  • Today we have a discussion I've been wanting to have about My Hero Academia's Final arc for a while now, how it prioritizes creating cool moments rather than building the bridge between them. Let's also talk about the Bakugo thing.

Chapter 365 Update: Yeah it's bad.
    - Edgeshot pulls a bubble out to sterilize his body
    - Somehow plans on jump starting a dead body
    - Edgeshot uses his Quirk to sew up Bakugo, but the second he deactivates his Quirk or dies, the thread should come back to being Edgeshot's body... making Bakugo explode?
    - Shigaraki felt fear so now he's weaker I guess
    - Shigaraki felt fear over a kid he killed in one hit, btw
    - Mirko is kicking the ass of the strongest dude on the planet with 1 limb
Nothing about this arc makes sense man this is insane lmaoooo

      Great video, AsarathaHS!
Honestly, the "Edgeshot pulling a bubble out of his ass" thing is what I'm stuck on: how long has he had it? When did he get it? How has it not popped at this point? Did he know this whole thing with Bakugou was going to happen and asked for it in advance, or is Wash there and he asked Wash for one? If that's the case, where the hell is Wash now and what the fuck is he doing???
I swear, this one panel raised so many unintentional questions that are probably never going to be answered, but still bother me.

@@Rereader32 Honestly i found the bubble detail to be really funny, lol. Like amid all the pseudoscience and bs he made up to make this work, i dont think sterilizing his body was gonna justify it. I just imagine Horikoshi sitting at his desk and he just goes "Of course! Because dabi copying shotos technique negated most of the damage from phosphorus.
Also dabis lack of fire resistance is still showing, mans looks like a skeleton. He knows he will die fromnthis but he is using all of his fire power to do as much damage as possible.

Bakugou's death would've been so impactful if it actually stuck when Deku showed up. Bakugou is Deku's image of victory, so imagine how impactful it would've been for Deku to see the literal embodiment of victory lying dead because he allowed himself to get separated from Bakugou. It would've been the perfect way to encapsulate the running theme of even heroes like All Might not being able to save everyone, that heroes are just flawed people like everyone else, that no hero (not even All Might) can live up to Stain's impossible expectations. Imagine if Deku blitzed passed Shigaraki faster than he could react, causing Shigaraki to flinch as he expects Deku to attack him, only to notice Deku kneeling over Bakugou's body. Deku could finally understand Shigaraki's rage about not being saved by a hero, because even with all of the heroes around him, they still didn't save Bakugou. It would've been the perfect way for Deku to understand what Shigaraki meant back during their chat in the mall, about the naive belief that society is perfect and safe because the heroes will always be there to protect it. Horikoshi literally set up the perfect culmination to so many plot lines in one chapter, only to shoot himself and his series in the foot.

Yes. Exactly this. This is what I mean when I tell people that I just can't really enjoy this final act. Yeah there are some good moments but everything from the War Arc onwards to build up this "new" conflict is just... lame. And bad. And bad. And lame. Deku continues to become more and more generic. Character arcs that have been running since the beginning hold no wait in any of the actual resolutions. Plot conveniences and contrivances coming out of fucking no where. And worst of all... All For One hanging over any and every thing that's left. It sucks.
So I can't really care when Shoto defeats Dabi in such a satisfying way (which is undone in the most recent chapter anyway), I can't enjoy the glorious evil displayed by Dabi, I can't enjoy any badass moments Shigaraki('s body) gets. I understand the pros for Bakugos "death" but what I find really flawed in its execution is it's placement in the battle itself. It's in the middle of both Shigaraki's and Dabi's fight so it not only feels anticlimactic in that sense, but also that it's a moment that accomplishes nothing. It wasn't a suicide move to win the fight or take out a vital part of Shigaraki's kit, it was just another regular attacked that completely failed. It feels shoved in for the sake of needing an emotional moment without proper planning, and just ended up as unnecessary bait.

But he did this to himself too, as a writer myself, you shouldnt concern yourself with pushy readers, you also shouldnt be afraid of taking risks in your writing, taking breaks or being afraid that a page might turn out mediocre. When writing a story, once your at the finish line, dont just give up and become the next Game of Thrones. That Bakugou chapter was perfect and would've cleaned up so many things, but because he was afraid of his fans reactions and taking such a huge risk, he backed out on the second chapter
I get that he was tired, but being tired doesn't negate the fact that the story might be important to someone reading it, that this story might have an impact on someone's life. It may seem silly or dumb to think that someone would hold such a story in such high regards, but at the end of the day, a story is to tell a story, to either inspire or make people think.

I'll throw in my two cents on the current arc and the general issues that lead to it:
In my personal belief, I truly think AFO shouldn't have been the final boss (including him essentially turning Shigaraki into his meat puppet). Now I understand sort of Horikoshi's end game is for Deku to "save" the little Tenko within Shigaraki/AFO. But I honestly think Shigaraki "moving on" from his mentor would have been a amazing parallel to All Might's relationship with Deku. It would have been amazing to see AFO who tried to control Shigaraki for his own selfish goals ends up dying to his own student because he couldn't let go of his "title" to be the ultimate villain. Had Horikoshi done this, a lot of the events happening would have been more impactful and understanding. Also, a majority of the Villains wouldn't have been immediately sidelined since the story could continue to focus the fundamental structure of "society failed on it's very citizens".
As for Bakugou's "death". When I first read it, I thought to myself, "Holy Sh**....Horikoshi has some huge balls killing a fan favorite character." But then as I thought to myself, I realize this is a amazing way to show just how much the hero society failed on the people (until that a**pull of a "revival"). Bakugou's "death" as you mentioned, clearly shows the severe consequences that came with the hero society. With many "heroes" that initially became one for fame, money, and power, the large majority that retired showed that they were incredibly flawed. Now the "true heroes" have to resort to children fighting an adult's war. By having the students risking their lives for real this time, it highlights further major changes must be done. The death of a student would have also created the groundwork that "from here on out, none of the students will be safe" in the future chapters.
Edgeshot also has absolutely no relatioship with Bakugou. And the fact that we don't really have much development on his character further makes this particular "revival" have no feeling. He doesn't actually NEED to have a relationship with Bakugou. If Horikoshi had given us some time prior to the war arc about Edgeshot's beliefs on the next generation of heroes should be better than the current ones, or that he views the current generation he is in should be the role model for the new ones, then this particular moment would make a lot of sense. Because by exploring more into Edgeshot's character and beliefs, we would understand why he choose to give his life for Bakugou's. If we had seen this, then it would connect the "sacrafice myself for the new generation" much more strongly. I completely understand the message Horikoshi is trying to show us. But the execution of it and the lack of any development on other characters just shows how much of a clusterf*** the final arc currently is.

I’m a huuuuge fan of the series and will defend it from other mid anime watchers, but this current arc has just been… lackluster? Horikoshi spent all of the war arc setting up so many things for the Endgame arc, the Dark Deku arc was pretty much PEAK MHA- so to go from all that traction, to whatever this has been, is a slap to the face to the characters he spent so much time building up throughout the series. I understand he’s tired and wants to just finish the series and I totally respect that, but it’s still disappointing at the end of the day for us fans. one of biggest MHA's weakness is lack number of villain (even though most of them are well written). The lack number of villain costs a spotlight for other class member (even Tenya Ida) and make the story burnout quickly, this fault also happens in final part of Naruto Shippuden's war arc where thousand people just fighting 2 enemies.
In MHA's case, they actually introduced many interesting new batch of villains in the shape of Paranormal Liberation Front (Re-Destro, Geten, etc). But, for some reason the author just throw them away by making them arrested, and stick to the original League of Villains member. This ruins a lot of story potential and many character screentime for me.

I read the manga on the VIZ website and whenever I read a new chapter I look at people's comments and many have been complaining, examples:
    - The final battle started out of nowhere, all from the heroes plans, they tricked AFO as if he hasn't mentioned before that he makes his plans years in advance, yeah that meant nothing.
    - When Shoto used that ultimate move on Dabi, that was hype as hell but at the same time it felt too quick and easy, case and point Dabi made a complete 180 and still returned...so the hype was for nothing.
    - When Bakugo was killed, everyone was saying "Izuku is going to show up in the next chapter and turn complete berserk again like in the previous battle" NOPE, here comes Edgeshot(a cool side character btw) and started fixing Bakugo... Izuku shows up later, goes berserk for a few seconds and Mirio snaps him back into control... so Bakugo getting killed so far meant nothing.
    - Some chapters are spent within seconds, sometimes the story hardly moves forward at all in a single chapter, like in the latest chapter for example, it was just Izuku being shocked at all the damage and hurt heroes and going berserk for a few seconds.
Yeah, what the fuck were those fingers shot out by Shigaraki, since that couldn't have been a quirk because both Aizawa and Monoma had their eyes on him using Aizawa's cancel quirk, they said it was Shigaraki's body finding it's perfect form... that was just unnatural and wasn't even a quirk... it was weird.
And Yes like you've pointed out, where is Izuku's recoil damage from using 100%? When he battled Overhaul he had Eri's quirk reverting his body to normal so there was no recoil, ok, that makes sense, but last 3 arcs? Nothing. And that was one of the biggest themes in the whole manga, sure Izuku is getting stronger and more used to OFA but still...
Also I have a question, how are none of the heroes quirks accidentally turned off by Aizawa when they are fighting so close to Shigaraki and Aizawa is watching from so far away???

You know, the worst part is not even that he comes back.
It is a Shonen manga, people coming back for flimsy reasons goes back to Dragon Ball, this is neather unheard of or that unexpected (It is still very lame for these very reasons).
However, the real bad part is that Deku. Does. Not. Even. Sees. It.
Imagine the massive emotional moment of Deku rushing to fight and "save" Shigeraki, only to see all hero's bloodied and beaten and Bakugo, a character who he had such a deep and nuanced relationship with, dead on the Floor. With Shigi even taunting him about it, reveling in his loss.
But no, we don't get that. Of course we don't, otherwise Deku's "I will save this child" thing might have consquences and Layers. Not to mention, he does not care about Shigi (just like the Plot no longer does after the Stupid AFO merge), he cares about the baby Personallity that is disconnected from all the bad stuff Shigi did. Convieniently removing moral complexity even more. It is not like their is much left anyway, I am just waiting for AFO to be behind Quirk-discrimination and the flaws of the Hero System, somehow.

I think it's better that Izuku didn't see it.
Imagine how manipulative it would have been to see Izuku's reaction only to have Bakugo revive a few chapters later. Making Izuku's whole reaction feel Meh since, in the end, it doesn't matter because Bakugo came back. This is something that at least doesn't bother me which is that we didn't have the reactions of the students or Izuku since all those reactions would have been useless. Just imagine Izuku or Kirishima reacting angry or sad for nothing because Bakugo is reviving a few chapters later.
It would be like the "you never signed my card All Might" which is now meaningless because Bakugo is going to be able to ask All Might to sign his card. Unless All Might dies but that has nothing to do with Bakugo.

Outside of those rare instances, like being told explicitly that you have that ability (which in itself can be really contrived and stupid), this is something that always gets me heated. The moment Edgeshot did his nonsense, I honestly dropped the series. It's such a damn shame. :/

It's been in decline for a while but here's some things wrong with the series.
    - power creep (and this is a massive problem) made shigi way to powerful too early on before anyone else. Ruined the end of the war and his first real fight with deku.
    - all for one's character. Until the prison break he was fantastic an S Tier villain.....then he busts out of prison in a chapter and his grand plan is to blow it up.....since then throw him in the trash.
    -stars and stripes....... sigh
    - shigi is AFO!!??? (trash)
-character deaths?? Hot take but all might should've died in his clash with AFO dekus mom, grand torino(who should also be dead), or eraser head could've done all of his scenes since. Plus with the vestiges his mentor role is worthless anyway. And obviously bakugo....
I could go on but it's bad. Really bad

I’m very mixed on the final arc. Like you put it, there’s a lot of emphasis on individual cool moments rather than a consistent progression in the story. However, while this arc has a lot of issues, I actually like the 336 reveal quite a bit, since it felt properly built up, and it’s the kind of twist that can lead to you rewatching earlier scenes thinking “oh…. Oh god.” Same goes to endeavor’s overall character progression, which has also been really satisfying to see. I just wish there was more buildup for the rest of the events in this arc.
Overall, I feel really bad for Horikoshi. He’s a good writer, and he definitely could have set this up better, but it’s clear he just wants to be done with it at this point, which I can absolutely understand. Burnout is a very real problem, especially for manga writers. Honestly, it’s kind of frustrating to see people paint him as a terrible writer because of this.

My friends bugged me to watch MHA and I never got the hype for it. I dropped it cos it really never feels like there are any stakes I'm not saying horikoshi needs to kill damn near everyone like in jujutsu kaisen but why should I care about this series if it feels like nobody's lives are ever on the line especially in a freaking war. This series has one of the biggest casts ever that keeps growing and nobody ever really dies or suffers an injury that puts them out of action in a world where supervillains are as common as pigeons. The huge cast is another reason I dropped it I can't even remember every name they're just that guy who does such a thing. There's like what only 5 characters or less in the whole class that even matter and the adults make up the majority of important characters which is still less than 10. I also loathed bakugo so hearing he actually got development and dies gave me some hope but knowing he just gets brought back again via random BS killed any interest in revisiting it in future.

In my head, I believe that Gran Torino dies after handing his cape over to Deku, like how Yoda dies after some final words of wisdom. If you wanna get dark, I imagined that after saying how death is a form of salvation, Gran Torino turns his head to look at the plug for his life support machine. Deku notices this and they sit in silence for a while. Afterward, Deku unplugs the machine as a mercy kill, which is what may happen with some other villains he needs to fight along the way. Gran Torino is showing the audience by example of how it can be necessary. That would be an insane way to kick off his solo arc.

I mostly agree everything related to Edgeshot and Bakugo's revial is some horrendous writing especially that fucking bubble.
But Bakugo's death while good as far as final scenes go was rushed imo, he didn't get any closure with Deku or any other classmate so I'd much have preferred this happened later on building up how he was breaking his body just to keep up with Deku. Granted him dying was a wonderful alternative to what we're now getting.
As for vestages I disagree them rising up when they did makes sense in the narrative based on what was happening compared to the Kamino fight. As for quirk coping yeah it needed more detail the only part that makes sense is they're weaker or at least more unstable then they original, which is why I like how Eri's was used here a final gamble using what's essentially a copy of a copy of the original.
Then the whole finger man thing with Shigaraki, it's fiction which I'd normally hand wave away such a terrible writing excuse. But for this we've seen how fucked up quirks make people so the final form of that being finger man makes sense and more so its a cool set piece to overwhelm the heroes.
Shinso is acceptable we knew he was training so this kind of power up wasn't inconceivable. Dabi's doesn't the whole idea behind Shoto's move was it couldn't be done by anyone else it was his quirk, then Dabi makes a copy like it's not 1 to 1 but it's pretty close.
Overall act 3 has disappointed me a lot and the Bakugo incident was the straw that broke the camels back. But I will still defend things which I think are unfairly called out.
P.S sorry about spelling and keep up the great videos
