Ukraine frontline: Caught in terrifying firefight with Russian soldiers in front line trench

  • Dramatic video shows the Daily Mail's Richard Pendlebury and Jamie Wiseman coming under fire from Russian artillery while compiling a report on Ukraine's front line. The pair witnessed a firefight between Ukrainian troops and Russians who were just 400 metres away across no man's land, after they were given extraordinary access to a front line trench in the Donbas region. They also encounter a Russian drone - before their journey out of the trench almost goes disastrously wrong when a full-scale battle rages around them while they make their way through a treeline.

I'll say one thing as a US Marine infantry officer who served 21 years with 3 years in combat. The Ukrainian military have a set of huge titanium balls to conduct offensive operations when the Russians have had over a year to prepare in-depth defenses. I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69 and I know what it is like to go against prepared defenses. I know what it's like when the area is saturated with mines and booby-traps. I know how dangerous firefights are.
The biggest difference is that the Viet Cong didn't have anything more than 81 mm mortars but the North Vietnamese Army in had heavy artillery in the northern part of South Vietnam which was more intense and concentrated than what Russia has delivered and it was extremely effective.
During the 10 years of war in Vietnam, the US lost 68,000 Killed and at least 3 times that wounded. The US lost 8,540 aircraft and South Vietnam lost another 1,351 aircraft..
So in those 10 years, we lost about 6,800 men and women killed every year. We lost about 854 aircraft a year.
I'm 77 years old now. I'm still not sure how I made it through the year I was there without a scratch. When I came home, i was mentally and physically exhausted because we didn't get rotated out or combat. My platoon operated most of the time alone. We'd be in combat for 2-3 months at a time and then battalion would bring us back for 3 days of rest and hot meals. Then it was back out for 2-3 months.
I have the greatest respect for the Ukrainian armed forces. Being able to conduct offensive operations against a superior force is just awesome. I pray for your success.

The drone shows one style of view of the action and a reporter on the ground shows an entirely different view. 2 different things.
