Larkin doesn't deserve to be called out, it's just the nature of being captain.
Todd said it best -"It looks like Larkin carrys a lot of that weight on his shoulders, I've got to find some other guys who are willing to put that on themselves and it starts with me. You can ask me those questions".
Larkin has never put that burden on anybody else or had anybody else offer to take some of that pressure of him until now.

Larkin takes every media availability after a loss and rarely takes them after a win. I can imagine that's a pretty draining approach given how often the team has been losing lately. I think it shows some character that he wants to shield folks from it and take responsibility, but it also shows that the team is lacking in leaders who can share that burden with him.

They've been unlucky more than a few times with free agent signings to warrant their pro scouting being put to question. Also kinda confusing to me that they said after last season they needed to improve defensively and that's the style they want for the team long term then they sign Kane, Tarasenko, Gustafsson, and other guys not known for their defensive game. I get they were trying to recover the scoring from players they let go, but in doing so they built a team that doesn't match the identity they want to have at all then wonder why guys who play an offensive style game that you're also making play on their offside are struggling to adjust. And to make matters worse these guys who don't play a defensive game are not scoring, so they have a team that basically sucks at everything except the powerplay and miraculously goaltending. It remains to be seen on some of his draft picks, but so far his picks are looking promising. Especially considering this team couldn't even get a number 1 pick when they had one of the worst seasons ever.

Not every move is going to be a hit. He has done a lot more good than bad. Far too many people have unrealistic expectations and thought as soon as Yzerman was hired then all of a sudden he was going to magically turn the wings around overnight. Every single season under Yzerman, the team has slowly moved up the standings. This is the first season that they have regressed and Yzerman addressed it. People need to calm down. He will get it sorted out.

    • @Nichaelas
      @Nichaelas 20 днів тому +2

@@ValhallaRaven Honestly if people look at it realistically he did turn things around. Went from 0 prospect pool to one of the best. My biggest gripe recently is that they need to run an offensive style with the team they currently have. They are not built for a defensive system. They are long term, but most of the guys a part of the long term defensive plan aren't there yet. If they wanted success now they needed to pick guys to sign that were a better fit or accept they can't run that system right now.

Team Wings is undersized especially on the offense side, as a group they also lack speed, toughness isn't remotely visible with a few exceptions, this is illustrated when opposing teams stand around our goalies during and after scoring chances. Many players won't engage in checking let alone finish a check. 82 games played against men who out weigh you by 20 - 35 lbs. and by size can shield the puck will win 90% of the battles reason Wings are last in the league with 5-on-5 play. The fix is complicated, how long should a rebuild take, only the owners can determine that answer.

in what way exactly? Considering the habs made the cup final in 2021 I guess you’d have to say their rebuild started the next season. They already had several of their big pieces in the system or on the active roster, like caufield and Suzuki. Since 2019 both teams have drafted really well, with Montreal having a 1st overall and two 5th overalls, meanwhile Detroits highest pick is a 4th. Both teams have improved in points every season to this point with both being somewhat disappointing this year compared to their expectations. Both teams have fired a coach mid season. And despite the canadiens being younger now, it sure hasn’t seemed to matter in standings being only 3 points apart from each other. I don’t understand why the importance of a checking line..or even just a checking/energy player is never brought up. The Wings play scared a lot of the time because there is nobody on the team to stick up for anyone if players on the opposing teams are taking liberties. Mo does a great job of providing hits and energy but he shouldn’t have to be the main player doing that. Even if the Wings made it to the playoffs with their current roster..they would be obliterated in the first round when the other teams really start playing physical! I’m tired of seeing them bullied and pushed around and taken advantage of. And it seems like nobody is even thinking about this.🤦🏻‍♂️

This has been a problem since 09 up till now, look if the standard is the Florida Panthers, & before them the Tampa Bay Lightning then when it comes to being physically up to other teams bulling then the Wings have some more drafting and mind conditioning to do. Hiring Todd is a step in the right direction if I can recall his SJ teams always were gritty and physical in fact the main reason the Wings didn’t win more cups in the 2000‘s was because they didn’t have an official enforcer to keep teams from bullying our star forwards and defense man . I always thought it was because Babs wanted the team to be a team that simply used its skating and passing ability to out shine their more thuggish or rugged opposition ie Nashville, Calgary, Anaheim , San Jose, Colorado…. West Coast , East coast Boston, NJ, Philly,Tampa, Florida, … Bashill & Lalonde I since continued that legacy of turn the other cheek hockey well I say it’s about time this team rediscover it’s physical roots with likes of Probert, Kocur, Shannahan ,Konstantinov,Verbeck, ….

It doesn't matter that the future heart of the team is plowing their way through the AHL regular season and is poised to make a serious run in the playoffs. Everybody wants this to be like football or basketball where two or three key signings or a virtually infinite pool of talent can turn you into a dominating force and doesn't care that the kind of skills hockey players need take time to blossom. No one is taking Holl, Petry, Chiarot or Copp, meanwhile giving away Walman for free (was to me) the straw that broke the camels back. Walman is a solid top 4 defender (maybe on a really deep team an incredible top 6 D option), giving him away for nothing while keeping plugs like Holl and Chiarot is just ridiculous. Larkin deserves a little bit of heat; but Yzerman needs to do a better job at surrounding his stars with actual defenders and depth forwards rather than signing guys like Holl and Chiarot who were made fun of by their former team’s fans for being sooo bad. As a Toronto resident; the Holl contract still amazes me; I wonder what kinda threats Holl’s agent had to tell Stevie Y to get him to offer that much…

It generally takes 3-5 years for drafted players to arrive in the NHL unless they are very high end talent. Then another couple seasons to become bona fide established players. Top end rookies generally score about 60 points in their first season. Sure there are exceptions but only few operate outside of this. If a team gets 2-3 nhl players in a draft it is considered good. With this understood, the pace to rebuild a roster with 10-12 drafted players could certainly take 8-11 years. None of us likes this timeline but without draft lottery luck, this is the reality. Perhaps it is time to reconsider the concept of building through the draft.

Yzerman's drafts have been great. Frustrating as it might be with free agency and trades....draft building takes time. My take in Larkin....he is not the leader Stevie, Nick, or Z were. The HC is responsible for team effort and cohesion, but so is the Captain. I see Larkin take shifts off and then there are signs of brilliance. He is an above average player with superstar expectations that he just can't live up to. He doesn’t take over games or shut players down. I know he is a true-blue Wing/Hometown guy everyone loves....but the responsibility that he has had to take on is too much. I also think that early on he had an arrogance issue that has gotten slightly better, but hinders him as a leader. I would like to be wrong about this, but I don't think I am.

Screw yzerman.. this is the first time in 6+ years that any member of the media has asked him any type of tough questions and he gets defensive and chippy with them. This roster construction, and the overall poor play of the team rests firmly on his shoulders. Hes the one who signed a roster full of do nothing vets to immovable contracts. You wanna know what i would've done differently Steve. Not sign copp to 5x5.7 and not signed conoher to 5x5.2. Oh i also wouldnt have signed chiarot to 4x4.7. Dont forget that genius move of attaching a 2nd round pick to walman to give him to the sharks. Yep... wouldnt have done that either. I hope the he sees the same fate as newsy at the end of this season. Done with yzerman in Detroit

DONT THROW OUT THE BABY WITH THE BATHWATER. Spoiled fans who don't remember/ were alive for the early 90s. The core pipeline is STACKED. From the same fans who were jumping off a bridge over the Stafford Goff trade, when it was known it would take at least a few years. Hockey takes three times as long, good free agents don't just come into the market cheap, or even fair priced. Larkin Seider Raymond signings are legendary GMing, this season was never supposed to be a run.. look at the salary cap room next year, the increased cap on top of that, and who will be available combined with Danielson, Cossa Talbot, and ASP. CALM DOWN

I think the problem rests with the current roster and chemistry, more than coaching or leadership. They all play a role, but this current team lacks "so much" offensively and defensively. Ultimately, the roster is the responsibility of the GM and ownership. McLellan is going to need some help from the front office to be able to turn things around.

Steve has made some bad trades, but there isnt an endless pool of players to trade for.
I will put up with a few bad seasons, if it gives us another 10-15 yrs of greatness like we had.

Larkin never struck me as the captain type. He is good, but his personality doesn't jive with being a captain. The Wings have been screwed by the draft over and over. I don't care for the veteran signee's...but just like the draft...you can only sign/draft the available players. The development of the kids takes time. The next couple seasons are going to be crucial, alot of kids should be coming.

  • @xtremefight

Larking definitely needs to be called out take away the C. The problem is that the vets brought in (Kane and Tarasenko) are basically beta personality types and the younger guys really need someone or something to latch on to. This team has no identity. I watch this trainwreck every game and I don't have a clue other than maybe a bunch of listless guys skating around aimlessly is who they really are.

Steve Y is the reason this team is bad. The FA and Trade he made have just about been all bad. He has not addressed the defense for years. He trade or let go r 3 best defense man witch where not great but way better then what we have. All his trade for Goalies have not work but I did like those trade when he made them. We have Cobb Ras Veleno Comper motto and Fisher all the same players. Cobb and Comper r a waste of money Ras and Veleno have not taking many step forward think they r a bust Fisher is the best on and worth the money. There r 7 to 8 players that we can't even give away because no one wants bad players. The draft has been ok but he has pick alot of players just like the 5 guys from above. It time for Steve to move up and give someone else the GM job. He a great job in Tampa but a bad job in Detroit

Besides, watch Larkin. Id take his C from him and give it to someone who gives a damn. I'd put my money on Raymond, Seider, Edvinsson, before Larkin any day.

This year he's looked off I'll concede, but I don't think it's been lack of effort more trying to do too much and frustration . Hopefully the coach change brings the old Larkin back.

Maybe if this fanbase actually knew how a rebuild works they wouldn’t have been pressuring Yzerman to make the playoffs just to get bounced in the first round. Then maybe he wouldn’t have tried plugging a bunch of holes in a sinking ship with slow middle aged free agents. We should have been tanking for bedard, celebrini, hell we could have even gotten demidov at 5 this year. Instead we’ve been drafting a bunch of two way guys outside of the top 5. This team is cursed.

This article if full of wrong assessments; sieder hasnt been the greatest this season. From the start, he has been giving about 80%, and has cost us more goals this season than he has in his career.
At the red carpet event this yr, mo is the ONLY player that didnt sign 1 autograph, he dissed an 8yr old who made a sign written in german and waited 3 hrs to see him (he was impossible to miss). Mo literally speed walked the red carpet- his play so far this season has been a mirror image of the way he treated ALL the fans at the event.
The whole team is to blame, and im sure it starts at the coach.
