Really was great to see a true villain. No tragic backstory like Flowey, no kind but broken heart like Asgore, or honorable passion like Undyne, he just wants you dead
I think it's mainly because he's been manipulated by power and greed. He'll do anything to destroy the opposing light and empower the darkness inside of him, even if it means causing chaos by throwing his own son off a cliff. He truly is the chaos king.

_"In a series that puts an emphasis on how no one is truly evil and that pacifism is always an option, the King of the Dark World gleefully defies such a notion. A rotund, monstrous tyrant defined by his genocidal hatred for the Light World's inhabitants, the King protects a dark fountain that the enigmatic Knight created to throw off the balance of light and dark, and is giddy at the prospect of letting it overwhelm and kill all Lightners so he can take their land for himself. When his young son Lancer befriends Lightners Kris and Susie as well as their Lightner-sympathetic friend Ralsei and tries to convince him to spare them, the King furiously strangles the boy and threatens to hurl him to his death if the party doesn't surrender. When they submit, he forces Lancer to watch as he tries to execute his new friends. When the party fights back and has him on the ropes, he feigns remorse for his actions and tricks the kind-hearted Ralsei into healing him, only to stab him in the back by brutalizing and attempting to murder him and his friends, all the while mocking him for his misplaced compassion."_ *TV Tropes' Complete Monster entry on the King of the Dark World/King of Spades*

BREAKING NEWS JUST IN: king on some crack threatens to throw son of Castle because he's friends with an edgy human, barney the dinosaur and a fluffy goat prince.
In terms of the unique battle themes in chapter 1, This is still my favorite, don't get me wrong i fucking love The World Revolving and Vs Susie, But this theme encapsulates the oppressive horror of a ruler the King is, and how you too, should fear him in this fight, the only sane thing that comes out of King's mouth so far is admitting that Lancer wouldn't of died if he was thrown and that he wanted cashews, every other world out of his mouth was meant to put fear in us.
I love this song so much. The way it starts so similarly to the chiptune castle theme, then suddenly turns into a more modern, evil-sounding version of the same song, the remixed bit of Lancer's theme. It fits the King perfectly. By far my favorite part is 1:08. It sounds like the musical equivalent of the things Kris, Susie, and Ralsei do in the battle. The way it starts out very dramatic, and then turns confident mirrors how the heroes realize their words won't work, so they change how they ACT.
Even beaten and imprisoned, King believes we're nothing comparing to the Knight. Whoever this guy is, it must be a very smart and strong dude to make a servant THAT loyal.
Considering that castle town had two rematches with minibosses it's definitely plausible that in the full game we might get buffed versions of the final bosses of each chapter later on. (Imagine a Queen AND King battle with buffed stats.)
He was nerfed cuz he was the first boss, but as someone already said, it is possible that he may eventually become friendly and help you train before you fight the final boss.

He truly is the chaos king.
he was probably a lot nicer before the knight met him, considering how friendly lancer and queen are. i mean he shows a nice side sometimes too. same thing goes for jevil and spamton
Battle against a true villain.
Well, they were locked in the closet for so long. I guess that's his backstory and reason why he wants to kill lightners
It's confirmed that Seam and Jevil were best pals, performing together at the castle. But after Jevil met "possibly Gaster", he gone mad.

Mostly because of the trauma Jevil has enacted on me, but also because The Chaos King is a damn good song, I agree with you.
Asgore's theme:
Solemn, melancholy, hopeful and slower paced.
Embodies King Asgore Dreemurr and the grief & hope he carries within.
King's theme:
Manic, deranged, dark and faster paced.
Embodies King Of Spades and his hatred and bloodlust that he lets fester inside.
