being made for PS1 at one point, but both got too big for the hardware. Kamiya rebooted his concept entirely and went to the PS2, Mikami and whatshisface teamed up with Flagship and moved to the Dreamcast. Nemesis was always way more of a spinoff than CV, which has more mainline cred due to it never being gaiden in development (Literally, RE3 was called Biohazard Gaiden in development). But the true RE3 was something completely rebooted into Kamiya's RE4. Which became Devil May Cry.

    • @Dacho_Shaki
      @Dacho_Shaki 5 років тому

      @@northwindkey Uhm, no. Originally there was supposed to be the true sequel to RE2, but was later canned because of Capcom's fears of PS1's lifespan (the one with a HUNK operative that you stated), so they quickly switched to Nemesis and gave that game a numbered status, while Code Veronica was always meant to be just a continuation of Claire's story ever since Capcom still continued to support Sega's platform because of the failed attempt to port RE2 to Saturn. It's noticeable how run of the mill and by the numbers Code Veronica looks as an RE title from the actual mechanics to sloppy level design. And Kamiya's idea of RE4 was rebranded as Devil May Cry for a reason because of its action oriented nature (funny how that goes). I believe Capcom made a right decision giving Nemesis a numbered status because Code Veronica holds up very poorly.

      @@Dacho_Shaki Code Veronica is more of a survival horror as opposed to Nemesis being an action game. Also, I'm not sure why people think CV holds up poorly. I first played the game only a few years back and found it much better than Nemesis. At least the original still holds up, X has the weird Wesker stuff and the HD port has like no lighting. CV feels ambitious and grand, Nemesis feels like an expanded Mr. X DLC for 2. Code Veronica from the ambitious design, to the attempt at a grand story (Notice, attempt), to the expansion of RE1 and 2's Victorian themes, to the way it was marketed feels like a sequel to RE2, the true RE3.
      I mean, let's call a spade a spade, a game starring HUNK would've been stupid. Also, Nemesis was literally called Biohazard Gaiden in development, it was always a straight spin-off, it didn't even star Jill until they threw a number on it. Code Veronica always starred Claire, always followed the story of 1 and 2, always wanted to up the ante. And Mikami himself always looked at it as a true sequel to RE2, as did most of the team (There are reports that dev teams even referred to it as RE3 at points). Mikami got so involved he threw in his Dino Crisis camera system.
      What's more likely, that they would always plan to make a game starring one of the main characters, advancing the core plot forward, and expanding the design a side game, or that it was a main game that sadly got positioned as a side game due to business decisions. There's a reason Code Veronica is the only non-numbered title you have to play to understand the story, and that RE3 is the only numbered title you don't need to play to understand the story.
      Personally, I say REmake > RE2 > Code Veronica = RE2make > RE3 > RE7 > RE1 > RE4 > RE6 > RE5 >>> RE0

      @@northwindkey ''Code Veronica is more of a survival horror as opposed to Nemesis being an action game.''...you do know that you can dual wield uzis in that game...and Steve roundhouse kicks a Bandersnatch on a wall...not to mention the Matrix reject as a main antagonist doing all the bullet time slow mo moves? Not to mention that the first weapon you get, the knife, is lot more overpowered this time around? Code Veronica's story is practically a bad telenovela with action heavy cutscenes. Even the mechanics are downgraded compared to Nemesis.
      ''CV feels ambitious and grand.'' You can literally craft bullets out of gun powder in a fly in Nemesis. And has the 180 turn which predates Code Veronica. And you can run on stairs freely rather than in Code Veronica where you have to press the action button to proceed on stairs. Nemesis has branching paths and explorable Raccoon City while Code Veronica has a straight line linear campaign.
      Have we played the same games?

    Completely agree with this review. For Halloween last year, from September until late October (perhaps early November), I played Resident Evil 1-3, Gaiden, Code Veronica, and Outbreak file 2. Even though it definitely has its positives, Code Veronica was the only one I did not want to revisit immediately after.

    i want to include an anecdote from my playthroughs, i sucessfully went into the Tyrant plane fight with full ammo, thinking that was the ONLY point you could be left weaponless. i didnt realize that near the end of the game you could accidentally go to fight Alexia as Chris weaponless. well, there is a knife in that room - so not TOTALLY weaponless. it took me 34 attempts to not be required to restart from the previous save i had made.

    Poor Code Veronica, it seems like it's destined to be the spoiled meat in the RE sandwich, between the original trilogy and the third person approach of later titles, starting with RE 4.
    Another awesome video! Won't lie when I say I'd be happy if we just took a b-line to RE 4, one of my all time favourite for sure. Guess the build up makes it all the sweeter, great to see a definitive retrospective of the Resident Evil series. Keep it up Brit!

    I really hate Code Veronica. It's auto aim is fucked up. The weapons have no impact. Steve and Alfred were poorly voice acted and shitty characters. The game is hard in a flustrating way because if you die you feel like it was because the damm enemies are cheap shot artists. No extra costumes and only one reward for obtaining a master rank. Alexia barely says a word in the game. Which could be a blessing considering Steve and Alfred's voice acting is so horrid. However Alexia has the character of a cardboard cut out. Rodrigo has more character development and lines then Alexia who was supposed to be the main antagonist.
    I have seen people say this game is the true Resident Evil 3. It isn't for a reason. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis outclassed Resident Evil: Code Veronica in almost every single way but graphically.
    In terms of Resident Evil I have always felt Code Veronica was at the middle of the barrel. It's better then Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil: Survivor, Resident Evil: Dead Aim and a host of other lame titles. But it isn't the godlike game that reduces Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to Resident Evil 2 DLC. Not even close.

    Kirby gets pushed as a second Protagonist to go along with Diddy Kong.

    I haven't watched the video yet, but I want to say that this is the entry were the series lost its way. The overall design became formulaic while at the same time getting dumbed down and stripped of complexity. It is also where the story started to shit itself with the reintroduction of Matrix powers Wesker. It also lost the horror here. I think this is the least scary entry. I don't recall anything creepy about it. Maybe a couple rooms in the Ashford mansion with the big doll hanging from the ceiling and all, but other than that, not a great sense of atmosphere.
