Amazing that Ligety pulled that off on a course that was done.
Great recovery by Ligety in a situation where he had everything to lose.
Ligety appears to be carving two arcs to distribute the load and maintain speed. First arc begins with his upper inside ski and second arc continues on from that with his outside ski. He's rolling two arcs, switching between inside and outside. As Shiffrin says, she knows what he's doing, it is just very tough to do.
The toughest part is keeping that outside edge from tracking. Have to be SERIOUSLY strong to keep that outside edge in control, and SERIOUSLY athletic to keep both tracks relatively true.

I was playing a video game about that. It said you could get extra speed from tipping a gate (flag). No?
The only way that works in the real world is if you knock over the gate because you are as far inside the line without hooking your ski (or hand/arm, that hurts bad and usually yanks your pole out of your hand).
What happened to Luitz is the worst possible DQ you can have, Mikaela Shiffrin had almost the same thing happen in the Aspen GS early this season (late 2016) when she went down on her side right before the last gate in a race she was guaranteed to win if she kept upright.
Video games aren’t real life. I used to race and coach and I have never heard or seen anything like that. Sounds like something game devs made up.
I do this sport It’s actually pretty fun
