Founded by Glasgow based music promoter Paul Downie (Pelmet Nites, Save BBC Introducing campaign) and musician/artist manager Vicki Cole (Randolph's Leap), Comets & Cartwheels is an exciting new Scottish record label project for 2012, focusing around the digital and physical release of singles, EPs and albums primarily within the indie/folk vein (and with a view to mirroring some of the aesthetics and success of such admired labels as Drag City, Bella Union, Olive Grove Records, Sub Pop and Fence Records).
Joining the team to handle web content management and social media/marketing are Jordan Laird & Scott Rankin, the talented pair behind Edinburgh based website Danger Is Everywhere, which in the last year alone has generated a readership exceeding 100k and a deal with VICE magazine's blogging network. And last but not least, we have musician Kieran Heather (Endor/Washington Irving) on duty handling radio and all things creative.
Our initial roster consists of the relatively unknown minimalist folk band Quickbeam, with whom we will be releasing our first single, and much lauded Glaswegian indie veterans Endor who are currently writing new material. We have also recently confirmed we will be working with Glasgow based act PartWindPartWolf over the course of this year and will be actively looking to expand our roster going forward.
Preparations for our initial digital single release - Quickbeam's Seven Hundred Birds - on April 9th, have included a trip to Cumbria at the beginning of the year to work with BAFTA Short Film award nominee Mat Sheldon (Crush Film) and Director of Photography Iain Struthers on a stunning promo video for the song. In line with this release we will be running PR through London based online press magician Paul McCallum of A Badge of Friendship and will soon announce the details of our Glasgow launch gig (13/04/12) and other prominent support slots south of the border.
All in all it's looking like 2012 will be an exciting time for the new project, which also has a Canadian connection in the pipeline.
