Articulated Ninja did an amazing breakdown about this and he pretty much nailed it when he compared it to the last Black Widow. She came with 3 headsculpts, a bunch of accessories, and it featured the new female buck, and that figure sold for the standard $25.
This new MAXIMUM Spider-Man doesnt offer that many "new" features other than a new neck and swapable forearms and those dont justify a $50 price point.
I agree, $35 would be the ideal sweet spot. $40 would be stretching it but still acceptable, $45-50 would be a mistake, and here's why: what are you gonna do when you are done with the A-list characters? How are you going to justify a MAXIMUM Ghost Rider for $50 when you already had one that included a bike for $50. After the top tier characters are done Hasbro are going to run into the issue of having the A-,B+ characters released and the figure is going to shelf warm and eventually go on discount or end up at Ollie's or Ross. No disrespect to Hawkeye fans, but im not paying $50 for a MAXIMUM Hawkeye.

Charging a premium price for what is essentially a regular quality figure with extra parts is just wrong. At that price point you are competing against lines like SH Figuarts and Mafex, which produce very detailed, high quality figures.

Seeing new companies privately owned who make and sell their figures for under $30 and it come with a figure that’s just as well articulated, if not better than some marvel legends or most of them. Seem to have more paint. And comes with tons of accessories an even a …I.e. action force valaverse is one of those companies. Then take Jada toys and look at the stuff they come out with. Packaging for their street fighter looks amazing because it looks like an old arcade game that we used to play when we were kids at a pizza shop or something. And then it also comes with a really nice sculpt figure. That too has just as much paint if not more than a lot of your marble legends. And on top of it, they give you accessories that you would expect because that’s what you would see in the game. And a lot of those accessories aren’t small little accessories. They’re pretty decent size so much so they have to come with a specialized stand for the accessory alone. And they only sell them for $25. And then you look at Marvel legends is $1 billion company that’s been around before I was born. I think it’s been around since 1923 or something or at least the name. And they sell a figure with little paint and just as much articulation that these smaller companies are doing with their figures., and most times you get a tiny little accessory and you’re really lucky if you get extra hands. And they want $25-$30 for their figures. You make the figure a little bit bigger not by much and maybe put a couple more accessories in it and now they want $35 worth it. And from what you’re saying now they’re gonna put a little bit more accessories into a box and they wanna charge $50. I just don’t understand that. It really makes you feel like Hasbro is price gouging us. Yes I understand you have employees to pay and licenses to pay out but so does Jada toys and other companies like that. I know people are gonna bring up or Mafex or SH figurearts etc. they go for $50-$150. But they are also not a domestic company like Hasbro is to United States. And those companies like.Mafex also have more detailed figures and better accessories, and most times even better articulation in the plastic doesn’t feel as cheap as a plastic they use and hasbro because they still have to make it safe enough for a 4 year-old to play with where those other companies specifically state like 14 or older. I don’t get me wrong. I like hasbro, I have a pretty big collection. From G.I. Joe , Star Wars, black and vintage series, to Marvel legends etc., etc. So even though I may not be happy with the prices of Hasbro at times, I’m one of those people that you got to blame because I still purchased their stuff because you just gotta have it. I just feel a multi billion dollar company should be able to create a better more highly detailed😮 and painted action figure with articulation actually works like it’s supposed to, and also still give us plenty of accessories all for that $25 to $30. A smaller companies are able to do it so why can’t they?

Hasbro ain’t Mafex or S.H. Figuarts. They’ll struggle with this. I hope they do as it’ll force them to up their game. I can see this as a last gasp before they let the license go.

Your price point argument is very logical. I can see Hasbro and store buyers for mass market using this line of reasoning. It really should be $35, that is what I see when I look at what you get, but that does not fit into the current skews on the shelves; like you pointed out.

  • @remus_lupin

Transformers already did this with Leader Class ($50 to $55), years ago. Mostly Voyager-sized figures ($33 to $35), & a bunch of extra parts (& engineering, in some cases), to make up the price. That hit the ceiling for what Transformers fans are willing to pay, for that size of figure.
Few actually liked the idea, especially when the extra parts didn't make sense, but were forced in, to comply with the line gimmick/ extra parts mandate. Blitzwing especially upset the fandom. He came with a pair of oversized gauntlets, with zero explanation, that barely integrated with his vehicle modes. He came with them, because transparent add-ins was the mandate. I got my Shockwave on a discount, for closer to Voyager price. His parts integrate better, but don't fit the character. Shockwave's also simpler than a Triplechanger, so I didn't see an engineering explanation for him being Leader Class. Just extra parts, for the sake of extra parts.
There are a few exceptions. Namely Galvatron & the SS86 Dinobots. They're bigger figures, so were seen as being more worth it.
Hasbro's already gone through this. Hopefully, they learned from it, & price Marvel Maximum more reasonably, for you all.

I don't like the road this Max figure is paving if the price is going to start at $50...but to say this Spidey figure will show up at discount stores is crazy talk. People *will* buy this figure at $50. They'll ve pissed as all get out, but they'll still buy it. I'm on the fence myself if it really turns out to be $50. I have that GR figure and did preorder it, which I never do for 99% of the figures I have in my collection. But that GR at $50, *to me* , has value. The Max Spidey, has less value to me (at $50), because I will not be using half of those web accessories.

Hasbro charged 40-50 for the new starting lineup and then failed miserably they were the same size packaging as legends. There's only $30 worth of plastic and molds.

All things being equal, ( figure with lots of accessories, 2 figure pk., or figure with vehicles) I find better value in a 2 pack or fig with vehicle. I can make use of the extra fig or display my fig with the vehicle, I find all the extra hands, heads, web pieces, and what nots as useless most of those will end up in a box somewhere or even lost never to be used again. Suggestion sell it as a basic figure with 2 extra hands and 1 extra head and web effect and then put out a separate accessory pack for maybe $10 which can be used with any Spider-Man figure.

One thing I think Hasbro wants to aim for is that import quality range...say, before BBTS gets a hold of it. Imports don't tend to have clear cut price ranges. I think that will change as hasbro grows its collector brand of toys more and more, straying towards the adult collector market. So, I think there's a chance that they're going to want to compete. It’s about shelf space. 6-inch collector figures are geared toward collectors, sure, but still appeal by price-point and playability to children and gift-givers (who still make up about 80-92% of toy sales, depending on how you measure).
That cross-generational appeal and accessible price-point optimizes the use of shelf space. More expensive figures are awesome for adults, but the relatively small size of the adult collector market (relative to the overall population) creates a situation where those figures underperform at retail and don’t justify the valuable shelf space, ultimately causing the line to struggle.

Thanks for sharing! I was guessing closer to $65, so I’d be even happier if the Maximum line was as low as $50. I think that’s a fair price for a fig that’s comparable to an import and we can save on shipping.
