Hello again Dave, this is a followup on a comment I made a few days ago. I received this Hemel and low and behold, the Seagull movement acted up the first 3-4 days. It would lose 4-5 hours in a 24 hour period. I have other Seagulls with this movement and never had any issues. To my surprise on the 5th day of my possession all the issues cleared up on their own. I love this watch because of build and looks. I have a couple gmt 4 hand watches but prefer the 12 hour bezel because at a look at a glance I can see the two time zones. Thanks for your great reviews....
I bought this watch myself and I’m very pleased. It definitely needs a bigger crown so I can wind it without losing feeling in my fingertips as I try to wind it up.
Funny, there must be a new white panda dial with much stronger lume, it did extremely well in one of Jody’s Lume Wars episodes on Just One More Watch. It’s a beautiful piece though, either way!
Thanks for pointing out the quirks of the movement Dave! Most, if not all, reviewers say the ST19 has quirks but never show them. I may cancel my order of the Airfoil for this reason - I have enough quirks to deal with on my 7750/7753 watches. LOL.
I wish he touched more on the gorgeous casing, beautiful domed crystal, and fit n finish of this watch. Its just a good looking watch. I like it visually more than my Hamilton khaki king and seiko sports 5
Great review again! I've one of these. It was one of my first micro brands. I agree that the crown needs to be bigger, say an onion style which would also be authentic vintage pilot. I also agree that the bezel should be bi-directional. I haven't had the problems with the second hand jumping when starting the chronograph. Finally while the fully lured dial is cool, the hands tends to disappear against the dial in the dark since they are similar colour. But for looks and pretty exhibition movement the watch is great value for money. I've put mine on a NATO strap from Barton that has black and orange stripes. It suits it, making it even more vintage looking.
When I saw this, I went and grabbed my ST to see if I could recreate the slippage when starting the chrono and.... Nope. I pushed it as slow as I could and it started with a definite click every time. I think you got a bum movement there. I'm not sure if that's endemic to the ST.
Same here - my ST works a charm with a definite click every time. So it's not a design flaw in the ST19 (it would be strange, that movement is almost 80 years old), but it looks like there is some QC issue somewhere down the supply chain.

Mine is a lemon, too, and if you saw his reviews of some other watches using the movement, you can see the specific issues with his copies. Mine will sometimes run down and stop completely if the chrono is started, paused, then left paused without being reset; or else it just keeps on running with both the chrono second hand and small seconds when the chrono hand shouldn’t. I’m responding to the thread because his experience matches mine, where as you two responded because it was at odds with your experiences; the point remains, the quality control is variable on these movements, so buyer beware.
This looks amazing! I’ve always been a fan of Type 20s and was lining up to purchase an affordable one in the Mathey-Tissot Type 21 Flyback, but was on the fence about the quartz movement on that one. I’m so glad you introduced this Hemel to me!
Tissot has a great SUB $400 mechanical chronograph movement. The ETA Caliber C01.211. I have a Tissot T-Navigator with that movement. Many models with that low cost entry movement.
Very good looking watch! I like the vintage coloring aesthetic of this one. I have yet to own a 12-hr bezel, seems like a really nice function to have.
You can use the Dan Henry 1945 Chrono the same way to track times up to 12 hours as well as a second time zone it is very cool to see the same thing here if in a different iteration
Really cool watch, but in addition to your concerns, I would have preferred a darker handset to offer more contrast to the lighter dial color. The white hands look nice, but I think a black handset (at least framing around the hand lume) would improve legibility a lot. Or even something with a little pop of color, like a burgundy. That would look great with these colors, I think.
Hello Dave, I am excited about this mode because I have been eyeing the Hamilton Panda but would rather not spend that much. This watch is a perfect fit. I had a 38mm seagull and now have a 40mm Seagull and haven't t had a single problem. Thanks for the heads up.....
Great looking watch and great video. I get the racing look you refer to. The first time I saw this, I thought it was more racing inspired than pilot inspired. The 12 hour bezel adds to that (lots of other similar watches have a tachymeter which would make it more pilot-ey). I'd love to get one and put it on an old Daytona style strap. I think it would look great.
Oh man, this watch looks SO GOOD. The case back is amazing. But those quirks of the jumpy hands would drive me crazy. I would buy it if it weren't for that.

Excellent video... I prefer the newer designs with the BI-COMPAX text and red minutes counter, but I can't believe they continued with that thin crown... Should be a wider screwdown in my opinion - Kill two birds with one stone as it were. Maybe the next. next version? Keep it up. Love your videography and quick concise content.
That looks really cool. Nice clean design, yet visually interesting as well. I've become much more a fan of bi-compax chronos. Very odd with the chorno jump. So far I haven't seen that.

I kind of think this may have been better with black hand set.. maybe even high polished to catch dark reflections. generally not a fan of light hands on light dials. And, agree, bezel should have been bi-directional. Other than that, a great spec'ed watch at competitive price
Hmm, I think I'd prefer it in a quartz... they do have a mecha quartz version so that's interesting. But competing with the but at that price it competes with the bulova. not sure it is up to it but the 12 hour bezel is certainly a welcome addition since almost no one uses a tachometer.
1:31 - - Quirks & Complaints... I have this watch and have only 1 complaint: Though the crown is a decent diameter; it is WAY TOO THIN for those of us with larger fingers/thumbs making it challenging to wind. It should be 2x as thick or use an onion style.
Hey Dave! Could you make a video talking about the issues you've encountered with the ST-19 seagull movement? I'm interested in learning what's going on with those, as I'm considering getting the classic 1963 38mm... The movement just looks so beautiful!!!
I did a comparison video between two ST-19 movement watches where I talked about the issues that one of them had. The other was working fine. So I'd int think every one has problems, but they seem to have a much higher rate of problems than other popular movements in this price range.
Beautiful watch Dave. Question about the movement. I have my eye on one from Aliexpress with the seagull movement, one option is with gooseneck regulator and one without. What does the gooseneck Reg do and is it worth the extra for it? Thanks for the awesome review as always m8!
It makes it easier to regulate the movement. So probably not something you'll use yourself, but possibly may mean it'll be better regulated from the factory, ot after a service.

Excellent design, it includes different concepts Rotating bezel - about 3 mm thick - 12 hours - outstanding Numbers instead of markers - proper of pilots - the way to go - numbers bring character - they are also distinct by themselves - greeeat Light color dial - to flower in front of you - wonderful Dave, the only issue .. G-d! How did they allow you to receive a piece that could be classified as defective? Im talking about the chronograph , when you get it to start... big mistake by the brand.. pleeease!.. unacceptable.. If they get that corrected , at that price, they got it right... no doubt
Is it just me or does the video seem a bit fuzzy when Dave is on screen? It seems to be less sharp around his head. The watch btw is quite nice, I like the color combination.
This one has higher water resistance, a generally more solid feeling build and a nicer boxed sapphire crystal. But value wise, Chinese brands pretty much always beat out everyone else.
@@JusttheWatch I did not know Hemel was a Chinese brand....I always thought they were british from the sound of the name....the circular markers alongside the numbers are a bit off putting to be honest.
Is it a chrono without fraction of a second markers? No its no more functional than a second hand on any watch, ok so a minuite counter but thats it,especially a pilots chrono ffs. Its a tchoke, a chrono type toy, pretty but not a functional chrono. This is a real triggering for me.
It does have fraction of a second markers. They're a bit hard to see because of the boxes sapphire crystal. But the movement on this one is acting up and doesn't sweep smooth enough to reliably record fractions of a second.

I have the black dial version of the watch. Really solid watch. I can attest to the crown problem. It's a bit difficult to wind with the narrow crows.

My relationship with my ST19 is similair to Han Solo's relationship with the Millennium Falcon Its the coolest hunk of junk I own

It's something that shouldn't happen, but if it does I'm sure Hemel would take care of it. Not all st-19 movements have issues like this.
I've had my HFT 20 for a couple of years now, and Hemel I definitely rock solid...glad I watched this video tho...need a new one.

Not sure if Hemel updated the spec, I just purchased a model, the line is powerful and the bezel is bi-directional!!
I just got one from there site and it's not bi directional
Hemel also use VK64 movements = 1 hour dial rather than 30 minute. Styling is just as good. They don't seem to have a black on white panda though.
My Seagull 1963 has the same issue with the stuttery chronograph hand

The Alpha Moon Watch at $180 kicks this thing to the curb. It is a snappy column wheel chrono, with no issues.

The swan neck regulator is missing the screw.

Basically the same Seagull/Sugess/Merkur chrono but for twice the price of the original. Or am I missing something?

$450 for an intermittently correctly functioning chrono that is $200 from China sellers. No.
Dude, I love your videos, BUT, the only thing the background music does is make it more irritating and difficult to hear you.
7&1/2" wrist and you're on the 3rd hold of the strap. Not suited at all for people with less than 7" wrists 😶😅
