    Interesting version with the two pistons. Nice demonstration of the functioning, thank you.

    Hi, the double pistons way: one for Time Exposure, one for Instant Exposure.
    Greetings from Paris

    Nick! We don't use graphite dust to lubricate these shutters!! Clean out any rust with very fine steel wool on the inside. When all is clean, use furniture wax, well buffed inside the box. Everything else works dead dry - no lubricant at all.

      Thanks for the advice but my larger packard will always have friction between the blades and the casing because it was crushed. I have considered remanufacturing the case. I may as well remanufacture the damaged blades as well if i am going to do that. I'll keep an eye out in Kmart if they have a Packard this big it will save me a lot of time.

    one of the pistons probably has a pinhole at the end of the stroke so the air automatically escape while the other doesn't. That way, you don't have to mess with a pin to get long exposures.

    So that'd be why it's called "bulb" mode. Huh.

    if its still in bits could you scan each part into a computer with a coin or something for scale would love to try and make one of these

      It wouldn't be that hard, would probably be a bit less compact if you were to make my own. All mine are assembled and working at the moment. I may attempt making on if the need arises.

      Nick Thorley I'm assuming this is made from tin or some other metal hence the thinness. It would probebly end up thicker if laser cut but I could always cut it by hand. Do you know of any templates that are available?

    • @thorleyphotography
      @thorleyphotography  6 років тому

      No templates sorry. If you were going to make one the best thing would be to buy one to use the design, even a broken one if you are budget restricted. You would also be likely to alter the design to make manufacture easier, and make it as big as can be practical. The casing on most shutters that I have seen are a thin sheet metal and the blades are some sort of early plastic that greatly resembles whats used to make dark slides. Now that I think of it dark slides would be an excellent material to make shutter blades.

    What type of camera is this exactly? I just picked up an Eastman View Camera no. 2 and this looks to be the same or in the family. I am awaiting its arrival and choosing a lens shutter combo (with only small format experience) so your video's are very helpful!

    4inch x4inch Not sure of the Packard model number I've got but it doesn't open and close a fast as yours,any tips on how to get it to open faster,the item looks clean although i haven't taken it apart?

      I think you want to determine if it's getting a good air signal, perhaps take the hose off the piston. If the hose gives good air consider the piston might be gummed up. If you think the piston is good you may have to look at the blades. I hope not because these things are not easy to work on. I have a video of one of these apart, it was a bit intense.

    Can you please make pictures at an right angle or trace the shapes of the parts?
    It doesn't look to complicated for a DIY.

      I'm sorry I can't bring myself to pull it apart right now. You might be able to purchase one that needs repair very cheap then use it as a stencil.
