Ken Wallis was an inventor and aviation pioneer. Among his many achievements he developed the autogyro and it became his passion. He built at least 18 and kept them in a hangar in the grounds of his Norfolk home. He flew 'Little Nellie' as the stand-in for Sean Connery who was James Bond in the film 'You Only Live Twice'. In my youth I marvelled at his skill when, at air displays, he would throw the autogyro around the sky. In middle-age I watched him again, now 84, do the same thing. He was an inspiration and one of those people who helped put the 'great' into Great Britain.
Ken Wallis was the epitome of professional aviation pioneering spirit! His contribution to the autogyro is embedded in history and he is a true British legend!!!!! R.I.P Sir, you will never be forgotten.

He was an absolute legend and a real surreal gentleman. We were very fortuante a few years ago to visit his collection with a few other classic car enthusiasts. My Dad and I took our Humber Super Snipe and it performed faultlessly. He even showed me part of the Mid Norfolk Railway!!! I was very impressed with his collection and even Ken brought out one of his Autogyros for us and he did a flypast!!! Absolute gentleman and he will be sorely missed by many who knew him.
What a great man who came from a family who was involved in early aviation. Have just been reading of the 1910 Bleriot his father and Uncle built and the replica that Ken built and flew in 1980.
I met him around 1976 I was a welding apprentice with BOC Murex in Waltham Cross we were welding a Rolls Royce aero engine for him very interesting man great character

Because he can fly them properly ;)
If you look carefully around 3:20, you'll see several gyros that have horizontal stabilizers. He was building before they were common, and also after. He had flown many many hours without them and I suspect they provided a smaller increase in safety than it would for a less experienced flyer, or someone who flew less frequently, or for a gyro that had a greater thrustline offset than his did. Commander Wallis's gyros seem pretty close to centerline thrust, much more so than gyros with low seats and big props.
Nice guy but nicer if he had share his design with other gyrocopter fans
