Born: December 4, 1920 in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, British India [now India]
Died: January 11, 1978 (age 57) in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, UK
I grew up in a very conservative Pakistan household but this was religious viewing in our household. Over 40 years later and I still find this absolutely hilarious. I'm not offended by this and whilst the whole cast was flawless Windsor Davies was absolutely phenomenal. RIP Sir. You brought me and my family much joy, laughs and happiness and gave us such wonderful memories for our childhood. I don’t have an issue with the browned up actor Michael Bates and must admit he got it pretty spot on!
Bates was born in Jhansi and spoke Hindi and Urdu before he learned English.
@@ottoacid1800 Excellent, I was trying to find out about his life there. Only sick perverted lunatics of the BBC, considered it Racist. Millions of Indians LOVED IT !! and Michael Bates too.
Bates was born in India 🇮🇳
Very kind words👍👍
💚
Micheal bates..born Jhansi province India..
Spoke hindi and urdu fluent before learning English.
That's why his accents and mannerisms are perfect
I have seen micheal Bates as the Chief Prison Guard in the movie a clockwork orange, as Field marshall montgomery in the movie Patton, and as Cyril Blamire in first two seasons/series of The last of the summer wine. Rest in Peace Mr Michael Bates.
Michael Bates was born in India, could speak various Indian dialects, a fine actor...
but the pc brigade dont understand
He was 1/4 Indian. Served as a major in the army in Burma [2nd WW]. So he could speak most Indian languages.
He also spoke fluent Urdu
@michael fullwood
Michael Bates was quite hot too I think 🥵
Was chief constable barnes no?
It's because Michael bates played this character and not an Indian actor that the pc brigade got on their high horse hence it never being repeated on the TV anymore but he was actually born in India and spoke the language I still love the show
My favourite discussion about it
PC - I hate this show, if they wanted an Indian character they should have used a proper Indian
Me - So would you accept a guy born in India, who learned to speak Urdu before he learnt to speak English?
PC - Yes
Me - Congratulations, you just accepted Michael Bates as he was born in India and learnt Urdu before he could speak English
PC - What????
Happy to say it’s now on its second showing on tv 😊 2023
Theres no denying, Jimmy Perry and David Croft are incredible writers and they did an excellent job with it ain't half hot mum, dad's army, hidey hi, are you being served?etc.
Nobody could compare, despite many other great Comedies . Perry & Croft were KINGS of COMEDY.
I still can't believe this character was played by the same bloke who played the prison officer from A Clockwork Orange! Extreme opposite characters!
Or the RAF Station Warrant Officer in the film The Battle of Britain
A very studious and nuanced performance from a superlative actor. One of the finest of his generation. Unfortunately white actors today would not be allowed to take on a role like this which is sad.
NO--SICK SICK SICK !
He played an indian in an episode of Dick Emery’s shows.
A lot of internet sources quote Michael's death location as Cambridge. I did a bit of checking around and in fact he died in Chelsea and resided in Twickenham at that time.
Michael was great, as Blamire in 'Last Of The Summer Wine' and of course in 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' R.I.P. Michael.
The PC brigade have caused the BBC to stop playing any version of, 'It ain't half hot mum,' that Micheal Bates appears in.
I actually preferred his episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, more than any others. He gave them the better contrast to Bill Owens character.
{BBC = Big Bumbling C...s (or Berks, in cockney rhyming slang.)}
Same way they screwed up with 'Top Gear.' Will they never learn?
@Blind Bob
Its the PC brigade within the BBC!
What an actor. He also played a funny role in A clockwork orange but I didn't recognize him here.
Yeah until I saw him in clockwork Orange I didn't realised he was a real Indian! But apparently he was anglo- Indian. A great actor.
I need to watch more Michael Bates. I know him from Frenzy, and A Clockwork Orange.
He is very funny and good actor. I am liking.
Loved him in this show, was sad to hear he died after the 5th series . R I P X
When is the BBC going to pull their finger out and Repeat the series, it's not racist it's acting
it's mainly due to changing tastes and styles. The jokes are dated and are based on smut and taboos that don't exist - 'they go into the bushes! ... Oooh!' - It is also much slower than modern comedy where jokes appear much quicker - every 30 secs - 1 minute on the best 1s. and the cross dressing thing has been done to death (Mrs Brown etc). watch this then watch classic Seinfeld, 30 Rock, whatever and compare subject matter, attitudes (race, gender, politics) and speed of gags.
It is a bit racist. not so much the blackin up or the accents, but the actual jokes are a bit racist...still really funny though. So they should put it on tv, maybe late in the evening.
@@lovelybitofbugle219 YEAH ? who says so? MILLIONS of People in India, religiously watched the tv series, they LOVED it, especially Michael Bates, who was brought up there and spoke all their dialects. PLus several Indians who had regular parts every week for many years.
The whole series is being shown on that’s tv at the moment , they’re up to series six and I am loving it very very funny,
I one talked to Windsor Davis in London and said my dad loved the show because of BSM Williams but I liked never the Twain, I am definitely a fan of it ain’t half hot mum now , Michael Bates as Ranji is superb and I have the same name and surname as MB
Superb!
As a kid I never realised that Michael Bates' character wasn't Indian!
Fantastic series, really funny and PATHETIC how it's banned
Brilliant.
starred in early episodes of last of the summer wine in which he was brilliant...
My favourite bearer of all.😍
It ain't half snowflakess mum grrrrrrr
Michael Bates was born in Jhansi India spoke the language and the many dialects. No matter his colour he is Indian at the end of the day.
If a Black women can play Ann Boleyn what's the problem.?
John clegg was also born in pakistan. What was to become pakistan. Dont know if he spoke any of the dialects
Fantastic program and funny too. The PC brigade has a lot to answer for. The new comedies on the telly at the moment are PC.........Pathetic Comedy.
thanks Bobby Gooner....i find bates really entertaining..his indian mannerisms are on the dot...i was wondering how he came to do it so well...now i know...he must have spent a lot of time there..
He was born there in 1920. His upbringing was such that he learned Urdu and Hindi before he ever spoke English. The song was taught to him as a baby my his Indian Amah (nanny).
@@tomoconnor3877 similar story with spike milligan
I hope they rerun these just to piss off the PC brigade
Sadly, they haven't got the guts to do that. They are too afraid of offending anyone these days.
But... Is that the sole reason why the P.C. brigade are getting their underwear in a twist?
Because on the surface it is a White man 'blacking up'?
Regardless of the fact he could probably have told them what he thought of them in several Indian languages as he was born there.
Maybe it is the constant use of the term "poof", or it's plural "poofters" by BSM Williams to describe the members of the Concert Party. Because now it's homophobia. Rightly or wrongly it was a common degoratory term then.
The show takes the p***ss out of several British stereotypes: The Colonel & the Captain are Upper Class twits. Williams the ogre Seargent-Major that anyone who did military service will recognise.
In the end BSM Williams realises that out of uniform he's nobody. Gunner Parkin offers him a 'billet'.
Old 'Shut Up' didn't seem to hate Gunner Parkin. Where did it come from that 'Parky' might be the illigitimate child of BSM Williams?
I wondered why Williams had wound up being posted to the Concert Party rather than being with a unit 'up the jungle' or belching fire & brimstone on a drill square at Aldershot.
Oh gawd blimey Charlie 😂
This was hilarious!
He was also known for Last of the Summer Wine.
He was good in Carrington VC as Brooke-Smith.
Yes in fact was the only cast member born in India, the two other regular Asian actors were born in Bangladesh & Pakistan.
which were part of India until 1947, and was separated due the destruction of the colonial powers
Mac Daddy not destruction they ran away.
They stole land, jewels, money, spices and anything else they could take leaving mayhems.
Mac Daddy complete horse shit , pakistan was created to stop muslims killing hindus and sikhs and vice versa
Chika A just look at how well india has done since the only shit hole with millions in poverty and a
£200,000,000 space program that the uk gives £200,000,000 a year to in foraign aid, the only thing the british took from india when they left was dysentri and dele belly
John Clegg who played Paderewski was born in India
This would be considered racist yet the Dolmio family commercials seem to be acceptable!!!
I couldn't agree more!
Thats because they are white its only racist if your black. Bloody PC idiots.
I didn't know that 633 Squadron would be featured in this. Well Michael Bates did mention 'mosquitoes' after all.........LOL!
God I'm gonna sound prehistoric here but this is a piece of classic comedy! Yes, looking back it would be offensive but that's what it was like back in the day! So sad those PC Oxbridge idiots won't repeat it but we have a plethora of comedians who talk about sex and nudity and swear all the time!
Hey, is that Dino Shafique ?
One of my favourite actors..wish his burial location was known so somebody could film his grave
He also played a german general in the tv series "Fall of eagles".
On the BBC you are only allowed to crack jokes about Brexit. Dennis and his lot on Radio 4 6.30pm on Fridays wallowed on that for years. All about how thick we are....not them of course though their knowledge of the subject can be written on the back of a postage stamp.
Now airbrushed out of comedy history.
It is Series 2 episode 6 - Forbidden Fruits. first shown 6/2.1975
Was Michael Bates an Anglo-Indian?My parents used to live in New Delhi(my father was serving in the Malaysian High Commission/Embassy there) and so my mother used to tell about the Anglo-Indians-a Eurasian/Hybrid community in India of mixed European and Indian heritage.
Azam Shahuddin he was born inThe United Provinces of Agra and Oudh.. So pritty Indian

He is singing Jham Jham Pareli.
ah, thanks a bundle mate! I've been looking for the song he's singing for ages now.
Spoke many Indian languages. Especially Urdu
How is Rangi so cute tho?
I love him
Couldn't be done today. The Brigade of Political Correctness armchair warriors would be screaming ," Racist"!!
minden fugleman right on!
Why the guy was born in India and could speak the language.!!
I think we lived as t.v comadey was at it's best because back then we could all laugh at ourselves not now we have to put up with the x factor and other crap on tv year in year out on and on same old
Nowadays , an indian actor would do his part cause theres more indian actors available. but please BBCs lack of ideas department don't redo this, we,d only say "Not as good as Michael Bates", reshow the original.
Ain't half hot mum
What is the song Micheal Bates Rangi singing,I've been looking for it for 40 years, and still no closer to finding it.
I don't think this is the title of the episode, I looked at the it ain't half hot mum dvds and I can't find the episode
He started in the early episodes of "last of the summer wine "
Name of song pls merci!
I think it comes from either service one or two
"Shut up!!!"
Anybody spot the (Future) Policeman from "Allo allo"
???
It's not Arthur Bostrom.
Anyone know the lyrics of the song in English?
I live in dehradun and I still don't know what the actuall song's name is somebody please tell me !!
As a user further down said, it's a song called "Jham Jham Pareli". It's apparently a song of the Gurkhas, which makes sense as Michael Bates was an officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas during World War II.
The song's on UA-cam, and it's a really pretty tune.
@@s.j.bailey6493 thanks man!!!
@@s.j.bailey6493 Aye, listening to it now.... to think Michael Bates was a Gurkha... 😳 I'm in no way British, but I used to work with an indian guy who told me legends of the Gurkha. Intense respect to these warriors!
Not actor he real
