  • Swapping the compressor pump can be easily achieved from the bottom of the car. There is no need to remove the power steering, radiator, or disrupt any other systems. This ten minute video also covers the basics of recharging with R12 refrigerant.

Just did this in the shop on a 82 380sl, been on the rack two days. Couldn't get on the 19mm bolt for the top motor mount so released the smaller 9/10mm bolts holding the mount on. Make sure whoever is doing this to keep everything loose or else the rear bolts with the spacers will not line up and you'll mess the threading up and have to pull it out and Chase the threads. I replaced with the OEM compressor. My boss said these were added on by general motors. Maybe that's why it's such a pain to remove and get them back on. Also make sure you have extra long extensions and Universal's and swivels as well as good quality hex short sockets, using snap on hex sockets myself. The two bracket bolts are the pain in the ass. For me to get the spacers back in I use a long 1/4 extension to push up into place then slide my hand up inside to insert the bolt, then go from the middle of car with long extension and swivel. This job isn't for the faint of heart 😂😂. The OEM compressor is still good on the one in the shop, the clutch went on it.

@@jeremy0156 long extension with universal joint and black tape. Also patience. Yeah if I remember these is a curve or something in the way but u can still do them. I used extension half way down the car and guided onto bolts.

Did you remove all of the subframe bolts or just the one side?

Also a lift is practical I could not imagine doing this without one, not sure it would be possible without one on a 380. If ur using the OEM compressor it's heavy so be prepared. When u put the new one into place put the bracket on and line up the bolts don't tighten all the way, also use a smaller screw to hold one side of the upper front bolts to line up the top two. Add one of the top bolts loose then line the rear bolts and spacers up and run them in by hand and ratchet at first do not use air to start them. Also I use a reduced and short 7mm hex socket, grabbed a pair of pliers to tighten the rear bracket bolt. trying to do with a swivel is almost impossible and u can't get a ratchet or ratchet wrench on it so don't even bother. I took off like this guy did but didn't put back on like that, as said used a 1/4 to 3/8 reducer and hex socket. Lined it up and grabbed the socket with pliers and tightened that way. Much easier to me. Just giving some tips, the upper rear bolt can be done with a long extension and Universal, black tape the universal. Then line it up as best as possible. The bracket is in the way as well so a real pain to do the upper bolt 😂. Good luck
