  • There was one good thing about the COVID lockdown, it gave me time to plan this route to perfection. Probably one of the greatest rides you can do in Europe and no one knows about it (until now)! Epic climbs, stunning scenery, spectacular wild camping, this is Bikepacking at it's very best. What do you think?

    I love this one. Warm norwegian summer days. You want nothing else than being outdoors, all day long. Bikepacking, taking a swim, breath fresh air, see the mountains in the horizon. It doesn't have to be fanzy, Matthew. This is authentic bikepacking experience. Great watch!

    Spectacular cycling. I've gotten the impression that unlike Australia, Scandinavian countries are very clean. It was refreshing not seeing any rubbish roadside.

      Unfortunately you will find small amounts of litter along parts of some main roads. But for many Scandinavians dropping litter into nature is like chopping off your own hand.

      @@matthewnorway That's good to know, and bravo to the locals! I wish Aussies felt the same way here. After bikepacking NZ's South Island March 2020 which also impressed me with how comparatively clean it was compared to Australia (as well as the spectacular cycling!), I think there's some similarities.

      @@soloist777 Australian here, where is it dirty in Australia? Do you mean on the side of a big highway? You might see some rubbish there, but generally I find Australia at the cleaner end of countries I've ever been to, and that includes Europe.

    You were lucky being able to go outside, do some sport and even going to other cities!

      That made zero sense.
      Outside transmission was negligible. And people needed the sun, mental reset and physical exercise to bolster their immune system. Especially in those times.
      Obviously going on an shopping spree in crowded cities was a big Nono back then.

    Hi Matthew, Thanks for all the videos, outstanding work!
    I'm going bikepacking in Norway on a Nukeproof Digger, starting next week. About 10 days. I still hesitate on the route but was interested on that specific one from Oslo to Stavanger. Do you share your GPX files? Thanks!

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  2 роки тому

      I have a detailed route of Oslo to Stavanger that features many P.O.I's and plenty of information regarding accommodation, food options, etc. The price is 10 euros and that money goes to supporting the Cycle Norway organisation. Send me your email address and you will receive a PayPal request. Once paid a link will be sent to your email where you can access the route, and download the gps file, etc.

    Love your videos. How do you maintain your water supply in the wilderness especially during wild camping?

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! You’ll find plenty of streams and rivers in the wilderness areas. Majority of the time they are fresh and completely drinkable without requiring any filter or boiling process.

    • @gusjeazer
      @gusjeazer 3 роки тому

      I regularly filter water from rivers(even big ones), fountains and creeks in Germany and haven't gotten sick yet. I've used the same Sawyer mini for a 1,5 years. I clean it before each trip (squirt some water through, blow it back out a few times). At some point I'll need to replace it. I'm sure in Norway the water is a lot cleaner and won't be a problem, even drinking it straight from the river. I always filter lake water. Just in case.

      In any case we'll be in Norway soon. we will be crossing Norvegian border near Höljessjön and joining with what seems like national route 9, then somehow ride to Trondheim. From there navigation initially tries to take us over a mountain top, so we switched to road cycle profile, which improved things (route near Osensojen, then Glomma river, etc). in any case it seem it will be a challenge to ballance cyclability (ie.no killer climbs, prefereably paved - we're the "carry wardrobe and kitchen sink" type) and sceniqueness of the roads here. altought everything should be scenic in Norway 😁

    • @zoladkow
      @zoladkow 2 роки тому

      scratch that... decided to stick to Klaralven (route 62 then 26 on norvegian side). This was a great asphalted road, not much traffic (but some heavy lorries carrying logs). just after norvegian border, lots of fishing spots, good for a tent and easy access to water. We followed roads 26, 217 (via a connecting dirt road - solid), 28 and 30. After Røros was the nicest and longest descent (reminiscent of swiss valeys) but under heavy downpour. This got us to E6, but with a nice parallel roads and markngs for cyclists (first in this country that we've seen!).
      All in all my current opiniin is that Norway tries to passively discourage this form of tourism. Info points are closed on weekends. Rest stops have benches but no shelters (in case it rains or theres scorxhing sun you stay in your car, no?) in essence NOTHING to help out other than existing but unrelated local infrastructure (like toilets near chapels/graveyards or SOME wc on rest areas for motorists). Markings of EV1/national 1 suddenly appeared when we've reached road 17 (lesser roads are not worthy?) No way to know for sure if we took tge right way after Trondheim, just followed what was indicated on OSM... 🤷 in general, strange that a seemingly rich country with much potential has so little regard for cycletourism. We'll see the Lofoten next. I wonder if whole countrys boudget went on those fancy toilets there they are so proud about 🤦
