Laphroaig has that Smokey peat taste due to their distillation process. Definitely an acquired taste. Blended Scotches have a less pronounced essence of that particular character.
This is a GREAT but really limited pedal. In addition to Jimmy Page using it for the solo on 'Fool In The Rain', it was also used by Jimmy McCullough (ANOTHER JIMMY!) during his stint with Wings on the solo to 'Wino Junko' from the 'At The Speed of Sound' album. I had this pedal then sold it. Wouldn't you know it, I bought another one. You can get better note tracking by placing a boost pedal in front of it. An overdrive or EQ works best.
To fix that volume issue, the "C11" mod, which adds a 0.01uF cap with one leg going to pin 1 of the volume pot and the other leg going to pin 3 of the volume pot fixes that. I made mine switchable, because both modes have there benefits. I also wired in the second half of the CD4013BE, which is responsible for the sub-octave. Tying in the second half of this flip-flop chip will change the double octave down to a single octave down. Again, I tied to a switch, so I can toggle between the two octave down modes.
I did the same thing to mine too. This pedal has been a main stay on my board ever since I got it and I have other pedals that can mimic it really well but something about it being borderline unusable is what has me keeping it. Plus using the Octosynth setting from a Line 6 FM4 in front of it can get some PLL sounds.
If it wasn't for the stranger sounds and tech guitars would get real boring real quick. Ultimately we're just making fun noises, so it's worth looking at everything.
This has quickly become my go to channel when I want to know anything about guitars, amps, pedals, and acoustic science. I’m a high school science teacher and I must say that you’re a gifted and talented educator. +1 for the VIC-20 reference... that was the first computer I ever owned way back in 1981! Love your channel and what you’re doing, brother! 🎸🔥
Love these. Derangfed fuzz that doesn't quite crap-out and glitch as severely as some of the other more "out there" fuzzes. Just the right amount of glitchy to stay musical in my opinion. Always enjoy your take on things too, so this video is GREAT.
You keep saying its glitching and its unpredictable... but your problem is you are running a Blue Box through an Orange amp.... the colors dont match.... fix that and it will be awesome.
I've made myself a few of these. I added a toggle to select between 1 and 2 octaves down, in addition to a (sorely lacking) sensitivity control, and a tone switch for the octave/suboctave to make it less raspy. As you note in passing, the "fuzz" part can handle chords, whereas the suboctave is purely monophonic. What many aren't aware of is that the pedal includes a very crude noise-gate-like function to gate out the suboctave and fuzz signals when the signal fed to the flip-flop chip (responsible for the suboctave) falls below the threshold required to trigger it properly. But yes, it is a decidedly *rude* pedal that makes no excuses for its temperamental nature. Any one wishing to have an octave/suboctave box that tracks flawlessly and rarely misbehaves should just go digital. This is a blissfully analog circuit with all of the "wait, I didn't see *that* coming!" entailed.
@@DoctorWhomThe1st Here is the Tonepad schematic for the Bluebox, that we'll use for reference purposes: i1166.photobucket.com/albums/q609/carlovanoni/bluebox_zpsl7hdnldj.jpg What's shown as R20 is the 50K Blend/Mix control. C9 provides some treble cut for the entire output - both suboctave and fuzz, but one can add even more treble cut at the junction between R16/R18 (for the fuzz) and R17/R19 (for the suboctave). All four of those resistors are 56k. If you run a 2200pf cap from the R16/R18 junction to ground, you'll roll off the treble on the fuzz side, starting around 1.3khz. It's a gentle slope so there will still be fizz, albeit at a much lower level. If that isn't enough for you, go for a larger cap value, like 2700pf. Because the suboctave side is much lower in pitch, you'd run a larger cap value from the R17/R19 junction to ground, like 3300pf or even 3900pf. Personally, I'm content with a simple 2 or 3-position toggle, not just because it is predictable, but also because there isn't tons of room in there and its simple to do. Let's use a 3-position on-off-on SPDT toggle. Identifying the relevant resistors might be tricky, but fortunately you can simply rely on where the Blend pot is connected to. So, you'd run a lead from the fuzz side of the Blend pot to the center lug on the toggle. Solder a 2200pf cap to one of the outside lugs, and a 3300pf cap to the other. Join their free ends, making sure to keep them appropriately short, and that they don't inadvertently short out against anything. Solder a wire from their joined ends to some handy suitable ground point, and there you go. Middle position is stock, and the two outside positions are moderate and heavier treble-cut. Let me know how that works for you.
I spent the spare part of my day playing through a Digitech Synth Wah into the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe (basically the octave side of the Blue Box with more knobs for the octaves, a dry blend and a mid push button) and out into some distortion thinking I’m some sort of noisescaping visionary. Colin finishes my day and triggers my gas in a big way with this beastie. I love this channel.
The speaker is the only part of the system generating sound, everything else simply manipulates voltage. So in the truest sense the speaker is entirely responsible for volume. you were right, this sounds like good fun !
Thanks for show me what pedal I should never use... I'm an overdrive/distortion fan, I respect others opinions but octave fuzz doesn't sounds as a guitar tone to my ears.
To hear the blue box at its best listen to Happy Birthday by the Birthday Party, nobody does it justice like Rowland S Howard did !!!
I was thinking about building this... but maybe not ... BOC & C64 FTW!
Talking about firebreathing pedals for gain appreciation with a firebreathing whisky like Laphroaig in the back.
I like it.
Blue box? more like Weird box. Fits better with single notes than cords though.
Amazing. I just did the C11 mod on mine the other day to boost the volume/treble.
Rowland S Howard
I just couldn't get a sound I liked out of it. Now the Poly Blue Octave on the other hand......
Always +1 "Godzilla". Oh, and that last end credit comment - No, no it isn't...
Did I spot a bottle of Laphroaig in the background? Only 10 years old?
I'm getting reeeaaal sick of those little jokes in the beginning Colin, don't fucking Johny Test me
MXR BlueBox (octave down) + Foxx Tone Machine (octave up) = a lot of fun!
Wait, maybe I haven't watch every single video. Who the F is Barry???
Nice vid! Have you tried the blue box black logo?
If I can make a Data Corrupter sing, I can make anything sound good.
the grand return of the background character !
Who's your favourite ? Barry or Yoda ?
I felt that enough time had now passed for Barry to be a fresh and exciting surprise.
He will return again in another couple of years.
@@ScienceofLoud like a comet in the sky, gone as fast as he came.
Farewell Barry, we'll have much to talk about next time we see eachother
I hate the fact that this pedal is quieter... jesus I have it ad i hate it...With no volume U cant use it
I read somewhere allegedly obituary used this don't know if it's true
I really want to run a bass through that and see what kind of demon I summon
I need to try the wah trick with a Boss OC-2.
Thanks for the idea.
Ohhhh nooooo there goes Tokyo, go go Godzilla. Fuck that’s a good song man
I have one. It's cool but totally sucks the clean tone.
I got one, most useless pedal I own. Thanks for reminding me to list it
I need to hear this on bass
it was also used by king buzzo of the melvins but he boosted it with a rat
Man that thing sounds horrible...I want one. 😜
Why is it that I just think "Paranoid" solo vibes from that thing?
Hi. Is this pedal good for the Melvins songs ? Thanks
Hey had you do me a favour next video and say breakfast at the end of it. Thanks
Tengo este y el regular , el script suena más nítido .
One of the rifs was Fu Manchu?! Right?!
