I would not say overlooked, she was a BIG name in the folk genre, but not in the bebop or jazz mainstream genre. Joan Armatradin, Tracey Chapmen, and others credit her as a guiding force for their sound. What a beautiful, gifted talented guitarist and singer-songwriter. She was AMAZING! This is such a GREAT video presentation. Now, her story would be a GREAT MOVIE for SURE!!! I agree with you Mr. Hornsby, "Thank You for this JOY!!!" : )

I had the honor of meeting Odetta at a benefit concert honoring Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Philadelphia. She really was a force of nature. So kind and gentle with an inner strength. She was a beloved person.

Odetta was everything all at once. I wonder if the audience knew they were listening to one of the greatest voices in this history of recorded music. And I wonder if they understood their complicity in the very systems of oppression she envoiced.
P.s. that is one of the most beautiful and wrenching renditions of The Water is Wide I've ever heard (and Ive heard many).

What ? Are you serious ? the idiocy of your comment is a proof that netflix did a good job on the masses in rewriting the story... do you know who is Toussaint Louverture or Victor Schoelcher ? certainly not..don't know where you come from, but you really should open a book sometimes, - those massmedia transformed what is supposed to be Homo Sapiens into 'Homo Credens'.

@@tenorak is your culture anything else than 'filmesque' ? in France in 1960, when this concert took place, Odetta was certainly authorised to sit in the same compartment of the bus as the white people. The United States waited at least 4 years to accept this, and still...Rosa Parks received death threats for years after her revolt. Please don't make false accusations just to appear smart and concerned.

I found her music over 20 years ago, and it has been essential to my growth as a woman; I have leaned on her strength so many times in my life. Paired with the gentleness she also manages to imbue? She is simply magical.

Raphael 'Les' Grinage is magnificent on bass here. Played with Odetta, but also with Bill Evans! Worth reading his Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael_Grinage Manuel, are you a son or grandson? Wonderful to have this performance.
I was in Hattie's Chicken Shack in Saratoga Springs with my family in the '90s when Odetta walked in. I was rooted to my chair as she stood at the counter asking for directions, and then left. But she was back within fifteen minutes and I had the wit to get up and approach her and thank her profoundly for her music.

It's worth a note that the second guitarist here is Peter Childs, I'll be the same Pete Childs who accompanied Fred Neil on "The Dolphins" - ua-cam.com/video/mrg5C9eUhZc/v-deo.html

@@AntoineMaloney Thank you for naming him, Antoine. That's my oldest surviving brother, who was one of Fred Neil's closest friends, and played on all three of his albums. He also played with Judy Collins, can be heard with Peter, Paul, and Mary on dobro in "Pack Up Your Sorrows", and was one of the folk trio "Knob Lick Upper Ten Thousand" in the mid-'60s... a group little-known to the general public (despite two albums from Capitol), but well-known within folk circles.
