I believe the shape of the wax has a lot to do with it's melting temp. The 140 was probably determined on a solid block. A statue's irregular shape will have stress points that with the heat will cause it to deform at lower temperature than a solid block.

You'd think the sculptor, who regularly works with wax, would have considered surface temps, convection and direct sunlight. The limit being 140 is the temperature that it will begin to liquefy. But it will soften and lose integrity before that temp. The sidewalk was probably 140, the dirt at least 100, the air would have been in the 90s, and that wax was sitting in that radiating heat for hours. On top of that, there was humidity. Wtf did they expect?
Losing the point, the statue melting was the desired outcome, it was made to ment and thus convey a message (they expected it more down the line). I personally prefer this artctivism over the people painting Stonehenge.

@@estiiim Could also just be how the sun's rays focused at some point in the day. There have been news stories of cars being damaged in rare cases, where they were parked near a window that reflected and focused the sunlight on it in just the wrong way.
True the message was an afterthought, but it serves as a reminder all the same that global warming is an imminent threat

People act like the artist that works with wax was caught off guard when it started melting in the sun. This was 100% intended by the artist as part of the statement. Not all art is intended to last forever.

Temperature for meteorological reporting is measured under shaded well ventilated areas to measure the temperature of air. Obviously temperature can go much higher under direct sunlight.

You'd think the sculptor, who regularly works with wax, would have considered surface temps, convection and direct sunlight. The limit being 140 is the temperature that it will begin to liquefy. But it will soften and lose integrity before that temp. The sidewalk was probably 140, the dirt at least 100, the air would have been in the 90s, and that wax was sitting in that radiating heat for hours. On top of that, there was humidity.

Losing the point, the statue melting was the desired outcome, it was made to ment and thus convey a message (they expected it more down the line). I personally prefer this artctivism over the people painting Stonehenge.

I'm pretty sure that this is an intentional result. I suppose it could be poor planning, but I think it's more likely to be a performance art aspect to it. Just like how Lincolns influence has waned over time, so is this statue.
