Its probably adaptation due to how poor the eggs condition is due to not building nest. Its adaptations for eggs to hatch really fast and the chicks are more developed to lessens the parenting time. 😅
These birds are so beautiful. We have them here on Honolulu. When a baby is discovered, the tree is marked with blue ribbon around the trunk so that it is known. They are a protected species here. So beautiful. Incredibke creatures.
I work at HWC & we get tons of them during fallout season because people birdnap the babies assuming they've been abandoned. Marking trees has gone a long way in reducing that. If you ever find one yourself but can't replace it you can contact Feather & Fur, DOFAW, or HMAR :)
I was walking to work once around Pearl Harbor and a couple of them flew really close to inspect me. They are so graceful when they fly! just a few flutters of their wings and they’re practically floating.

There are other birds that do this as well. It appears to be a speed run strat. Less time nest building means faster child bearing and raising at the cost of security. If the chick dies the parents can quickly try again. This also protects the parents as time spent foraging and building leaves them more vulnerable to predation.
Great, now imagine that this is not a bird but an ant in an ant colony and you realise this and is a deadbeat that contributes nothing to the ant nest irrigation system and also breeds young that are used by drug dealer birds, pimp birds and bird beggar bird traffickers.
Rather than staying still because of no nest, it is more likely due to fear of predators, most of which see movement but ignore stationary objects. But perhaps I am wrong.

This was a while back) Grandpa used to bring some rehi (silver sprat) to feed the litte guy. It did leave after it was strong enough. Btw it's illegal to own these, but people still steal their eggs from uninhabited islands to hatch em or eat. 😢

That’s called a stress nest. Usually means the nest they made was either destroyed or stolen, but the egg has to come out one way or another.
