I posted this video years ago and I don't see any comments giving props to the guitar player. You can tell Stevie was just playing around the box but that guitar players melodic rhythm guitar chords are what really makes you feel this song. Props to who ever that dude is. It had to be said. :-)
Yet one more example of the ungodly insane talent of Stevie Wonder. That guy can make anything sound funky. Goddamn I loves me some Stevie Wonder. Whoever posted this, THANK YOU. That is the BEST version of that song I've EVER heard.
I once had a good friend who had sent me a recording of the song "close to you" that he played on his guitar, but he specified - "the Stevie wonder version". I should have looked this up ages ago... This video makes me feel all sorts of emotions! Thanks for uploading. :")
This song the way it is here smashes any RnB I have ever heard. And I've heard it all. Some night I just sit and listen to this over and over. Soo good. Just sooo good.
I say this out of love and respect , and because I love him so and I don't want him to leave us sooner than need be. My intentions were not to offend him or his family. I have been a fan for over 35 years, and I will remain a fan forever. I want to thank you for your music and sacrifices and the many times you have put your career on the line for us. I love you, Good Brother. Sincerely one of your truly and most devoted fans.
Wow...I didn't even know that Steview was laying it down on the Talk box this far back!! This has got to be from around '71 or '72. Great clip. WANT MORE!!!
I've heard alot of music in my life. But this man right here completely refreshes the meaning of talent. The amount of talent he's showing in this video is a far cry from the winners of American Idol, you know what i mean?
This clip is so addictive...infinite thanks to who ever uploaded this, but can you PLEASE make the world a better place and upload the whole video...I'll even buy it.
God... what a beautiful rendition. Those floritures at 0:15 and at 0:28 just... ahh nevermind. Such a pleasure to see him enjoying his own playing, just like a child. Thanks for posting.
Stevie is channeling the vocoder gods. No computers, no editing, no special efx... just a tube playing the sound of his synth and modulated by his mouth.
@Bredinskee I met Stevie Wonder in 1984,I was in awe,all I could do was shake his hand in siLence. I got a very close look at his eyes,if you are not used to seeing blind people it will take you aback for a minute. My description is his eyes looked as though he had a very thick, but clear glaze over them. He is kinda tall, like 6'1'', & his hair was the most incredible braiding patterns & twist, with the 2 ponytails in the back. Stevie Wonder & Rick James are my idols
@SiqMachine I think a lot of the audience saw this as novelty at first, and were quickly chagrined when they realized how very beautiful the performance was. This tears me up every time I watch it.
"on the day that you were born The angels got together and decided To create a dream come true So they sprinkled moondust in your hair Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue"
@Bredinskee I agree with you 100%, with all the awards & compliments Stevie has got,can you believe he is still underrated? Anytime they say Paul McCartney & John Lennon were the greatest songwriter,i will always feel that. Stevie Wonder is the greatest singer/songwriter,producer,arranger,multi-instrumentalist,civil & human rights advocate, humanitarian ever! Long live the Official UN Messenger of Peace & Goodwill.
History In the 1960s, Bill West, a country music steel guitar player (husband of Country singer Dottie West), and Pete Drake. Drake, a Nashville mainstay on the pedal steel guitar and friend of Bill West, used it on his 1964 album Forever, in what came to be called his "talking steel guitar." The following year Drake released three albums with the box, Pete Drake & His Talking Guitar, Talking Steel and Singing Strings, and Talking Steel Guitar.[1]
Hey folks you have to remember.. this was a new technique in music that was beginning to be more than a novelty. Steve was experimenting with several technologies in music during this time and in fact electronics in the music industry was changing dramatically. Still the tools of technology in music comes down to the genius of the artist that uses it and Steve was and is definitely one of them.
Can't believe frank sampled it, I loved it ever since I found it.

This song the way it is here smashes any RnB I have ever heard. And I've heard it all. Some night I just sit and listen to this over and over. Soo good. Just sooo good.

the talkbox is amazing. the thing so touching about it is the irony of it, how by making your voice robotic, it becomes so much more touching
@SiqMachine I think a lot of the audience saw this as novelty at first, and were quickly chagrined when they realized how very beautiful the performance was. This tears me up every time I watch it.
"on the day that you were born
The angels got together and decided
To create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moondust in your hair

I've watched this a hundred times and it makes me so upset that it ends just as he starts to sing. So badass.
