It's a testament to the robustness of Gothic architecture that Notre-Dame did not fall despite the inferno. And to think, some people still call this period "the Dark Ages"!
Doesn't the dark ages refers only the period between the fall of the western roman empire until the "Carolingian" renaissance in the 9th century? That's far from being all the middle age. For the record, it was only named the dark ages because of the lack of written sources we had (until the 9th century). The 12th century brought a lot of changes in Europe, and many of the things we imagine about the middle ages actually comes from it (like Gothic cathedrals, the first human buildings higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza). The middle-age isn't just one unified period that lasted 1000 years, in Europe it can be separated to at least three main periods.

I would like to thank you for this video, and thanks everyone that is donating to help with the restoration. As a French it's very meaningful. I'm born in Paris, I've always lived in Paris and my heart broke when I saw the spire collapsing. Many won't understand why many of us cried for "a bunch of stones" but it's really something else for us Parisians. As a catholic, I was also very concerned the holy thorn crown would be lost, but fortunately it was saved !
Even to me as a Scandinavian atheist, I'm saddened by this disaster and wish it restored as well as possible. Even with your holiest relics saved, the value of the other art lost to the flames can not be measured in money, I am grateful for having had the privilige to visit the cathedral twice and both times humbled by it's greatness, and awed by the skill, dedication and genius of the artisans and builders who made it and it's priceless interior furnishings. All now living Europeans owe those medival craftsmen the duty to restore it.
It's not Just Catholics that were stunned by the loss. Even we baptists shed a tear when we saw the magnificent lady burning. She has contributed to a lot of history and most of us hoped to one day visit her and sit within her walls.
I have to say your French pronunciation is pretty damn good! Thank you for bringing some awareness to the Cathedral's great history after this tragic event. I felt bad for not having enough time to make a video about the Cathedral's history following this event so I'm glad to have something to refer people to if ever they ask me about it.
The greatest challenge Notre-Dame faces now is defacement. The French government just organized a competition for architects to design a new spire to replace the crossing. There are quite reasonable fears that the judges of such a competition will be biased towards a modern-looking spire. Now, even if you love modern architecture, we should agree that such a spire would disastrously deface the Gothic edifice.
Yep, it’s possibly gonna be rebuild to suit the visual feelings of leftie postmodernist “intellectual” snobs. It’s just gonna be replaced with some postmodernistic looking glass type ugliness which will just ruin the whole building all together if they do it, I just hope they rebuild it the way it originally was before the fire.
Such a shame to see so many ignorant people in the comments here. It's a beautiful building with such a rich history and of course it should be rebuilt.
Coral reefs are also beautiful and were not built by the church with such a rich history in the persecution of jews and gays and the institutional protection of child molesters. Let's rebuild some coral reefs instead. Or any bit of nature not perpetually destroyed by humans.

@@InvictaHistory I didn't really think you used it as a source; my comment was meant as tongue-in-cheek. ^^ Generally, Astérix seems to be visually and technologically pretty accurate, but it plays a lot on the modern-day stereotypes about the locations the protagonists go to. E.g. the Belgians invent fries, the Britons drink tea "with a cloud of milk", the Helvets are exceedingly calm, Lutetia has traffic jams (but with carts, not cars), etc. Plus most of the names are puns; actually, this makes me want to pick up an English edition just to see how they translated that.
Not mentioned is that when construction began around 1170-1180 the tall old-growth oak trees were already 300-400 years old. They were seedlings during the reign of Charlemagne. No current stock of oak that old exists in sufficient quantity to replace the roof as originally designed with long timbers for the vaulted roof. They will have to use something else.
mroldnewbie Ah, I see. There is no STOCK of oak trees on hand. But that's kind of irrelevant since there wouldn't have been a giant stockyard full of oak trees 800 years ago. They'll just have to cut down more.

Was Norte Dame sacrificed, burned intentionally to remove the focus from Macron's FAILURE to deal with the yellow vests and to push EU unity? The JEWEL of France can NEVER be rebuilt... the materials are no longer available on the Earth, the Artisans who created this building have been dead for centuries. 900 year old OAK beams in the attic, know as the "FOREST", were lost in the inferno... How can this be an accident? What's the rebuild plan, what could ever replace this Cathedral of all cathedrals?
As a Catholic from the US I also find it sad to lose a beautiful piece of history like this. I mean it's still pretty much there, but the wooden parts of the church. Have a blessed day brother.
One dont know who did worse atrocities on Balkans, Catholic empire or Islamic empire. Both forcibly assimilated people and gave their obedients land of non-converted, expelled local people. They even made new nations just to separate loyal from non-loyal people. Battle is raging more then 2.000 years, starting with Latin domination over RASseni (EtRUScians), and later German over Lusation Serbs, changing name of Lusitania, Jewish 1917 attack on RUSsia... Similar story from the Greek (E1b1b1 haplogroup Middle east immigrants) ortodox church and later Ottoman islam empire. Long story, but briefly, started from Greek and Latin alliance with parasitic, slavery ideology brought from outside Europe. Later they spread it all through the Western Europe and later even further to America, and elsewhere.

Weird how it caught fire, considering the renovations contained no Hotspots (wielding, open flames etc). Many other Cathedrals and churches in France have caught fire over the past several months too.

@Bloginton Blakley You are righteous to think so, however, on the state of mankind and his maker read what Jesus says to his disciples who criticise a woman for washing his feet. Mark 14:7 -8 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful deed to Me. 7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me. 8She has done what she could to anoint My body in advance of My burial.… Rebuilding the cathedral is a call to all who see here that God is not yet dead and thus have hope.
@Bloginton Blakley Nowadays, helping the poor is now the PERFECT get rich quick scam and there are facts backing that up. Just look at how many fake NGOs that arouse with that assumption.
@Bloginton Blakley you cannot remove the poor people completely. The only difference with the poor now and the poor then is that the poor now enjoy priviledges that even the rich prior did not have. The only difference is the standard of living of the poor now is indirectly influenced by the rich. Nobles of the eras prior cannot even afford to have good quality meat with salt in it, but the nearest dumpster nowadays has that with random fries to boot and an expiration tag in it. Also, remember that Jesus said a key verse to Judas Iscariot on the time Mary Magdalene broke an expensive perfume on her feet: you will ALWAYS have the poor, but will not have me ALWAYS. Jesus is more concerned of people believing in His Words as the Son of God and its propagation than the poor. Sorry but Social Justice just blinds your perspective.

Dear "Invicta": You've done an incredible job in presenting (in less than thirteen minutes no less!) the historical context and meaning of the Cathedral de Notre Dame--great coverage of the development of ancient Europe following the fall of the Roman Empire--yes, the Franks, created what would become modern France & brought culture, art, and political greatness. Especially wonderful is your coverage of the development of the architecture of this magnificent cathedral--you've really brought this building to life w/ interesting and obviously loving attention. This tragic fire just goes to show that buildings are deeply ingrained in our human experience of life. Thank you for an inspiring "visit" to history and the present!

It is really just so sad to see something that old surviving countless religious wars, culminating in the French wars of religion and the 30 years war, through the fanatics that brought in the French revolution, as well as two world wars just to catch on fire for some unknown reason in 2019. It's just baffling!?!?! Could it really just be an accident if Notre Dame managed to survive all these events of history only time will tell. I will say, though, in France countless churches almost as magnificent as the grand Notre Dame are being destroyed, vandalized, and lit ablaze by arsonists. Could Notre Dame be the culmination of this destruction of French history that I love so much or just an accident?? If it was the latter I would not even be able to put into words how unfathomably careless it would be to let something so horrid happen. It is also quite blood boiling to see all the celebration of this historic monument's destruction by many people over social media with people even taken pictures while smiling with Notre Dame burning in the background; it just makes me livid. All in all to sum it up France is dying from within all this vandalism, riots, destruction of history, and sky rocketing crime rate you can see it if you just take a moment to look but people seemed so blind to it all until this horror of Notre Dame burning resounded round the world to truly open people's eyes to the destruction of a once spectacular and wonderful French culture and Country.

Nah, he referenced Victor Hugo in the video, meaning he is likely to have read either "The hunchback of Notre Dame", "Les miserables" or both. If that's the case, he wouldn't dare to use such a presumptuous title for his little video; Hugo describe such minute details about the history of every road, intersection and building (even the ** sewers) that a lot of people get turned off for his constants ramblings tangential to the main story which essentially are a pretext to show long interludes describing his love for Paris and its history.
You cried for "bunch of stones" but not a single tear shed for the loss of the country
It's not Just Catholics that were stunned by the loss. Even we baptists shed a tear when we saw the magnificent lady burning. She has contributed to a lot of history and most of us hoped to one day visit her and sit within her walls.

Generally, Astérix seems to be visually and technologically pretty accurate, but it plays a lot on the modern-day stereotypes about the locations the protagonists go to. E.g. the Belgians invent fries, the Britons drink tea "with a cloud of milk", the Helvets are exceedingly calm, Lutetia has traffic jams (but with carts, not cars), etc.

Well now that the wooden roof is gone I'd like metal or concrete. No wood! Protect what's left.
Oak trees are oak trees aren't they though? What does the age matter? I'm not trying to be facetious, just generally curious.
mroldnewbie Obviously. So use the ones already large enough. I assumed that was implied, but I don't mind dumbing my comment down for you.
mroldnewbie Ah, I see. There is no STOCK of oak trees on hand. But that's kind of irrelevant since there wouldn't have been a giant stockyard full of oak trees 800 years ago. They'll just have to cut down more.

@Bloginton Blakley personally I think that if Jesus had the choice, he would rather rebuild the Temple of Solomon than a few houses for the poor 🤷🏻♂️
8She has done what she could to anoint My body in advance of My burial.…
Rebuilding the cathedral is a call to all who see here that God is not yet dead and thus have hope.

McOinky some would probably be from where France had once occupied and “built up”
Frankly, I found this video a great example of how to make something that should be interesting, extremely dull.
Great video my boy. You have her so much respect.
Proud to be a Catholic!
Pater Noster Pride- cardinal sin
allahu akbhar my brother.. but dont pray with statue.
We need to appreciate ancient history like this. Notre Dame was symbolic of western thought, and Christianity triumphing in Europe. I'm not catholic, but like any normal person I can appreciate the great loss of mideveal architecture and even spiritual reformation (victor hugo's the hunchback of notre dame). It IS a tragedy, and I'm not selfish for applauding the massive donations to it. I just hope they restore it and not redesign it.
With the announcement of a redesign competition, I worry notredame will be lost to history forever.
If we get some kitsch ugly monument to an egotistical little computer twerp who claims to be an "architect", there will more than likely be another fire!
Thanks for sharing this story. The history of Notre Dame is fascinating and your sharing this is important.
Lets pray to god that they restore the old tower instead of "refelcting our current diverse society"
This video was amazing, I really enjoyed it! Well done, keep creating!
I'm currently researching Notre Dame, I want to review the ideas surrounding restoration, comparing them with modern adaption, with reference to the architectural design competition for the new spire and roof. If you have any recommendations for material/ scholars for me to look at? Particularly Le Duc and John Ruskin. I'm looking for more conflicting opinions on the topic of what is best for Notre Dame :)
This video should have been titled "The history of Paris and Notre Dame"
Nah, he referenced Victor Hugo in the video, meaning he is likely to have read either "The hunchback of Notre Dame", "Les miserables" or both. If that's the case, he wouldn't dare to use such a presumptuous title for his little video; Hugo describe such minute details about the history of every road, intersection and building (even the ** sewers) that a lot of people get turned off for his constants ramblings tangential to the main story which essentially are a pretext to show long interludes describing his love for Paris and its history.
Seriously, Hugo's works are already in the public domain so go and download a free electronic copy from project Gutenberg and enjoy it.
