- Lieutenant Kunal Ghangas says the Australian Defence Force is looking to increase to “about 101,000 people” serving full-time across the defence force by 2040.
Defence Force Recruiting is currently hosting one of the Australian Defence Force's largest careers fairs to showcase opportunities and roles available.
“The idea is we have real-life Australian Defence Force members that people in Melbourne can come and have a chat to, rather than just looking at websites and job profiles,” Lt Ghangas told Sky News Australia.
The biggest percentage of those who walk into a recruiting centre are immediately classed as unacceptable to serve. Speaks volumes as to current community education and health standards, beliefs and expectations.

By policy that drives down the economy of the bottom 80%, that makes college impossible, unattractive, impractical, unaffordable, that makes broken homelife and community unbearable, by glorifying war, by freaking people out that the godless hordes will invade and nuke, by making people feel it's better within the military when it happens, by the promise of lucrative private military contractors and soldiers of fortune, by making it seem like violence and force and by supremacy and Gods will and even the opportunity to be fast tracked within the mon or gangs once out, maybe, that's how.
GI BIll, citizenship with military service, and ultimately that it's better to sign up and have some say where you will serve instead of the random assignment and uncertainty of getting drafted, which now looks more and more likely.

In other words, the war was about the petrodollar and those who fought on the coalition side were used to fight for western oil interests.
Afghanistan just so happens to be where much of the opium that supplies both the legal and illegal drug trades. Illicit drug money is often used to fund "black" projects and actions because those funds are outside the scrutiny of government oversight agencies.

Getting 100,000 uniformed personnel is good, but you have to keep them. The Government got rid of the 20 year service DFRDB pension do there is no incentive to stay in service. We may need to poach from the UK, Canada and NZ

No offence but 2040, should be that now, you got Israel 1/4 of the population and they have 169,000 full time personnel and 450,000 in reserve, i get that they are in different circumstances over there so they probably require that many but still you would think that we would at least have 100,000 now, plus is this an additional 100,000 or just bringing us up to 100,000?

Australia's military is far too small to achieve the task required of it as it is vastly dwarfed in terms of numbers of personnel and equipment by all of its neighbours. This is the result of decades of underfunding and neglect by its politicians who prefer to focus on quality of lifestyle type issues at the expense of fundamental matters of existence. Enabling this strategic apathy and negligence is the misguided belief that US military power is nearly unlimited and globally dominant and that it would automatically come to the defence of Australia should any of her neighbours attack her.
The US is not obligated under the ANZUS Alliance to send troops or equipment to our aid in the event of an attack upon us. They are only obligated to engage in talks with us and nothing more.
As we have all seen, the US did not assist Ukraine, a fellow democracy, when it was invaded because it is not under any binding treaty-based obligation to do so. Even though failure to render assistance to Ukraine has resulted in Russian forces now sitting on the borders of NATO countries with whom the US does have a treaty backed obligation to come to their defence in the event they are attacked. The Americans have chosen to delay dealing with the problem choosing, instead, to only engage in talking about it, a clear indication of where their interests lie. It would not be surprising to see the US attempt to withdraw from NATO in the coming years (after 2024?).
We should not expect the US to do anything other than talk with us should we come under attack by a foreign power. Even if they did want to assist us they do not have the shipping capacity needed to move their forces and equipment here. The US President is not able to use the Defence Production Act to commandeer an international shipping line as all the big shipping lines are foreign owned.
If Ukraine were a nuclear-armed state Russia would not have been able to invade it. Look at how the small nation of North Korea, with a population of 25 million, laughed off the US, a nation of more than 320 million, under President Trump, despite his threats of raining "fire and fury" down upon them. Now contrast that with what has been happening in Ukraine, a nation of 44 million, being crushed out of existence by Russia, a nation of 147 million and nuclear armed.
However, what is clear is that no one would risk attacking us if we were nuclear-armed. Better to prevent war than to try to prosecute one inflicted upon us. The way to maintain peace between nations is by the possession of nuclear weapons because these weapons rule out the possibility of war altogether.
I took the time to read through your diatribe, and I can say you are mistaken. I was born and raised in the US and let me tell you, if Australia gets attacked, we are willing to die for you and your sovereignty. The people who mess with you will regret it.
On Ukraine, we have shipped more firepower and munitions than any other nation. We have given the Ukrainians more funds in 100 days than most nations spend on their militaries in one year.

ADF or GDF government defence force?
I raised and educated my 5 kids to have enquiring minds and to not blindly follow orders, so somehow I don't think they are a good fit for the ADF, and they aspire to a higher pay grade anyway. For others perhaps it is a good stepping stone opportunity.
@victoria A career path that is predictable, working class people with aspirations, better than a basic apprenticeship, perhaps... Certainly the starting pay is better for young people.
