    Not exactly what I was expecting, but par for the course with classic cars. Fix one thing, another breaks!

      I'm from beautiful southern AZ, home of millions of rattle snakes and billions of killer bees (keeps the "riff raff" out plus 115 degrees in the summers), lucky for us to be in God's country! LOL. Me especially for collecting old cars, nice and dry here, except today; it's raining "cats and dogs"!! LOL ;D

    Same thing happened to me after I installed my new cooling system and kind of tested the limits of how close you can mount the fan hub to the radiator. The reason it made contact was worn strut rod bushings - after all, they're supposed to restrain front-to-back movement under braking.

    WOW! What a SWEET installation on those brakes! Wilwood did a great job engineering on that kit. A couple more comments: 1) It is my understanding that stopping distance is more a function of tire adhesion than brake performance. The big advantages to disc brakes are directional stability (a slight difference in drum brake adjustment can cause pulling to one side or the other), and resistance to "brake fade" under repeated hard stops. The drums expand from the generated heat, causing the slave cylinders to travel farther to engage the drums. Not an issue with discs.
    2) You DO know there are disc kits to upgrade Corvairs, right?

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy  Рік тому

      Great point. Good drums will stop a car as good as discs, once or twice. But repeated use will cause drums to fade.
      I’d love to put discs on the Corvair at some point!

    I would shop around for a new radiator, one not so thick. Don't you hate it when a "replacement" part has diff dimensions?

    • @AutoAnatomy

      It certainly is thicker than the original, hoping we can get some answers soon.

    Check your trans mount: something is making that fan hit the rad. I could do it again. Great work though. thanks

    The speed limits were higher in the 60's. It was ronnie raygun that pushed the 55 crap.
    Montana didn't have a limit and a lot of states were 75 and 80.. cool car.

      Old Jimmah did the "enforcement" of the 55 thing, after he was jerked around by Opec, and every other dictator in the world, in the 70's gas "shortage". I personally recall those days, had an old F-100 with dual tanks, 20 and 25, for the range, but never drove 55 , no sane person did that back in the day, especially down here in "miles and miles of lonely, straight as an Apache arrow, roads", Arizona. LOL. Re-read your history,... or just try to Live it, like I did!! LOL ;D

    • @AutoAnatomy

      It’s a Wilwood disc brake conversion. I don’t have the part number off hand, but could get it if needed.

    • @ronschlorff7089
      @ronschlorff7089 Рік тому

      Summit has them and also for 4 lugs if needed. If you have a four lug, for safety, you need to rebuild the entire front-end suspension to get a 5 lug to convert. Both kits are grand plus but converting all suspension will be another grand, at least if you did it yourself, with friends, and that's not including the pizza (man has that ever gone up during 2 years of "Biden-omics"!!!) and beer (still cheap for "generic", I remember those during the peanut farmer Jimmy Carter days!! White can with the word BEER on it!! LOL) to pay them! LOL ;D

    Nice vid, too bad about fan/ radiator issue. Old car rules, fix one thing as you "brake" another, sometimes happens. Not even saying "bad words" will help!! I have a 64 Chero, (it was known, back in the day, as "a lousy car, and a worse truck") LOL. built by me and my friends over the years, and some shops. I paid with cash to shops and pizza and beer to the friends, LOL. It's a six, nice rebuild 200 to dead factory specs, so has the original brakes and 4 lugs. I did get the Willwood 4 lug kit to do some day, but the thing still stops well like yours did with the old drums. Did convert to dual master. And, I drove cross country twice when in the in the Army, 67-69, with my old 56 Belaire with drums so they do work well in "normal driving". Good tip on the A-arms and proportioning valve though, need to get those before attempting the conversion. Also need some good auto mechanic friend who likes pizza a beer!! Anyone in southern AZ interested!?? LOL. Meanwhile 1100 bucks in a box sits on the floor of my shop, neglected.
    About the fan clearance, maybe some mods, cut and paste, to the support may give you some clearance moving it forward the couple of inches I see there. Flex fan? Good luck, you'll figure it out, we all do in the end, but remember, saying "bad words" may help, they always did for me, sort of!! LOL ;D

    Hey Sean, Really like those brakes. I just installed a simulator radiator in my 66 chevelle. I had to bolt the fan to the pump first then slide the radiator in after. I also had to remove the spacer.

    Sean, the engine & tranny moved forward when stopping hard??
    Bad motor/ tranny mounts??
    Gee, I remember 65 MPH speed limits here on Long Island until 1974, but maybe lower speed limits on some parkways. Disc brakes are the way to go for these classic cars...

    I love the clarity of your videos and your delivery. I look forward to them. I guess the only thing that I would change - my preference is to see the work being done instead of you telling us what you just completed. In other words, it appears you are editing out the actual work. You probably do that to shorten the video. Regardless, thanks for your efforts. Much enjoyed!

    Hi Sean.
    The brakes look great. Why you don't grease the pads back and side to reduce noise and rust inside the calliper?
    If a motor comes forward while braking, the mounts of motor and gearbox are loose or slack.
    Try with an mounting lever to lift motor and gearbox to see if the mounts are really good enough.
    The new radiator seems to be a wrong one, it doesn't fit correctly.
    You have a new waterpump installed? Is this one higher than the old one?
    Good luck... 🤘👍❤️🙋‍♂️

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Joe, the motor mounts look perfect and I tried to make the engine move around but it's rock solid. Still not sure exactly what happened, but it WILL be fixed before putting in the new radiator.
      The engine has been replaced at some point with a 302, prob from the 70s so the front accessories are likely not original. I'm sure that is a big part of the problem.

    Great job on the brakes, I would still go back and inspect the motor mounts and maybe one of you do the old power brake method and see how high the engine lifts up, all the cars I've had never had one eat a radiator. Shouldn't be that much forward motion. And are you still planning on collaborating with Budget Builds on any projects?
