Great video! That world championship winning shot by Miles is just superb. However I must shout out to Ota. That guy at the world championships was just on another level that day. Gutted I did not get to follow his career as a fencer.
Thank you! Ota was such an amazing fencer who paved the way for the rise of the Japanese foil team. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and looking forward to making more!
1:05 after seeing it quite a few times, I must say that it's pretty much an epee fleche counterattack. To think it happened in foil says something about the difference in meta between nowadays foil and 2008 foil and something about Ota's speed
Old boxing (pugilism) came from old swordsmanship as opposed to fencing as you see it here. The comparison to make really is between Classical Pugilism and Rapier fencing (not modern olympic as you see here as it's very different). Really modern fencing and modern boxing are not directly related, but compared to each other as their historical predecessors were related. Modern fencing evolved as a sport from smallsword fighting, which evolved from rapier fighting. Modern boxing evolved as a sport from old bare knuckle puglislm over the years, from what was orginally a full martial art and form of street defence. The way pugilism and rapier were connected was that they used the same physics of the arms crossing over each other in the way that the blades did (which historically were rather heavy, and no way would a person do a thrust as fast as you see in modern foil fencing, hence why the old boxers would have slower jabs and sometimes with with lunges as it came right from the old rapier lunge and were more "power centric" than speed centric ).
@@Mr-Tibbster No. That's actually bullshit, Boxing was highly influenced by fencing but didn't originate from fencing. That's just a dumb myth which makes really zero sense.
I do foil fencing and it always astonished me that even in slowmo the touches are hella fast. I don’t think about it when k get touched, it’s kind of weird in a way, you plan your attacks but you just do things that u don’t think of; it’s kind of funny in a sense tho 😂
My reply is little late but whatever. I'd say the main contributing factor is that fencing is so much of a thinking game. Yes, the action is incredibly fast paced, but what really wins bouts is figuring out your opponents weakness. Because of this, whenever there's a new top guy, everyone will be analyzing him to find a weakness. That means it's really hard to stay at the top spot for too long, unless you're constantly learning, improving, and changing.
I wish I would’ve did fencing 🤺 I’m a lifelong wrestler and was pretty good. But man I would’ve really been great with this hip and mental acuity of the “action - reaction” / anticipating the next move that makes grappling one of the best sport s
well id say motorsport requires much much more tech but thats cheating lmao. out of any bodysport yeah its the highest tech, i heard they just used dye on the end of the swords which sounds insane to try and track with your eye
It's a great sport only the swords are a joke. It's like a fly swatter or a rubber sword! They should not be able to bend that much where you can literally slap around a parry.
I like fencing but I'm cheating, the blade is too flexible, that's not real fencing, the blade had to be 50% more rigid. That's why I don't do Olympic fencing, I do traditional fencing from the year 1600
The only thing that i really hate about fencing is how they rip their masks from the faces every single time. Can't stand this. Reminds me somehow of soccer player who try to simulate a foul. Don't know why but this is the first picture i get in my head.
Pedro García de Zúñiga Canivell If you respect the opponent you will never win. What do you mean disrespect for the gear? That makes no sense it's like saying you can't sit on a chair because you're squashing it.
Respect hasn't got any concern about fear or doubts, is more about etiquette and courtesy. Lack of respect with the show after a hit, lack of respect throwing away your gear after a hit. The mask is intended for protect your face, why you throw it like garbage?Yes, it's the adrenaline, the emotion.... Then you have turn fencing in no more than a sport.
Itachi Uchiha If you’re a foilist then you have to be familiar with Valentina Vezzali. At one of her clinics, she said that “she respects all of her opponents the same and fenced them all equally.” Vezzali has won more golds and medaled individually than I can even list here... So saying that you’ll never win if you respect your opponent is obviously wrong. Lol.
I respect my opponent in the sense that I treat them like they're an equal. But I don't respect them during the bout. I hit with full speed and strength and not half-hitting because I respect them.
Obviously you don't fence.... The mask throwing is part of the celebration! If you win the Olympic Gold Medal and walk away like it's not big deal then why even fence? Celebration is part of fencing.
if any of these superb athletes picked up rapier I guarantee you that within a few practice sessions of adjusting to how the weapon works they would trounce any hobby HEMA goer
@@Goreblender They have got to learn right of passage, olympic fencing went to the dogs when it became nothing more than who can thrust faster, never used to be that way. That won´t work with rapier cause all you´ll get is doubles and i hate double hits in any fencing system.
The last second clip is my favorite because the beauty of simple parry and riposte

Fencing is like the jab in boxing, but it's super jabbing & with a sword. And I know boxing got its jab from fencing.

My coach (started with him when he was 85 years old!) used to say "Fencing is like chess, but VERY fast"
Fencing is like weeding your garden

does anyone know what makes fencing a different sport than others in the way it seems to me that no one can dominate this sport for more than 2 yrs?

At every point to celebrate, I think this is disrespectful, as well as unsportsmanlike.

Something I very dislike from fencing is the lack of respect for the oponent and the own gear. Otherwise, great technique and reflex.
