  • As the September social for the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, Jared Goldinger performed an excellent program on the chapter's 3/18 "Golden-Voiced" Barton. This organ was originally installed in 1927 at the Indiana Theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana, where it was played by house organist, Dessa Byrd, among many other notable theatre organists. In 1997, the organ, which had since been acquired by CICATOS and restored under the direction of Carlton Smith, was painstakingly moved by chapter members into its new home at the Warren Performing Arts Center in Indianapolis. The organ is regularly maintained and used in chapter socials and many other concerts and programs. At the social, Jared brought out many of the organ's fabulous boisterous voices as well as many of the soft, mellow sounds that made these organs famous. Here he is playing his medley of songs from "The Music Man." Enjoy!

I remember that in the mid-1960s I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Barton at the ATOS convention in Chicago. He was still spry and had many stories to tell. I remember the old Chicago Stadium Barton organ and it's a shame all the pipework was later destroyed in a tragic fire only leaving the console untouched.

Barton built formidable instruments. It's a true shame that the stadium organ was lost. Thankfully, there are still a handful of great Bartons around (like this one) for the public to enjoy.
