    Hi, Sophie! Very nice presentation and explanation! I was an IT professional for 43 years (retired now), and used IBM mainframes and (later in my career) PCs for that entire time. I have some questions, if you have time.
    1) I am thinking about going to an iMac. I do not have heavy-duty content/photo editing requirements, and I am not a gamer. My uses would be light photo editing, email, internet browsing, video creation/editing/viewing, and content streaming/casting. The parts of a computing device that are critical to me are the interfaces: keyboard, mouse and especially the screen. Based on all of this, what iMac would you recommend for me that could be viable for 5+ years or so?
    2) I do not currently know how to navigate an iMac. Is there a basic tutorial that you can point me to that explains how to use an iMac (pointers on Safari would be appreciated (like how to create bookmarks, etc.)?
    3) How do I get what I have on my current PC over to an iMac? By that I mean what I have on Google Drive, iTunes, and various documents and other files on my HDD.
    Thank you, Sophie, and have a blessed day!!

    • @sophiedodsworth
      @sophiedodsworth  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! 👋 Thank you so much. I think the M1 24" iMac would have great lasting power, and could certainly be viable for the next 5+ years due to the performance of the M1 chip. With that being said, there is the option to make upgrades to the Intel 27-inch iMac yourself if you're clued up on that sort of thing, which would make that a viable option for years to come. (I'm personally not 100% clued up with upgrading myself, which is why I'm happy using my M1 24" iMac!) I have two videos on my channel, M1 iMac customization and First 9 things to do on a new MacBook, and I think those would be good beginner friendly videos that go through the initial setup of the computer and which settings you can adjust. I hope that helps!

    Overall the 2020 5k iMac with the i7 processor and 5500XT graphics card outperforms all M1's with the exception on the M1 Ultra in all performance tests with the exception of single core processes.... such as launching of an app. Once you're in the app it doesn't matter as much. I think this is one of the reasons Apple killed the 27inch iMac, it's because it outperforms the initial M1's and that would hurt the sales of the Studio Mac and the Studio Display.

    1st off the M1 iMac is limited to 16GB RAM and is not upgradeable. The 2020 27" is user upgradeable to 128GB RAM.
    Also if you don't mind trying to open up the 2020. Not for the faint hearted. Risk cracking the screen if you aren't super careful. You can do a CPU upgrade to an i9-10850K 10 core CPU.
    Plus the larger screen on the 2020 is more easy to read. Also If you need to boot camp Windows? sorry M1 can't do that. 2020 can. I did have the 2021 M1 iMac for a week and did not like it. To limiting with only 2 ports on the back. So exchanged it for the 2020 27" iMac. I am very happy with my Big heavy 2020 27" iMac.
    As for a 32" M1 iMac that rumor was squashed. It will be a 27" according to latest info.
    Just my opinion

      The M1 chip is part of everything it does. Meh is not a word to describe the 24’ imac. I would say winner. I recently got the top tier with 16gb ram and 1TB ssd. It is the most beautiful(I got blue) and fastest computer I have used, and for business and personal use it is the most perfect screen size I have ever used. The new features and updates can’t be beat. But I don’t use it for video editing(because I don’t do any) which I know might limit some people because of the benefit a bigger screen provides. I’m interested to see what the new larger iMac Pro’s will look like but I’m beyond happy with the 24 I bought.

    tho, i think it would of been better mentioning how the max model imac 27" can be upgraded to an i9 for very heavy tasks, or a better graphics card for those who may prefer video games

    other than that, i think this video is helpful!

    Your review is missing a few things. For one, the Intel based iMac can still run all Intel-based Windows applications. For people who may want to use Parallels Desktop as a PC, or dual boot using Bootcamp, you can't do this with the new M series Macs including the iMac. However, the flip side of this is that the M based iMac can run all of the iOS apps that you use on your iPad and iPhone. Second, it would be nice if you had shown some real world benchmark graphics rather than just opening a bunch of apps. Lastly, you forgot to mention that the 27" iMac still has a door in the back of it to upgrade the RAM, with the 24" everything is soldered on so you can't upgrade the RAM. This is all pretty much a moot point as Apple has discontinued the 27, but still has some refurbished ones left which is how I ended up on your video as I am considering both right now.

    Thank you, Sophie, I’m glad you’ve emphasised the weight of the older iMac. I’m too old and thin for moving that weight. I’ve just bought a silver upgraded 24” M1 iMac. And I’m at two minds about it, due to the peripherals (and not keen on the “in the cupboard” speakers. I don’t use a mouse (not since 20 years ago), and the Magic trackpad is driving me crazy. I’m just hoping I’ve got a replaceable dud. Tapping does nothing and left clicking hard will wear out my shoulder muscle! It’s like a “bloke’s machine”. The trackpad makes my tasks on the iMac very slow. Whereas my 2013 13” MacBook Air has a fabulous built-in trackpad with no “deep clicks” and super-fast responses. I’m hoping the trackpad will be replaced by Apple. If not, I might just have to buy a MacBook Pro instead.
    One note about the missing logo. I think that was a huge mistake n Apple’s part, as many people don’t feel excited by this M1 iMac when they first set it up. The logo is the emotional connection the customer has with a brand. Especially for long-term companies like Apple. It’s that little Apple logo that sparks the delight n the brain. And it’s missing. Imagine a Mercedes without its badge on the front.

    • @sophiedodsworth

      @@sophiedodsworth Thank you for your reply, Sophie. I've just tried turning the Force Click off, which I didn't realise I could do! But the taps are still hit and miss. I'll play around with that some more.

      Thank you, Rob. But I had yet another issue with the iMac. The screen was too high for me as I use reading glasses on my nose bridge for close-up reading, and was crunching my neck back to read the screen. I sent the iMac back and bought a fabulous space grey refurbished 16” M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, etc. Didn’t cost me much more, and it’s fabulous! I turned off the deep click thing on the trackpad. The speakers are AMAZING!! And the wonderful 16” display still lets me have two apps I need open side by side. Plus it’s very portable for me around the apartment. The 24” screen was great on the iMac, but this 16” one is just as good for me on my own, and I can get a large external display for this later. So I’m happy now, and don’t need a mouse.

    Things I hate about new iMac 2021
    - 2 usb C ports for base model???
    - ARM Macs (New Macs) aren't supported with some softwares, but intel is
    - only a 24 inch iMac? kinda sucks
    - only 1 fan for the base model iMac so you might get performance loss
    - No bootcamp, due to ARM Macs you can't install windows anymore, this is mainly Microsoft's problem to deal with not apple.
    optional:
    - white bezels (I personally don't really care but some people would)
    - apple makes you buy it online if u want upgrades such as ram
    btw I use the iMac everyday, to combat the limited ports I used a usb hub on amazon. also white bezels pretty much blends in with the environment so you aren't really going to notice.
    (I don't do heavy stuff but I kinda do hate the 1 fan even though it might not be affecting me a whole much lol)

    A very nice review, with some interesting details I hadn't picked up anywhere else.
    I have the 2019 5K midrange iMac, and I have to say that 24 inch iMac is looking very tempting. A big advantage of the current 27 inch model is the user-replaceable RAM, very easy to do without tools by opening the hidden slot in the back. It means you can buy it in the base 8 GB RAM configuration and upgrade it within warranty to whatever RAM amount you need at a much lower cost than Apple would charge. I upgraded mine to 24 GB. This is likely the last iMac model ever to have user-replaceable RAM. Especially for audio and video production this can make a big difference. The 24 inch tops out at 16 GB of RAM, and it must be included at order time, so it will run out of headroom for memory intensive workloads sooner. Still, if you're the kind of person that needs a lot of RAM, you tend to know who you are. So I agree with your advice that everyone should just get the 24 inch.

    • @sophiedodsworth
      @sophiedodsworth  3 роки тому

      Thank you, Joeri! That’s a good point about the replacement RAM, and something a friend pointed out to me when I originally bought the 27-inch iMac. Like you said, those people who need a lot of RAM generally know who they are! Do you think the rumoured iMac Pro might be something you’d be interested in?

    • @sophiedodsworth
      @sophiedodsworth  3 роки тому

      Hi there! I've used Final Cut Pro to edit on both iMacs and I've noticed that Final Cut is faster and more responsive on the 24" M1 iMac. Final Cut crashes on me probably 2-3 times whilst editing a video on the 27" iMac, whereas it's only done this once on the M1 iMac. The experience feels smoother on the M1 iMac, but editing on the 27" is still very much doable and is how I've edited all my videos on UA-cam other than my last two videos. I hope that helps!

    One thing to be careful about is how long these iMac 27s will last after Apple finally phases out intel-based architecture and goes totally Apple silicon way. What Apple did with PowerPC Macs in 2006 is a great example for us to be a little more careful about buying Intel-based Macs from Apple now.

      @@sophiedodsworth 90% of Apple's customers go for the looks and aesthetics of Apple machines whereas the remaining 10% actually make money with these machines (because they are content creators); therefore, Apple might prolong support for Intel Macs. I recently bought a 21.5 iMac (Early 2019) for $999 from Best Buy, but I returned it thinking that it will be 1-2 years to the curtain on Intel iMacs after iMac 27s get a facelift and a transition to Apple silicon. However, based on my experience with the 4K retina display, I would go for one of these Intel iMacs (a used one though < $500) in the future and convert it into a Linux machine. I am sure that there are beautiful Linux operating systems out there that would certainly "pop" on the 4K display.

Currently, I am not a power user (no video editing, no audio creation, and no graphics design) therefore, prefer to buy older models of Apple's desktop systems. If buying an All-in-One computer in May 2021, I would just pick-up a used discontinued space gray Intel iMac Pro model. Why, because it now has a much lower price, USB "A" ports, Thunderbolt ports, SD card reader, 1080p web camera, and 5K monitor, plus you are able to still use a later version of the OS X operating system to run older software.
