Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I bought oil paints 11 years ago, and after a single painting (which actually looks quite good) I put them aside in the closet, afraid to "waste them" because of how expensive they were. so, 11 years I've been afraid to paint, until I came across your videos. you make it look so easy and intuitive, so I said "yeah, why not?"
I went to Rosemary and Co, ordered some brushes and linseed oil (and of course mentioned your channel in the comments) and I'm so excited to start! even if it's 11 years too late :)
meanwhile I take A LOT of photos of places around the house that I want to paint. parks, buildings, benches, interesting trees etc'
    wish me luck ;)

Im on same journey. After 6 months i am taking a break. Got a puppy and needed a break. I will get back in it. A lot more easily. I finally started a new painting every day but on 5 x 7” size. Its a pad too. In fact almost all my work is on pad oil paint paper but 12 x 12 or 14” . Florent Farges here on youtube is a good watch too

Whenever I'm doing a larger painting, especially if it needs layers I use the advice you gave me and I do quick one hour studies. It works great because I get warmed up, I go through the steps and I feel I completed something. Then I go paint the long tedious piece.

OMG! Everything you said is so spot on. I've been stuck inside a painting that took 2 months and I hated 95% of the time I spent on it, so it stopped me painting for ages. I've even been known to take a year or so off after one like that. Also the painting everyday is so so good. You learn way more than you think you will. I've done that for the last 6 weeks and learnt so much! It even improved my drawing. Mainly because I couldn't be bothered tracing etc it was quicker to just draw, we have erasers for a reason lol. Keep these paint talks coming they are so informative. I love them.

Hey 👋 Chris, I never heard anyone else say what I’ve said for the past 40 years, until I heard you say it in this video. I don’t hang my own paintings up because I would look at them and see what I could have done better. And that would bother me. Yet, I just ordered 14 frames online, for the 14 plein air paintings I painted last Spring. The frames are due to be delivered this week. I may finally have something I can live with on my walls… we’ll see how long they stay up there.

I have started with Bob Ross two years ago, then go to simple landscape tutorials, boat from reference photo, and jumped into portrait of my doughter. Its over the year im working on it, painted it last summer, poorly, then painted it all over and started year later. Now its unfinished but she is similiar to herself a litlle bit so im scared to even touch it. But man have to paint!
