- this is a ThinkPad x61hk, there's less than 5 in the world AFAK. it's a x61 built with a 51nb x210 motherboard. I got it broken off of a forum, here's me trying to fix it

For those who don't know: James has a thing for old tech. You could say he might as well just buy a new laptop- he does have a 2020 MacBook (pro I guess). He loves old tech
technically this is a modern motherboard stuffed into an old shell
It is not old tech, tech is new but skins(chassis here) are old to get that feel

welcome back, I'm glad that you remembered your password
I bought a slew of 51nb boards when I could, and I'm glad I did. They become much more costly and difficult to source. Although in recent times I'm using a lot more modern tech (macbook M2 with thinkpad keyboard), I have enough spare parts for the X6* and X2** to keep those going for a lifetime. I lived most of my early professional life on a X61, upgraded to the 51nb board back in 2016. I took it out of storage to getting going away (just need to source some new batteries
)
Which thinkpad would you recommend a college student to purchase in 2023?

Eh, some laptops are designed like that on purpose, to make people buy new ones instead of trying to open and fix them. Mine is really hard to open as well..

what did he do actually? It's hard to follow from all the shaking and half finished sentences. Did he exchange any parts? Or did he just disassemble it, connected vga monitor, disconnected onboard screen, then got into BIOS, then booted into Arch, then connected everything back?
